Police have arrested Chancy Chirwa, a 23-year-old sales lady at Simama General Dealers in Ntchisi.
The arrest follows complaints from a business person, Chikumbutso Kapanda, who alleged to have ordered one bale of sugar at MK57,500 instead of the recommended price of MK37,500.

Investigations indicated that Chirwa had been independently overcharging customers, resulting in significant financial losses, estimated at K2 million, for Kapanda.
Chirwa will soon face theft charges in court in connection with the alleged overpricing scheme.
The incident caused a demonstration by other business people led by councilor Mark Mphezi Mtengo, expressing worries over puffed up commodity prices at the shop.

Recently, the Mchinji district Health office reported seven cases of Viral Conjunctivitis, alarming health authorities. Dr. Yohane Mwale, the Director of Health and Social Services for Mchinji, revealed that five cases originated from Mchinji police station involving suspects, while the other two cases were registered in Traditional Authorities Nyoka and Mduwa respectively.
In response to the outbreak, Dr. Mwale has urged residents in the border district to practice good hygiene, including regular handwashing, avoiding close contact, and seeking medical attention promptly when they develop signs and symptoms of acute viral conjunctivitis.
Parliamentarian for Nkhotakota North Constituency, Henry Chimunthu Banda, on Saturday took humanitarian support from Germans, through the Malawi-Hilfe Schwindegg organization, to assist flood survivors at Chauma Island and Kachere Beach in the area of Senior Chief Kanyenda in the district.
Speaking at Chauma Primary School on the Island, Chimunthu Banda assured people that he will continue supporting them with necessary aid.
He said government will pump in more support and address other challenges that people are facing in the areas.

He said President Dr Lazarus Chakwera is aware of most of the challenges faced and is hopeful they will be addressed.
Chimunthu Banda, who spent over an hour on Lake Malawi to reach out to the affected people said, hundreds of people were affected but some are still in disaster-prone areas which prompted him to carry out the distribution exercise.
“After realising that some flood survivors are still on the island, I started contacting well-wishers and various organisations to source food and non-food items to assist them,” said Banda.
County Director and Project Manager for Malawi-Hilfe Schwindegg, Deosi Kumcheza, assured the flood survivors in the area of the organisation’s commitment to ensure that all people affected by the recent flash floods receive the required assistance from the organisation, government and other partners.
Village Headman Semion Kanyenda, described the support as timely, calling on well-wishers as well as the government to pump in more support for the survivors.
With support from people from Germany through Malawi-Hilf Schwindegg, Chimunthu Banda distributed food and non-food items including maize flour, soya pieces, salt, soap, cooking oil, and peanut butter to the flood survivors.

A dark cloud has engulfed Malawi’s media fraternity following the death of a veteran journalist Charles Mkula.
Mkula,57,saccumbed to kidney failure on Sunday March 10,2024 at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) in Blantyre.
According to his brother, Joseph Mkula, the late Charles Mkula will be buried on Tuesday March 12,2024 at Chipande Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Malemia in Zomba.

He worked for various media organisations including the defunct The Enquirer Newspaper and at the time of his death, he was the secretary general for Journalists Union of Malawi (JUMA).
Mkula was also a correspondent for various international online news organisations.
