Chakwera optimistic about FOCAC summit’s impact on Malawi’s infrastructure development

President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has expressed optimism about the upcoming fourth summit meeting of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), highlighting the initiative’s potential to boost Malawi’s infrastructure development through the Agriculture, Tourism, and Mining (ATM) Strategy.

Speaking at Kamuzu International Airport(KIA) before departing for China on Sunday,Chakwera emphasized China’s commitment to implementing various development projects in Malawi.



He noted that the FOCAC summit will provide a platform for African Heads of State and Government to adopt the 2025-2027 Beijing FOCAC Plan of Action, which will guide China-Africa engagement in various sectors.

Chakwera is expected to join other African leaders on September 4th and 5th, 2024, to consider and adopt the plan.

The Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) has been instrumental in strengthening Africa-China relations since its inception in 2000.

This year’s summit will be held under the theme “Joining Hands to Advance Modernization and Building a High-level China-Africa Community with a Shared Future.”

During the summit, the Malawi leader will hold bilateral talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping to strengthen the cordial bilateral relations between Malawi and China and enhance cooperation in various transport and infrastructure projects.

Kunkuyu assures public of accurate investigation report on Chilima,8 others death

Minister of Information and Digitalisation, Moses Kunkuyu, has assured the public of the accuracy and integrity of the German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation (BFU) interim report, which has been translated into Chichewa.

During a press briefing at the Central Office of Information in Lilongwe on Sunday, Kunkuyu emphasized the need for calm and patience as the public awaits the final investigation report.

Kunkuyu urged media houses to exercise caution and verify facts to ensure accurate dissemination of information, noting that the report is accessible to all Malawians.

He highlighted that the translation into Chichewa aims to reach a broader audience, particularly those facing limitations in accessing information via diverse social media platforms and other outlets.

Regarding the report’s findings, Kunkuyu quoted that the 54-year-old Pilot in Command (PIC) held a commercial pilot license issued by the South African civil aviation authority and a license for military pilots of the Malawi Air Force.

The PIC had a total flying experience of 2,367 hours, with 2,006 hours on type, and had flown 24:40 hours in the last 90 days and 02:40 hours in the last 24 days.

Additionally, Kunkuyu mentioned that the 44-year-old co-pilot held a commercial pilot license issued by the South African civil aviation authority, as stated in the report.

On August 30, 2024, the German investigators released a report of the aircraft accident that killed late Vice President Dr Saulos Chilima and eight others in Chikangawa Forest on June 10,2024.

Chitsulo stresses need for digital trade legal framework in Malawi

Coordinator of Chairpersons in parliament,Joyce Chitsulo,has stressed the need for legislators to establish a legal framework that supports the adoption of digital trade protocols in the country.

Speaking on behalf of Speaker Catherine Gotani Hara at a one-day African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Digital Training Protocol Sensitization Workshop on Saturday, Chitsulo emphasized the importance of enacting laws that support digital trade within Malawi and across Africa.

“It is crucial for us to align with global digital trade practices as most activities are now conducted electronically and digitally,” Chitsulo said.

She also highlighted the role of lawmakers in advocating for increased funding to facilitate digital marketing initiatives and ensure constituencies benefit from these endeavors.

Chitsulo commended the Malawi Communication Regulatory Authority (MACRA) for its efforts to provide internet connectivity in all constituency Community Day Secondary Schools, noting that this initiative will bolster digital trade in the country.

“As members of parliament, we are committed to raising awareness in our constituencies about the significance of digital trade.

“Despite challenges with internet connectivity, the government, through MACRA, is executing projects like the ‘connect to a school’ initiative, which will support digital trade implementation,” she said.

In her opening remarks, Secretary for Trade and Industry Christina Zakeyo hailed the workshop as a significant milestone in ensuring Malawi’s active participation in the AfCFTA framework and maximizing its benefits.

Zakeyo highlighted that adopting the digital trade protocol will provide Malawi with continental agreements, offering a platform to embrace digital trade practices that can unlock new economic opportunities, enhance business competitiveness, and increase citizen engagement in the digital economy.

In a surprise move, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has announced a list of new appointments to various positions within the party.

The appointments, which take immediate effect, have raised eyebrows as they include individuals who contested for positions during the party’s recent convention but lost.

According to a press release signed by the DPP’s National Publicity Secretary and Presidential Spokesperson, the party has appointed Clement Mwale as Presidential Advisor on Political Affairs, Hon George Chaponda as Presidential Advisor on Policy Development, Chimwemwe Chipungu as Presidential Advisor on Organisation, Jean Mathanga as Presidential Advisor on Election Management, Charles Mhango as Presidential Advisor on Legal Affairs, Dayton Mussa as Presidential Advisor on Youth, Aaron Sangala as Presidential Advisor on Operations, and Everton Chimulirenji as Presidential Advisor on Campaign.

What is striking about these appointments is that all the individuals appointed had contested for various positions during the DPP’s convention held in Blantyre on August 18-19 but lost to their fellow contenders through a secret ballot.

Despite their defeat, the party has seen fit to give them a second chance, appointing them to various positions within the party.

The party has congratulated the appointees on their new roles, saying they are well-deserved.

However, some have questioned the criteria used to select the appointees, arguing that it undermines the democratic process within the party.

The appointments have sparked mixed reactions within the party, with some members expressing surprise and disappointment that those who lost during the convention have been given positions.

Others have welcomed the move, saying it is a demonstration of the party’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity.

As the party gears up for the upcoming elections, the appointments are seen as a strategic move to strengthen the party’s machinery.

However, it remains to be seen how the appointees will work together with those who won during the convention to achieve the party’s goals.

The press release has also advised the appointees to support the party with diligence and avoid gossiping or backbiting, a clear indication that the party is aware of the potential for infighting and divisions within the party.
