Saunders Jumah says Malawi’s democracy under Siege

President and Commander-in-Chief of the Muvi wa Chilungamo Revolutionary Party (MRP), Bantu Saunders Jumah, has stated that Malawi’s democracy is under siege.

Jumah believes that a country that relaxes when its fundamental principles of freedom are being abused or violated is prone to destruction or collapse.

He has described Malawi’s democracy as being held hostage, citing that for the first time since 1994, democracy in the country has been abused.

He says free speech, freedom of the press, and democratic principles have all been compromised.

According to the MRP President, government officials, including the President and his Ministers, fail to tell the truth while in office, only to speak out against the government once they are out of power.

Jumah is referencing Martha Chizuma, the former ACB Director General , who only spoke out about the government’s lack of will to fight corruption after her contract expired.

He also mentions Kenneth Msonda, who changed his stance on the government after being expelled from the DPP, and Timothy Pagonachi Mtambo, who only began speaking the truth about the government after being fired from cabinet.

He says he believes that Malawi needs people to tell the truth while in government, not just when they are out of power.

Regarding the firing of Immigration Chief Retired Brigadier General Charles Kalumo, Jumah states that President Chakwera will not listen to Malawians’ calls to defend a person doing wrong, just as he has done with corrupt individuals who are party loyalists.

He has however, assured Malawians that MRP has the solution for Malawi and is ready to bring in neutral politics to accommodate all and make them feel part of the government.

In a world where acts of kindness and generosity are sometimes overshadowed by negativity and despair, the Balaka District Dorcas Women of the Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) Church shine as a beacon of hope and compassion.

On May 31, 2024, these dedicated women embarked on a mission to spread love and charity at the Balaka Police Station, where they cheered up 42 suspects with a clean-up exercise and a hearty meal.

Led by the passionate Rachel Chambwinja, the Dorcas Women understood the struggles faced by the suspects in custody, who often lack access to basic necessities such as food due to financial constraints.

Recognizing the importance of supporting those in need, the women decided to take action and make a difference in the lives of these individuals awaiting their trial.

The clean-up exercise at the Balaka Police Station was not just about physical cleanliness, but also about uplifting the spirits of the suspects and showing them that they are not forgotten.

As the women worked diligently to spruce up the surroundings, a sense of camaraderie and unity filled the air, fostering a positive atmosphere that brought smiles to the faces of the suspects.

Following the clean-up, the Dorcas Women generously provided a nourishing meal for the 42 suspects, ensuring that they were well-fed and cared for during their time at the station.

The act of sharing food was not just about meeting a basic need, but also about showing love and compassion to those who may feel isolated and alone in their current situation.

Superintendent Salomy Osman of Balaka Police Station commended the District’s Dorcas Women for their heartfelt gesture, emphasizing the importance of such acts of kindness in fostering a sense of community and unity.

Osman encouraged other churches and organizations to follow in the footsteps of the Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) Church and provide support to vulnerable individuals in their communities.

The Balaka District SDA Dorcas Women’s initiative serves as a reminder that even in the midst of challenges and hardships, there is always an opportunity to spread hope and make a positive impact on the lives of others.

By reaching out with love and compassion, these women have not only brought joy to the suspects at Balaka Police Station but have also inspired a spirit of giving and kindness that resonates throughout the community.

Tricksters Arrested in Lilongwe: The Mwandikumbukira Scam

Lilongwe Police recently made headlines after arresting two notorious mwandikumbukira tricksters in the city.

Mike Thawale, 38, and James Magaleta, 33, were apprehended by the Station’s detectives while attempting to rob unsuspecting victims at Select and Save shops along Kamuzu Procession road.

The suspects, known for their deceptive tactics, would approach people with the phrase “mwandikumbukira” to gain their trust before swindling them out of their money.

They would then proceed to switch the victim’s cash with fake banknotes under the guise of helping them make cheaper purchases.

This scam has been their modus operandi since 2020 and 2008, respectively.

Thawale, hailing from Lipoche Village in Zomba, and Magaleta, from Chipologa Village in Machinga District, have a history of similar offenses.

