A 34-year-old Steve Manda is in police custody in Nkhotakota district for impersonating a Malawi Defence Force (MDF) officer.
According to Deputy public relations officer for Nkhotakota police, Chisomo Chuma, the suspect on Thursday night was demanding money and beer from people around the Nkhotakota trading centre on the pretext that he had the power to do so.
Chuma says some people got suspicious of his acts, which prompted them to tip off police officers about the strange suspect.
Steve Manda arrested
He says following the receipt of the information, the police arrested Steve and took him to the police station for questioning.
“At the police station, Steve voluntarily admitted having victimised people and that he is not an MDF officer, leading to his arrest,” says Chuma.
He says, the suspect will be taken to court soon to answer the charge of impersonating a public officer.
Steve Manda hails from Muwanga Village, in the area of Traditional Authority(T/A) Mwamlowe in Rumphi district.
In a proactive effort to fortify its financial position, the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP) Blantyre Synod has launched a special appeal strategy to its congregations to raise funds dedicated to ensuring economic stability of the church.
Synod Moderator, Rev. Dr. Humphreys Zgambo presided over the launch on Sunday at St Michaels and All Angels Church in Blantyre with the call to all its faithfuls to actively participate in the fundraising campaign, contributing to the mission of CCAP Blantyre Synod.
Speaking to reporters after the launch, General Secretary for CCAP Blantyre Synod Rev. Anderson Juma, said the synod has a debt of K2 billion obtained from commercial banks, lending institutions and individuals for some of its developmental activities.
Rev. Juma said the newly launched strategy was meant to address the current situation.
He assured members that a minimum contribution of K10,000 by each church member across the Blantyre Synod per year will be utilised for the intended purpose and emphasised on the importance of transparency and accountability in the strategy backed by systematic auditing.
“As the church embarks on this financial journey, we extend a heartfelt plea to all Christians to actively participate in cushioning the current situation, through unity and shared responsibility the Synod envisions a future where its financial endeavors thrive for the greater good,” said Juma.
Chairperson for the Special Appeal Strategy Team, Rev. Reynolds Mmangisa expressed desire to see the church cease dependence on pledges and instead focus on sustainable ways and means of generating income.
“The goal is to reduce reliance on member pledges and ensure sustainable funding for the Church’s operations. As part of this initiative, Christians are encouraged to contribute to the Synod special appeal and ensure sustainable funding for the Church’s operations,” said Mmangisa.
Notable landmarks, Zomba Plateau Lodge, Namingazi Conference Centre, cement making blocks, Namingazi Bottled Water, and Grace Bandawe Conference Centre, all require funds for renovation to meet high standards,” he said.
Session Clerk at Michiru CCAP, Lexa Chiipa commended the Synod for the timely strategy, saying this will help to solve some of the Synods financial challenges.
The Ministry of Homeland Security has recently made and continues to make progress towards achieving maximum security for all Malawians.
Among other achievements, Malawi Police Service has tremendously improved on night patrols which has reduced the crime rate that happens at odd hours of the day.
If this is not enough, the Malawi Police Service managed to reduce accidents during the 2024 new year holiday to 9 from 20 in 2023 over the same period. There is also a great improvement on investigation over various suspected crimes in the country and prosecution of suspended criminals.
Minister Ken Zikhale Ng’oma has been applauded for his great works at Homeland Ministry
With Ken Zikhale Ng’oma as Minister, the Ministry stood tall in making sure refugees were moved from various localities in the country to the refugee camp where they are legally prepared to stay as one way of ensuring national security.
The country has also seen the transfer of female convicts to separate prisons with male counterparts for their well-being as part of respecting human rights and improving security.
In an interview, early this year, National Deputy Police Spokesperson, Alfred Chimthere said as Malawi Police, they are happy with the progress and strides so far made.
“We are happy as Police to see that initiatives that we have put in place like enforcement of laws, visibility of our officers, and tasks of our Traffic Police department are yielding fruits of success. We are hopeful that in 2024 we will even do better than ever” Said Chimthere.
On his part in a recent interview, Minister responsible for Homeland Security, Ken Zikhale Ng’oma said he is happy to see how his Ministry is performing, adding that he is optimistic that Malawians have a greater trust in the Malawi Police Service than before.
“I am happy to see how the Malawi Police Service is performing, but we are not yet there. I know we still have a lot to do to continue providing maximum security for the citizens. My plea is that citizens have to closely work with Malawi Police and give tips whenever there are suspected crimes within their communities.
I thank President Lazarus Chakwera for always giving guidance and the needed support for the Malawi Police Service to deliver on the citizens’ security well-being, that has even seen my Ministry imparting vocational skills to inmates as one way of preparing them for their life after serving jail terms” Zikhale Ng’oma.
Recently, an assessment made by one renown broadcaster, Times TV through its Hot Current Programme that was aired on Sunday 21st January 2024 has rated Ken Zikhale Ng’oma at 70 percent, a clear indications that Chakwera administration has considered national security greatly for meaningful development of Malawi.
The Lilongwe District Council has expressed concern over the increasing number of refugees and asylum seekers who have returned to their localities, despite having been relocated to the Dzaleka refugee camp earlier this year.
In an effort to address this issue, the council is urging all affected individuals to comply with the relocation order and return to the camp without delay.
The decision to relocate the refugees was made by the Ministry of Homeland Security, and the council is determined to ensure its enforcement.
Relocation Background and Importance
The relocation exercise, which commenced in May 2023, aimed to address various issues related to the presence of refugees and asylum seekers in local communities.
The Ministry of Homeland Security had identified the need for centralized facilities in order to provide adequate resources, assistance, and security for those seeking refuge.
This decision was reached at after careful consideration and consultation with relevant stakeholders.
Sensitisation Efforts and Voluntary Return
To effectively communicate the importance of the relocation order, the Lilongwe District Council will be collaborating with chiefs, councilors, local leaders, and the police force to conduct sensitization campaigns.
These initiatives will utilize the public address system and other platforms to encourage refugees and asylum seekers to voluntarily return to the Dzaleka camp.
Through these efforts, the council hopes to avoid confrontations with law enforcement agencies and ensure a peaceful transition.
Repercussions and Reporting
Refugees and asylum seekers who fail to comply with the relocation order may face repercussions, as stated in the previous public notice issued by the Ministry of Homeland Security.
The council emphasizes the importance of reporting any individuals who have returned or are suspected of returning to their localities.
Chiefs and block leaders are urged to collaborate with the police or district commissioner’s office to provide accurate information on the whereabouts of these individuals.
Conclusion
The Lilongwe District Council is committed to the successful implementation of the relocation exercise and ensuring the safety and well-being of refugees and asylum seekers.
By reminding affected individuals of the relocation order and conducting sensitization campaigns, the council hopes to achieve a voluntary return to the Dzaleka refugee camp.
The support and cooperation of local leaders, communities, and the refugees themselves are crucial in ensuring a smooth transition and realizing the long-term benefits of centralized facilities and assistance.
Established by UNHCR in 1994, Dzaleka is the largest refugee camp in Malawi, hosting over 43,000 refugees and asylum seekers.
The majority of them are from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), while others are from Burundi, Rwanda, Somalia, and Ethiopia.
