By Rahim Abdul

United Democratic Front (UDF) president Atupele Muluzi has moved to clarify his recent public statements, stressing that his calls for leadership and reform should not be interpreted as personal attacks on Head of State Arthur Peter Mutharika.

In a statement released on Monday, Muluzi said he has noted with concern what he described as “continued claims” suggesting that his remarks on governance and national direction are aimed at undermining Mutharika. He dismissed the assertions, emphasizing that his comments are rooted in his role as an opposition leader.

“APM is our President, elected with a strong mandate to deliver for the people of Malawi. I hold him in high regard and look to him as a father figure,” said Muluzi.

Atupele and Mutharika

The UDF leader further revealed that his last meeting with Mutharika was in March 2025, when he paid a courtesy call at the former president’s residence in Mangochi. According to Muluzi, the meeting was cordial, with discussions centered on the country’s future, adding that his respect for Mutharika “remains unchanged.”

However, Muluzi was quick to underline that his position as head of an opposition party in a democratic Malawi compels him to speak out on national issues and hold those in power accountable.

“It is both my duty and responsibility to speak on issues affecting our nation and to hold government to account where necessary. This is not personal,it is the essence of democracy,” he said.

Muluzi’s remarks come amid growing political debate over governance and reform, with various stakeholders weighing in on the direction of the country. His statement appears aimed at striking a balance between maintaining respect for senior political figures and asserting the critical role of opposition voices.

He concluded by reiterating that his focus remains on contributing to the development of Malawi, stressing his commitment to working towards a better future for all citizens.

The clarification is expected to ease tensions among supporters and reinforce the importance of constructive political dialogue as the country continues to navigate its democratic path.

Revolutionary and Realistic leader of Muvi wa Chilungamo Revolutionary Party (MRP) Bantu Saunders Jumah, says Malawi will never be the same from 2030 urging the leaders of today, to stand up and speak and refuse to be silenced.

Jumah has questioned Malawians that for how long shall they continue suffering in silence urging them to join the Revolutionary Movement to change the country – the journey to rebuild this country has started.

He said William Kanyama Chiume, Harry
Bwanausi, Henry Masauko Chipembere, Orton Chirwa, Atati Mphakati, Yatuta Chisiza, and others, sat down for the independence of Malawi saying in 1960, some Malawians lost hope that colonialism was the order of life.

Bantu Saunders Jumah- the journey to rebuild the country has started with the Revolutionary Movement.

The Revolutionary leader said many people in Malawi have lost hope that Malawi will not be a better country with issues of corruption, looting and plunder of public resources taking centre stages saying he doesn’t believe that Malawi cannot change to the better.

Speaking through his Revolutionary voice, Jumah has questioned Malawians why their country led by Professors and Doctors is failing to develop but countries such as Mozambique, Namibia, and Rwanda without leaders of titles , are developing?

Jumah said to be a president of the country does not need any title saying this only need a functioning brain and patriotic heart to govern the people.

He said likewise, to be a Professor or Doctor, is not a qualification for one to be a good leader and possessing many academic degrees is not a yardstick to measure one of becoming a good leader.

The Revolutionary leader said Malawi with leaders holding titles of Professors and Doctors is failing to use education to plead with the South African government to stop hunting for Malawians living in that country without valid documents.

He said the late Zimbabwean President Robert Gabriel Mugabe, a man who did not possess any title on the land, managed to struck a deal with the South African government that 3000 Zimbabweans living in the rainbow nation be granted work permits but Malawians are running away from police to this day.

Jumah has called for the country to have an Indaba to discuss the country’s future saying the problems Malawi is facing need a national consensus for solutions observing that Malawians are suffering while politicians in government are the ones that are enjoying the fruits of government.

” We should have a national Indaba for all of the country’s stakeholders to sit together on a round table discussions for solutions,” said Jumah.

He said fuel, forex issues are a national problem for all to provide solutions calling upon all former presidents, government, opposition, the church and Malawians at large, to stand up as one in providing solutions to the country’s problems.

Jumah has finally urged Malawians regardless of their political party affiliations, to join and support the Revolutionary Movement for change, change cannot come with one person or party but all must be part of the change.

