Jappie Mhango appointed as Northern Region DPP Vice President

Former ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has on Tuesday October 17, 2023 announced the appointment of Jappie Mhango as the party’s vice president for the northern region.

In a statement the party’s spokesperson Shadric Namalomba said Mhango’s appointment follows a meeting by the Central Executive Committee (CEC) on Monday October 16,2023 which was chaired by the party’s president Peter Mutharika.

“On behalf of His Excellency, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, the President of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), I have the pleasure to announce the appointment of Hon Jappie Ntuwa Mhango as the DPP Vice President for the Northern Region with immediate effect.

“The Central Executive Committee of the Party, chaired by the President met yesterday to approve this appointment in accordance with Article 9 (5a) of the DPP Constitution,” said Namalomba in a statement.

He added that, he believes Mhango will among others help in uniting members of the party following the intra-party fights that have been happening in the party.

The position fell vacant following the death of Goodall Gondwe on August 8 this year.

EGENCO employee Daniel Tembo collapses to death

One of the top officials at Electricity Generation Company (EGENCO) Daniel Tembo has collapsed to death while on his way to work.

An eye witness has confirmed the development in a statement made available to this 247 Malawi News.

“Dan Tembo of EGENCO, just collapsed on his way to Nkula this morning, He was driving and felt very hot, stopped his car, He immediately fell down and the Bt water board guys who were driving behind him stopped and picked him to Nkula clinic.

“He stabilized and Egenco decided to take him to Mwayiwathu and sadly he passed on the way and declared dead on arrival,” reads part of the statement.

Meanwhile,EGENCO is yet to comment on the matter.

Govt announces 1.5 million farmers to benefit from AIP

The Government through the Ministry of Agriculture has announced that 1.5 million farmers will benefit from the Affordable Input Programme (AIP) in the upcoming farming season.

Briefing Journalists in Lilongwe on Tuesday, Minister of Agriculture Sam Kawale said President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera will launch the Programme on October 20, Kaluluma EPA in Kasungu.

The Minister disclosed that the government has maintained K15 000 as an amount which farmers will be paying to redeem a 50 kilogramme bag of fertiliser.

He further assured farmers in the country of the availability of fertiliser saying Treasury has already released some funds for its purchase and transportation.

Kawale also said that the Smallholder Farmers Fertiliser Revolving Fund of Malawi has readily available fertiliser.

He disclosed that currently, the government already distributed fertiliser to Dedza, Kasungu, Dowa, Nkhotakota, Mzimba, Rumphi
Chitipa, Mangochi and Neno among other districts.

Last growing season AIP faced network and transportation hiccups which forced some members of Parliament to be using personal resources to transport the farm inputs.

Malawi’s AIPcurrently combines an economic and a social objective, respectively aimed at increasing agricultural production; and assisting poor farming households.

I am eyeing prizes – Chakwera declares ahead of presidential charity golf tourney

President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has sent shivers down the spine of Presidential Charity Golf Tournament competitors saying he has worked so hard to improve his game and that unlike last year, he is in good shape to compete for honours.

To show his seriousness, on Sunday 15th October 2023, President Chakwera took to Mlambe Golf Course in Mangochi to prepare for the event slated for Lilongwe Golf Club on Saturday.

“Last year I had a good time on the golf course but this year it’s not just about participating, I am eyeing the prizes,” said Chakwera in a statement issued by State House Press Office.



“I have worked hard on my short game and putting. Let those taking part know that there is a new golfer in town and I will give them a good run for their money.”

Presidential Charity Golf Tournament is Chakwera’s own initiative that is aimed at raising funds for needy students from public universities and Tropical Cyclone Freddy victims.

Lilongwe City Mayor Richard Banda meets party and block leaders ahead of 2025 polls

As 2025 general elections draw closer, Mayor of Lilongwe City , Councilor Richard Banda on Monday met Malawi Congress Party (MCP) officials and block leaders at Tsabango Primary School in Lilongwe City to seek their support.

Speaking at the meeting, Banda announced that he will stand as member of parliament for the newly demarcated Lilongwe Mlodza constituency.

He explained that he has decided to stand as MP to partake in the development of the area.

He said the constituency lags behind in terms of development such as clean water, passable roads, electricity, decent schools and bridges.

He said it is sad that despite constituencies receiving K100 million Constituency development Fund (CDF), people are still struggling to access quality services.

“As I speak check the bridges if you are at Chipasula and you want to go to area 22, you will have to drive via Petroda Filling station. And really just because of a bridge we need this to change, ” he said.

Banda urged the sitting MPs not to block their councilors to stand.

The councilors too have a bound duties to contribute to the growth of our economy and Malawi agenda 2063.

During the meeting Banda announced that the door is now open to discuss development projects till 2025.

“I will not wait for 2025 to start developments I will start now chonde mafumu ndilipo mwana wanu tiyeni tiyendere limodzi,” he said.
