The Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court in Balaka has convicted and sentenced a 43-year-old man, Jonas Buleya, to 18 years imprisonment with hard labour after he pleaded guilty to a charge of having sexual intercourse with a child contrary to Section 138 of the Penal Code.

The court through state prosecutor Superintendent Bodwin Msukwa heard that the convict, Jonas Buleya, committed the offence on May 14, 2024 at Nkaluluka Village in Balaka District, where he had unlawful sexual intercourse with a 14-year-old girl.

The court further heard that the convict committed the offence when the girl’s mother was out for other errands and he took advantage of the situation and went into the girl’s house where he had unlawful sexual intercourse with her. The convict noted that the girl’s mother was away.

The convict later threaten the girl not to reveal the ordeal to anyone and if she dared to report, she would be killed but the girl reported the matter to her sister as well as to her mother on the following day.

Appearing before court, the convict pleaded not guilty to a charge of having sexual intercourse with a child. This prompted the state to parade five witnesses who proved the case beyond reasonable doubt and he was later convicted accordingly.

In mitigation, the convict asked the court for leniency, saying he has family obligations and that he also looks after orphans.

However, in his submission, state prosecutor Superintendent Bodwin Msukwa pleaded with the court for a stiff punishment, citing that the offence committed is serious in nature and that the planned to commit the offence as he was supervising the movement of the victim’s parents and relations.

Presiding over the case, Senior Resident Magistrate Joshua Nkhono quashed the mitigation factors and sentenced the convict to 18 years imprisonment with hard labour as a detterent to other would-be offenders.

The convict, Jonas Buleya, comes from
Nkaluluka Village in Traditional Authority Nsamala in Balaka District.

By Durrell Namasank

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Secretary General Dr. Clement Mwale has quashed social  media rumours with action as he has submitted his nomination papers in his bid to return the position of Secretary General at the forthcoming elective convention of the former ruling party.

Earlier On rumours started on Social Media that Mwale was ready to dump the party over what was called favouritism for Peter Mukhito, who is also vying for the same position. It was rumoured that the party hierarchy wanted Mukhito for the role and that they wanted Mwale to go back to his Deputy Secretary General role

Dr. Mwale, who is one of the senior members of the DPP, has refuted rumours making rounds on social media that he has ditched the former ruling party, saying he remains a loyal member of the DPP.

He has added that ditching the former ruling party has never come to his mind.

DPP is expected to hold its elective convention between 17th and 18th August in Blantyre where over 100 people are expected to compete on various positions.

DPP Commended for Equal Distribution of Positions at Elective Convention, Sets Example for Inclusivity and Diversity

By Twink Jones Gadama

The 2018 elective convention for the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) passed a resolution that aims to ensure the party truly represents all regions of the country.

In a move towards inclusive governance and diversity, the central executive committee adopted an equal distribution of positions among regions in the National governing council.

This decision reflects the party’s commitment to being a truly national party, representing and serving the interests of all Malawians.

The resolution passed at the 2018 convention set the foundation for a more inclusive political landscape within the DPP.

The party’s dedication to equal representation among regions is crucial in promoting diversity and inclusivity, allowing for a stronger representation of the various regions and their unique perspectives.

This move is significant as it ensures that all regions have a voice within the party and are given equal opportunities to participate in decision-making processes.

Aspirants for positions within the DPP are advised that positions will be competed for solely by candidates who are permanent residents of the respective regions.

This ensures that individuals from all regions have the opportunity to participate in leadership roles within the party.

The press release for this communication was signed by DPP’s publicity secretary and presidential spokesperson, Hon. Shadrick Namalomba.

In contrast, the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) recently held its elective convention with 19 most senior positions held by individuals from the central region, where the MCP is regarded as its stronghold.

This has raised concerns about the party’s inclusivity and representation of all regions within the country.

The northern region has only one senior position within the MCP, while the southern and eastern regions have been marginalized in terms of senior positions.

Critics have described the MCP as a club of “homeboy” members with no regard for other regions in the country.

This lack of inclusivity has led to calls for the party to address its regional bias and ensure that all regions are adequately represented within its leadership structures.

Many believe that a party that does not truly represent all regions of the country should not be given the mandate to rule.

The DPP’s commitment to equal distribution of positions has not gone unnoticed, with many commending the party for setting an example of inclusive governance.

The move towards equal representation among regions within the party is a step in the right direction towards building a more inclusive political landscape in Malawi.

The DPP’s resolution to ensure equal distribution of positions among regions is a commendable effort towards promoting diversity and inclusivity within the party.

This decision reflects the party’s commitment to being a truly national party, representing and serving the interests of all Malawians.

As other political parties in the country look to the DPP as an example, it is essential for all parties to prioritize inclusivity and representation of all regions in governance.

President and Commander in Chief of Muvi wa Chilungamo Revolutionary Party (MRP) Bantu Saunders Jumah, says Malawi politics has a problem of bandaging problems saying the country needs civilization and civic education.

Jumah has observed that when citizens are not civic educated, they end up choosing bad leaders and government to govern them noting with a great concern that 6 governments and leaders have gone, the country is still poor as it was in 1964.

Bantu Saunders Jumah

He said political parties have a mandate to civic educate their supporters and citizens for them to be enlightened and understand what politics is so that they should not be repeating choosing bad leaders and government to govern them.

Speaking through a Revolutionary voice in various media platforms, Jumah said Malawi has gone down because of electing bad leaders who bandage problems claiming that the country has only 500 megawatts of electricity to the entire 20 million plus citizens.

Jumah said out of K100, K90 goes for consumption through allowances, corruption, and salaries while K10 is for development saying this has made the country collapse and it is not a surprise that living standards of the citizens, is down.

He said President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera must show that he is unbandaging the wounds if he is to live a legacy of being a good leader warning Malawians that if they keep on voting for leaders bandaging problems, the country should forget about any development.

The MRP President said Malawi has over 500 species of fish on Lake Malawi, 6 governments and 6 political parties have gone with no factory for processing tinned fish, that is bandaging the problem, seating on Public Sector Reforms, and 84 corruption suspects as named in the ACB Report, are still be hidden, bandaging the problem.

“Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika promised to prosecute Cashgate suspects, bandaging problems, President Chakwera promised to trim presidential powers, bandaging the problem,” said Jumah.

He has reminded Malawians that President Chakwera promised to end corruption but the MCP is the most corrupted government the country has ever had, saying K15 trillion has been borrowed and spent in just 4 years of its rule.

Jumah has advised President Chakwera to unbandage the wounds in his government by instituting lifestyle forensic audit by allowing the ACB and police to investigate K4 billion spent for MCP Elective Convention, arresting and prosecuting Dr. Kenneth Zikhale Ng’oma, Simplex Chithyola Banda and Engineer Vitumbiko Mumba for being found and defending dishing out money to the electorate.

He said even President Chakwera admitted that these three have broken the laws wondering how come two Ministers could dish out K76.5 million to voters in one day and one Minister found with K351 million to the voters of southern region.