A citizen representative in Ntchisi Gracium Stambuli, says Ntchisi district has had no better roads infrastructure since 1964 observing that if the people had seen a tarmac road for the first time was during the reign of the late Professor Bingu wa Mutharika and his Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) between 2009 to 2013 from Mponela to connect the old 10 Kilometer road from Kalema LEA School to Buzi LEA School in the district..

Stambuli said six governments and six presidents have ruled the country, saying these governments do come and go, Ntchisi has remained the same, poor with no better roads as in 1964 under the colonial government.

Stambuli-We don’t have a better road here, the people of Ntchisi have been abandoned.

He said it was no wonder that the late Ngwazi Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda used to describe the people of Ntchisi as ‘Visanza’ saying Kamuzu gone to the eternal peace without developing the Visanza district.

Speaking to journalists in a mass media campaign tour organized by the Malawi Human Rights Resource Center (MHRRC), Stambuli accused governments of depriving the people of Ntchisi to access the rightful development projects one being better road networks.

He said the DPP led government of President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika constructed the road from Mponela to Ntchisi and a 5 Kilometer road from Malomo and this did not reach Ntchisi, it was booted out of government in 2019, the road construction project was abandoned.

The citizen said the election of President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera brought renewed hope and trust that he being coming from the central region, the abandoned 67 Kilometer road stretch from Malomo – Ntchisi – Dzaleka will commence but this too, was abandoned, rainfall season was attributed as a contributing factor.

Stambuli urged government that since the rainy season is over, it has to come and  restart the road construction project saying this road is a short – cut going to Dowa, Salima and Lilongwe as compared to the current road via Mponela which is very expensive.

” There’s very high poverty level in the district due to no better roads, Ntchisi is a food basket district, we have irish potatoes, tomatoes, onions, all these are lacking better road infrastructures,” he said.

The citizen said the road construction project was hampered by high political interference by Richard Chimwendo Banda and Sam Dalitso Kawale who wanted the contractor to start constructing the road from Dzaleka to Ntchisi saying this too, contributed to the abandonment of the M7 road project.

MHRRCs Capacity Building Development Associate Noel Msiska, said the media tour was supported to bridge the gap between community – level realities and policy implementation by providing evidence – based documentation such as through photojournalism, interviews with Community leaders and testimonies on service delivery gaps including projects identified by the communities.

Msiska said the media tour will help journalists to influence local decision – makers raise awareness and mobilize community support by highlighting specific needs through various media outlets.

” The media tour anticipates turning the community concerns into public issues, creating urgency and providing evidence to support advocacy efforts which can be a key component in a broader campaign to improve services at national and district budget allocations,” he said.

The MHRRC is implementing ” Enhancing Citizen Participation in Local Governance and Development Processes   project in Dowa, Ntchisi and Nsanje districts aimed at combating extreme inequality and promoting an inclusive society where all individuals can live healthy, dignified lives and claim their rights.

The MHRRC supported the media tour with funds from NCA DCA under the Joint Country Programme – Malawi.

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets head coach Gilbert Chirwa has struck an optimistic tone about his squad, insisting he has assembled a youthful side capable of making a strong impact in the 2026/27 season.

The coach made the remarks following a pulsating 2-2 draw against Civil Service United in their opening match of the FDH Bank Premiership, played at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe.

It was a match filled with energy and attacking intent, as both sides signaled their ambitions early in the new campaign, leaving fans entertained but with plenty to dissect.

Chirwa

For Bullets, the goals came through rising talents Clever Kalambo and George Chaomba, who each found the back of the net to keep their side in contention.

However, Civil Service United proved equally resilient with John Dambuleni and Khumbo Mhone scoring to deny the visitors a winning start.

Despite the encouraging attacking display, Chirwa admitted that his side lacked cohesion on the pitch, something he believes cost them maximum points.

He pointed out that while the talent is evident, the team is still in a building phase where understanding and chemistry must improve.

“The boys showed great potential but we need to work on coordination and unity during matches,” Chirwa observed, reflecting on the performance.

The Bullets mentor, however, remains confident that the youthful core of his squad will mature into a formidable force as the season progresses.

He reserved special praise for emerging players such as Pilirani Mapira, Kalambo and Misheck Billiat, describing them as key to the club’s future.

Chirwa emphasized that giving these young players consistent opportunities will be crucial in unlocking their full potential within the Bullets setup.

As the season unfolds, Bullets supporters will be watching closely, hopeful that this blend of youth and ambition will soon translate into victories and a serious title challenge.
