President Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi has shared an important update on his official Facebook page, revealing that he recently held bilateral talks with President Xi Jinping of the People’s Republic of China. The discussions took place on the sidelines of the Summit of the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), marking the continuation of dialogues held in 2021 and 2023.

In his post, President Chakwera emphasized his commitment to ensuring that the conversations around economic production, modernization, industrialization, and infrastructural development translate into rapid and tangible outcomes. The elevation of the bilateral relationship between Malawi and China to a strategic partnership was a key focus, with Chakwera expressing optimism about the future.

“As we approach the 17th anniversary of our diplomatic ties, Malawi looks forward to shared prosperity via the Belt & Road Initiative, an infrastructure program that promises huge economic impact in the Global South, when factored into the African Continental Free Trade Area structure,” Chakwera wrote.

The President outlined specific projects that he proposed to President Xi Jinping as prime candidates for inclusion in the Belt and Road Initiative. These projects include the improvement of the Rumphi-Nyika-Chitipa-Ilomba Road and the rehabilitation and expansion of Malawi’s railway lines. Chakwera highlighted how these infrastructure developments could significantly enhance connectivity between Malawi, Zambia, and Tanzania, boosting regional trade and integration.

In response to Chakwera’s proposals, President Xi Jinping expressed his intention to make the FOCAC summit a landmark event for Malawi, ensuring that the 17th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations heralds a new era of sustainable development.

Chakwera’s update underscores Malawi’s dedication to strengthening its relationship with China and leveraging it for the nation’s economic growth and infrastructural development. The President’s engagement at the FOCAC summit is poised to have far-reaching implications for Malawi’s future, particularly in the context of the Belt and Road Initiative and its integration with broader African economic frameworks.

UTM lacks expertise to investigate plane crash, says commentator

Political and good governance commentator Victor Chipofya has cast doubt on the UTM party’s ability to investigate the recent plane crash that killed Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima’s brother and eight others. Chipofya’s remarks come after UTM expressed dissatisfaction with the preliminary report released by the German Federal Bureau and announced plans to conduct their own investigation.

According to Chipofya, UTM lacks the necessary skills and expertise to investigate the cause of the crash.

“While there are indeed unanswered questions surrounding the report, UTM does not have the capacity to conduct a thorough and credible investigation,” Chipofya said.

Chipofya’s comments have sparked debate, with some arguing that UTM’s move is a mere publicity stunt.

“It’s a desperate attempt to gain political mileage from a tragic incident,” said one observer.

The German Federal Bureau’s report has raised more questions than answers, with many calling for a comprehensive investigation.

However, Chipofya insists that UTM is not equipped to handle such a complex investigation.

“UTM’s stance is mere rhetoric, and they will not be able to uncover anything substantial,” Chipofya added.

The incident has sparked widespread speculation, with many theories emerging about the cause of the crash.

However, Chipofya cautions against speculation, emphasizing the need for a credible and expert-led investigation.

As the nation waits for answers, the UTM party’s plans to investigate have been met with skepticism.

With Chipofya’s comments casting doubt on their ability to do so, it remains to be seen whether UTM will proceed with their investigation.

In a related development, the Malawi Government has announced a full investigation into the crash, with international experts expected to join the probe.

The move has been welcomed by many, who hope that the truth will finally be uncovered.

The incident has also raised questions about aviation safety in Malawi, with many calling for improved measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.

As the debate continues, one thing is clear: the nation demands answers, and only a credible investigation will suffice.

National Water Resources Authority (NWRA) has urged editors and media managers in the country to assist the authority in changing peoples mindsets on issues surrounding water resource management.

The remarks were made by the Chief Executive Officer of NRWA Dr Dwight Kambuku, at Chikho Hotel in Mponela, on Monday, when his organisation engaged editors and media managers from Central and Northern regions.

Dr Dwight Kambuku

“Editors and media managers should help the citizenry to manage water resources and avoid any water-related catastrophe.

“This interaction today recognises the pivotal role that the media has in changing the mindset of the citizenry on water resource management issues,” he said.

He further stated that projections indicate that as a country, Malawi may have the worst water-related catastrophe for encroachers on the buffer zones of Lake Malawi and rivers in the next hydrological years.

“This is where editors and media managers become critical in disseminating warning messages to the populace to save life and property, by involving their reporters,” he said.

He said no individual can spur the country’s socio-economic development without sustainable water resources, hence the need to involve gatekeepers as they have an enormous task towards realization of the Malawi 2063 through publication and broadcasting water-related issues.

“For us to have sustainable water resources, editors and media managers are central by virtual of being gatekeepers of all the information from their media outlets,” he said.

He then expressed hope at the end of the meeting that the authority believes that editors and media managers will send messages to the masses on water resource management that could help to avoid catastrophe scenarios.

In his remarks, Secretary General for Editors Forum Gracian Tukula said editors and media managers are gatekeepers in the newsroom and make decisions saying it is important therefore to get the right knowledge of NWRA so that they can properly guide the reporters on how to come up with good stories.

One of the editors, Gloria Kanyangwa from Mlimi Radio thanked the authority for organizing the interface saying the knowledge that has been imparted to them will help how they can assign reporters to cover issues of water management.

The meeting was convened to share notes on how best the authority can sustainably manage and regulate water resources to avoid any water-related catastrophe among the citizenry.
