A Missed Opportunity: Dr. Michael Usi’s Desperate Attempt to Please Chakwera

By Collings Linyenga

Malawi’s Vice President Dr. Michael Usi, has recently urged Malawians to support President Lazarus Chakwera, praising him as a development-oriented leader. However, this move is widely seen as a desperate attempt to maintain his position as running mate, rather than a genuine effort to promote Chakwera’s agenda.

Usi’s appointment as Vice President after Dr. Saulos Chilima’s passing could have been a catalyst for him to establish himself as a strong political leader, building add adding sense to his movement *”Okudya zake alibe mulandu”*. Instead, he has chosen to tie his political future to Chakwera’s, neglecting to build his own political capital.

Usi

This decision is a missed opportunity for Usi to demonstrate his worth and create a loyal following. His sentiments lack strategic foresight, failing to enhance his popularity or create a lasting political legacy. If he cannot prove his value, Chakwera may be forced to replace him.

Usi needs to build his relevance and create a strong political base, rather than relying on Chakwera’s influence. By blindly supporting the President, Usi jeopardizes his own political future. To become a formidable force in Malawian politics, he must focus on building his own brand and creating a loyal following. Only then can he establish himself as a strong political leader.

The High Court of Malawi in Blantyre on Thursday increased the sentence of a man convicted of defiling his five-year-old biological daughter from 21 years to 40 years with hard labour.

Justice Chiwemwe Kamowa deemed the initial sentence from a lower court as insufficiently stringent and deterrent.

He expressed grave concern regarding the nature of the crime, highlighting the betrayal of trust and psychological trauma inflicted upon the victim.

“A father is expected to be a guardian, a protector, and a source of safety for his child. The actions of the convict have shattered this trust, leaving his daughter psychologically traumatized. This court must send a strong message to would-be offenders. Such offences will not be tolerated,” Kamowa admonished.

Senior State Advocate Abdul Limbe from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had earlier argued for a harsher punishment.

The convict was represented by the Legal Aid Bureau(LAB) .
