Blue Eagles crowned FDH Cup champions after a historic penalty shootout win over FCB Nyasa Big Bullets in Lilongwe

Blue Eagles Football Club have become the first non-Super League side to win the FDH Cup following their 3-2 win over two time champions FCB Nyasa Big Bullets on post-match penalties at Bingu National Stadium (BNS) in Lilongwe.

Lanken Mwale was the hero of the day as he scored the winning penalty while substitute goalkeeper Joshua Waka saved two penalties to help the Area 30 side win the Cup which was launched in 2021.

Bullets started the game very well, dominating possession for the first 20 minutes but Blue Eagles managed to settle in the last 25 minutes.



Blue Eagles got their first chance in the 20th minute through Schumacher Kuwali but his shot from the edge of the penalty box hit the post.

Kuwali had another chance in the 35th minute but this time around his shot was saved  by Bullets goalkeeper Richard Chimbamba.

In the second half, Bullets made a number of substitutions bringing in the fresh legs of Chikumbutso Salima and Maxwell Phodo replacing Ronald Chitiyo and Ephraim Kondowe respectively.

On the other hand, Blue Eagles coach Elia Kananji replaced captain Schumacher Kuwali with Lanken Mwale.

Towards the end of the match Joshua Waka replaced Brighton Munthali who got injured in the 89th minute while Bullets brought in Clyde Senaji for Stanley Biliati.

The match then went into penalties and it was Blue Eagles who got the better of the People’s team after the match had ended goalless in the regulation time.

Eagles scored through Andrew Juvinala, Ganizani James and Lanken Mwale while Mecium Mhone and Jacob Robert had their spot-kicks saved by Bullets goalkeeper Richard Chimbamba.

On the other hand, the People’s team scored through Gomezgani Chirwa and Nixon Nyasulu while Precious Phiri and Babatunde Adepoju had their spot-kicks saved by Eagles goalkeeper Joshua Waka. Clyde Senaji missed his spot kick.

Blue Eagles goalkeeper Brighton Munthali was voted man of the match.

Her address focused on honoring the late Vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima and critiquing the current state of Malawi’s governance.

Kaliati emphasized that the rally was a moment to remember Dr. Chilima, who she described as a visionary leader committed to improving the lives of Malawians. She lamented the persistent poverty in Malawi, noting that despite efforts, the country remains among the poorest in the world. “In 1981, Malawi was among the 100 poorest countries, and in 2024, it is still at position 5 of the 100 poorest countries. What progress has been made?” she questioned, criticizing those who boast of improvements without substantial evidence.