Despite being convicted multiple times in the past, they were only given suspended sentences and ordered to repay the stolen funds to their victims.

The diligent work of the station’s detectives led to the apprehension of these habitual tricksters, who will now face charges of theft in court.

Their arrest serves as a warning to others who engage in such fraudulent activities, highlighting the importance of vigilance and awareness when dealing with strangers.

The case of Thawale and Magaleta sheds light on the prevalence of scams and the vulnerability of individuals to falling victim to cunning criminals.

It also underscores the role of law enforcement in cracking down on such illicit activities and ensuring that justice is served.

As Lilongwe Police continues their efforts to combat crime and protect the community, it is imperative for residents to remain cautious and report any suspicious behavior to the authorities.

High Court finds Anne Mumba guilty of murdering her husband

High Court in Lilongwe on Thursday June 6,2024,found Anne Mumba guilty of murdering her late husband Professor Peter Mumba, a chemistry lecturer at the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR).

Professor Mumba’s death on April 25,2020 was suspected to be due to poisoning, and Anne was arrested in August 2020 following postmortem results.

In his judgment, Judge Mzonde Mvula said Anne’s delays to take her husband to the hospital was an indication that she wanted the husband to die.

He added that if the Anne cared for her husband, she could have driven early to the hospital that was close to their home.

“The wife could have at least called the relatives of the husband about the deceased refusing to go to the hospital despite being sick.

“She should not have waited for an ambulance from Bunda as she herself is a driver and have cars of their own,” Mvula said.

The judge also blamed Anne’s swift return to Lilongwe after her husband’s burial.

But Anne wept in the witness box, whilst vehemently denying any involvement in her husband’s death.

She wept: ” God is my witness , I am not a gold digger. I loved my husband.”

Meanwhile,the court will deliver its sentence next month, pending the defense’s submission of mitigating circumstances.

Jumbe demands Chilumpha’s treason case be withdrawn

President of Chilungamo Party (CP) Alhaji Imraan Jumbe, has called upon the Malawi Government led by the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) to immediately withdraw the dormant case of Dr. Cassim Chilumpha and compensate him with K24 billion as justice delayed is indeed justice denied.

Jumbe says in a democratic society, the judiciary must serve as a pillar of fairness and prompt justice, unfortunately, the protracted legal battle forced by Dr. Chilumpha accused of Treason nearly two decades ago, highlights a grave miscarriage of justice in Malawi.



He says the case against Dr.Chilumpha accused of high-profile treason has languished in the courts for almost 20 years without resolution observing that such an extensive delay is not only unjust but also undermines the credibility of the legal system in Malawi.

Writing on his official face book page, Alhaji Jumbe says the protracted nature of this trial has deprived Dr. Chilumpha of his fundamental right to a timely and fair trial leaving him in a perpetual state of legal limbo.

Jumbe says when leaders allow politically motivated prosecutions to persist, it reflects a dangerous blend of power drunkenness and abdication of responsibility saying it is imperative for the current administration to break this cycle and demonstrate a commitment to genuine justice.

He  claims that Malawians commended the MCP Government for discontinuing the politically charged case against former President of the Republic Dr. Bakili Muluzi recognizing it as an exercise in political manipulation rather than a pursuit of justice.

The CP President says the decision to drop corruption charges against the current Vice President Dr. Saulosi Chilima, despite the widespread involvement of high-ranking officials allegedly to have benefited from Zuneth Sattar corruption basket fund, reflects an understanding that selective justice serves no one’s interest.

“The continued pursuit of Dr. Chilumpha’s case contradicts this principle, if justice Is to be consistent and impartial, it must be applied equally.” reads Alhaji Jumbe’s post on Facebook.

He says singling out individuals for prolonged legal battles while turning a blind eye to broader systematic issues is inherently unjust urging the authorities in Malawi to discontinue the case against Dr. Chilumpha and acknowledge the undue suffering he has endured.

Alhaji Jumbe says beyond discontinuing the case, it is only fair that Dr. Chilumpha be compensated for the years of his life marred by this prolonged legal ordeal saying he has requested K24 billion a sum that reflects not only the financial and reputation damage he has suffered.
