MHRC finds police detention at roadblock led to infant’s death

The Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has revealed that the death of a seven old weeks baby in Mzimba in June last year was caused by detention at the Mtambalika Roadblock for over 15 minutes.

MHRC investigated the death after the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) lodged a complaint on the matter.

Presenting the investigation findings in Lilongwe on Tuesday, MHRC commissioner Boniface Massa said:“The police stopped the vehicle because the driver was operating the vehicle without a valid road service permit.

“It is established that the police detained the vehicle for about 10 to 25 minutes despite the driver of the vehicle informing the police that he was rushing to the hospital with the child who was not feeling well.”

The baby died upon arrival at the hospital.

The commission has however,advised  the family of the deceased to consider commencing legal action against the police and the taxi driver for the loss of life.

Malawi adopts electronic lab management system

The Ministry of Health says it has adopted an electronic laboratory information management system called Surveillance and Epidemiology or Drug Resistant Infections Information Management System (SEDRLIMS).

Head of Division responsible for Antimicrobial Resistance in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Collins Mitambo says with this system,the country’s health sector is expected to improve.

Says Mtambo:“SEDRLIMS is a critical step towards modernizing our healthcare infrastructure. It will improve the accuracy and efficiency of our medical records and laboratory processes, ultimately enhancing patient care and health outcomes.”

He says the new system is user-friendly, easily connects with several laboratory instruments, and is interlinked with other existing hospital information systems and that it will help the country generate high quality-data on antimicrobial resistance.

According to Mitambo, the system is expected to roll out in phases starting with central hospitals and some of the district hospitals.

Temwani Chilenga asks well-wishers to support her Zoe Foundation Orphanage with water,electricity

Founder of Zoe Foundation Orphanage Temwani Chilenga in Area 25, Lilongwe,has asked well wishers to support the foundation with water and electricity.

Chilenga says the foundation has been operating without water and electricity since 2018.

She was speaking on Tuesday when Old Mutual supported the foundation with K5 million to help alleviate hunger and financial challenges at the facility.

“We appealing to well-wishers to assist us with financial support for water and electricity,” she said.

Zoe Foundation Orphanage hosts 92 orphaned children aged between nine months and 16 years.

The foundation also provides early childhood and primary education for children in the surrounding communities.

Old Mutual donates K5 million to Zoe Foundation

As part of its 70th anniversary celebrations, Old Mutual on Tuesday donated K5 million to a Lilongwe-based orphanage Zoe Foundation which cares for 92 orphaned children.

The foundation,founded by Temwa Chilenga, also provides early childhood and primary education for children in the surrounding communities.

Speaking in an interview with local media after handing over the donation,Managing Director for Old Mutual Life Insurance Company Roy Punungwe said the gesture is a deliberate move to give back to the community as they celebrate 70 years of service.

“We are happy with what Temwa is doing here. She is a young lady who has moved mountains, and her story inspired us to come forward and help the foundation as we celebrate,” he said.

In her remarks, Chilenga commended Old Mutual for the donation, saying that the orphanage will leverage the support rendered to them.

“The foundation relies on farming and small-scale businesses to sustain itself, but these efforts are insufficient. This money will help us cater to some of the needs at the foundation,” she said.

Old Mutual opened its first office in Malawi in 1954, which operated as a mutual life insurance company until 1997 when the Old Mutual Group demutualised.

The company employs over 27 000 people and operate in 13 countries across two regions: Africa (South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, Ghana, Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan and Eswatini) and Asia (China).

Veteran broadcaster Everess Kayanula laid to rest in Mtsiro

The body of Everess Kayanula, a revered veteran broadcaster and former Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) employee, has been laid to rest in her home village of Mtsiro, located in Senior Chief Kayembe in Dowa District. The burial took place amidst an outpouring of respect and affection from the community.

Kayanula, who passed away on July 5, 2024, at the age of 66, was honored with a heartfelt farewell by hundreds of people from various walks of life. The gathering at Mdika School Ground in Mtsiro was a testament to the significant impact she had on those around her.

Kayanula laid to rest


Throughout her career with MBC, spanning from 1983 to 2018, Kayanula made notable contributions to Malawian media. She began her tenure as an Assistant Announcer and rose through the ranks to become the Controller of Programmes by the time of her retirement. Her dedication to broadcasting and her role in shaping MBC’s programming left a lasting legacy.

Kayanula was also celebrated for her role as an advisor and helper to those in need, underscoring her commitment to her community beyond her professional achievements. Her contributions were widely recognized, and her presence will be sorely missed by many.

She is survived by four children and 11 grandchildren, who now carry forward her memory and the values she exemplified throughout her life. Her passing marks the end of an era for many who knew and respected her.

The service in Mtsiro provided an opportunity for family, friends, and colleagues to pay their last respects and reflect on her enduring influence. Everess Kayanula’s life and career serve as a reminder of the profound impact one individual can have on both professional and personal communities.
