Chintedza optimistic about FOCAC summit outcomes for Malawi

Malawi’s Ambassador to China, Allan Chintedza, has expressed optimism about the upcoming 4th Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC)  Summit for September 4-6,2024,in Beijing, China.

In an interview with journalists on Sunday, Chintedza highlighted Malawi’s potential benefits from the summit’s outcomes, particularly in agriculture, mining, and tourism, aligning with President Dr.Lazarus Chakwera’s vision for economic diversification and development.

Chintedza emphasized the importance of ensuring Malawi’s interests are considered in the summit’s discussions, as the next three-year program will be shaped by the agreements reached.

He also noted the significance of President Chakwera’s attendance, which will enable Malawi to have a voice in key areas like agriculture modernization, tourism, and mining.

The summit will focus on various areas, including industrialization, energy, trade, talent development, agricultural modernization, and poverty reduction.

President Chakwera is expected to arrive in China on Monday and hold bilateral talks with President Xi Jinping, as well as meet with industry leaders and partners to foster development in Malawi.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nancy Tembo, and Finance Minister Simplex Chithyola Banda will attend the ministerial conference, which will develop the framework for cooperation.

Established in 2000, FOCAC aims to strengthen relations between China and 53 African nations, with the African Union (AU), and is held every six years, while the ministerial conference occurs every three years.

Usi praises bishop Kaulanda’s exceptional leadership

Vice President Dr. Michael Usi has praised Bishop Francis Kaulanda for his exceptional leadership during his tenure as the Bishop of the Lake Malawi Anglican Diocese.

Speaking at a farewell ceremony on Sunday, themed “Finishing the Race,”Usi commended Bishop Kaulanda for his humility, selflessness, and dedication to his faith.

“Bishop Kaulanda has demonstrated true leadership, showing that leadership is not just about power or authority, but about humility and serving others,” he said.

Usi also praised Bishop Kaulanda’s efforts in unifying the Anglican Diocese of Lake Malawi and his legacy of love, compassion, and unity.

The Vice President highlighted Bishop Kaulanda’s transformative leadership in education, particularly the establishment of the Lake Malawi Anglican University (LAMAU), as a testament to his visionary leadership and commitment to enhancing the nation’s educational landscape.

Usi also praised the collaborative efforts between the Anglican Church and the government in various developmental sectors, emphasizing the importance of such partnerships in advancing the nation’s progress and prosperity.

In his remarks,Bishop Kaulanda expressed his gratitude for the Vice President’s presence, acknowledging it as a testament to the strong partnership between the government and the Anglican Church.

“The shared objective of both the Anglican Church and the government is to serve the people of Malawi, highlighting the strong alliance between religious and state institutions in advancing the welfare of Malawians,” said Bishop Kaulanda.

Kaulanda was ordained as Bishop in the Anglican Church in 1986 and has served the church as a Priest and Bishop for 45 years.

He has served in various portfolios of the Anglican Church such as Diocesan Secretary and Diocesan Youth Coordinator, among others.

He has also served as Chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee in the Central Region and worked as a Board Member of Nice Trust and Chairperson of Micro-loan Foundation.

President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has expressed optimism about the upcoming fourth summit meeting of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), highlighting the initiative’s potential to boost Malawi’s infrastructure development through the Agriculture, Tourism, and Mining (ATM) Strategy.

Speaking at Kamuzu International Airport(KIA) before departing for China on Sunday,Chakwera emphasized China’s commitment to implementing various development projects in Malawi.



He noted that the FOCAC summit will provide a platform for African Heads of State and Government to adopt the 2025-2027 Beijing FOCAC Plan of Action, which will guide China-Africa engagement in various sectors.

Chakwera is expected to join other African leaders on September 4th and 5th, 2024, to consider and adopt the plan.

The Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) has been instrumental in strengthening Africa-China relations since its inception in 2000.

This year’s summit will be held under the theme “Joining Hands to Advance Modernization and Building a High-level China-Africa Community with a Shared Future.”

During the summit, the Malawi leader will hold bilateral talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping to strengthen the cordial bilateral relations between Malawi and China and enhance cooperation in various transport and infrastructure projects.

Kunkuyu assures public of accurate investigation report on Chilima,8 others death

Minister of Information and Digitalisation, Moses Kunkuyu, has assured the public of the accuracy and integrity of the German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation (BFU) interim report, which has been translated into Chichewa.

During a press briefing at the Central Office of Information in Lilongwe on Sunday, Kunkuyu emphasized the need for calm and patience as the public awaits the final investigation report.

Kunkuyu urged media houses to exercise caution and verify facts to ensure accurate dissemination of information, noting that the report is accessible to all Malawians.

He highlighted that the translation into Chichewa aims to reach a broader audience, particularly those facing limitations in accessing information via diverse social media platforms and other outlets.

Regarding the report’s findings, Kunkuyu quoted that the 54-year-old Pilot in Command (PIC) held a commercial pilot license issued by the South African civil aviation authority and a license for military pilots of the Malawi Air Force.

The PIC had a total flying experience of 2,367 hours, with 2,006 hours on type, and had flown 24:40 hours in the last 90 days and 02:40 hours in the last 24 days.

Additionally, Kunkuyu mentioned that the 44-year-old co-pilot held a commercial pilot license issued by the South African civil aviation authority, as stated in the report.

On August 30, 2024, the German investigators released a report of the aircraft accident that killed late Vice President Dr Saulos Chilima and eight others in Chikangawa Forest on June 10,2024.
