Hillary Chilomba takes over as ACB Acting Director General

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Deputy Director General (DDG) Hillary Chilomba is now the bureau’s Acting Director General (ADG) following the expiry of Martha Chizuma’s contract on May 31, 2024.

In a statement, ACB Principal Public Relations Officer Egrita Ndala says Chilomba’s appointment is in accordance with section 8 of the Corruption Practices Act.

“The ACB appreciates and values the great work and commitment shown by the former Director General Ms. Martha Chizuma in leading Malawians in the fight against corruption,” says Ndala in a statement.

She has therefore, asked all stakeholders to give the acting director general all the necessary support.

Chizuma was appointed ACB DG in 2021 by President Dr.Lazarus Chakwera.

It is on record that Chizuma did not seek renewal of her contract, citing a need for rest.

Some commentators describe Chizuma as a dedicated ACB DG, but they claim that political interference affected her commitment, leading her not to seek contract renewal.

First ever Korea-Africa summit starts with Chilima in attendance

The First ever Korea-Africa summit has started in Seoul-in Republic of Korea with a call for Korea and African countries to be committed to finding ways of expanding economic ties and cooperation in supply chain and development with the resource-rich countries.

President of the Republic of Korea, Yoon Suk Yeol, made the call on Tuesday during the official opening of a two-day Korea-Africa Summit currently underway in the country.

Chilima among the dignatories

Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima is among the Heads of State and Government including business people from across Africa with high expectations that the summit will increase various opportunities ranging from Trade, Agriculture, and tourism among others.

President Yoon Suk Yeol said South Korea aims to expand trade and investment with Africa through a series of agreements, such as Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) and Trade and Investment Promotion Frameworks (TIPFs).

He also vowed to support Africa’s efforts toward regional economic integration through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), launched in 2019.

“In terms of trade, we will speed up the signing of EPAs and TIPFs. On the investment front, we will expand investment protection agreements to promote exchanges between the two countries’ companies,” Yoon said in his opening address.

The summit has drawn together about 48 African countries such as Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Lesotho, Ivory Coast, Mauritius, Zimbabwe, Togo, Rwanda, Mozambique, Sao Tome and Principe, Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde, among others.

The summit is being held under the theme: The Future We Make Together: Shared Growth, Sustainability, and Solidarity.

Vitumbiko Gubuduza appointed NAM interim president

Vitumbiko Gubuduza has been appointed the new Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) interim-President with immediate.

The former Civonets Netball Club shooter and Blantyre and Districts Netball League (BDNL) chairperson will lead the association for a year with the support of interim general secretary Yamikani Kauma, treasurer Cecilia Mtukule-Bondwe and committee members Tamara Fweta, Fernando Ligola, Justice Katika and Margret Maluwa.

The interim committee was appointed during a round table discussion the Malawi National Council of Sport(MNCS) conducted with NAM regional and district committee chairpersons on Monday at Kamuzu Institute for Sports in Lilongwe following the resignation of the Abigail Sharif-led executive committee a few days ago.

In an interview with 247 Malawi News Editor Chisomo Phiri, Gubuduza said her committee will strive to unify the netball fraternity and make the sport a winning brand.

Gubuduza is a lawyer, who works as NBS Bank head of compliance.

NAM is the governing body of netball in Malawi.

Illusionz Club announces Mangochi’s Kingfisher as venue for beach festival

Illusionz Club in Lilongwe has announced that Kingfisher in Mangochi is the venue for its beach festival to be held from August 30 to  September 1,2024.

The club’s marketing executive Alinane Njolomole made the announcement on Monday during a press briefing at its premises in Lilongwe.

Njolomole said  the venue announcement was delayed because of high water levels in Lake Malawi, which have now dropped.


According to Njolomole, in addition to entertainment, the festival aims to promote local talent.

“The music industry is growing, and we want to be a part of that growth by promoting our local artists through such festivals,” said Njolomole.

Njolomole then made a call to the corporate world to partner with the Illusionz Club  in making the festival a big event, while promoting local artists and expanding its base.

Local artists Lulu and Zeze will be among the 15 performers at the festival, alongside South African artists Kabza De Small, DJ Maphorisa, and four other international acts.

Kalindo wants immigration chief Kalumo removed

Political activist and the Malawi First President, Bon Kalindo, has given
President Dr.Lazarus 24 hour-ultimatum to fire Director General(DG) of Immigration and Citizenship Services, Charles Kalumo saying he does not  have the capacity to manage the department.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lilongwe on Monday, Kalindo claimed that Kalumo has failed to demonstrate  his ability as a leader and instead Malawians continue to suffer in accessing passports under his leadership.

“From the time President Chakwera appointed retired general Kalumo, the Malawi Immigration went into the Intensive Care Unit,” said Kalindo.

The activist called on Malawians of good will to join all Immigration officers across the country for a shutdown this Thursday.

Kalindo also condemned arrests of human rights activists.

He said Malawi First is concerned with the recent arrest of Edward Kambanje, leader of Concerned Citizens of Malawi.

“We believe his arrest is politically motivated and it is hereby condemned totally,” said Kalindo.

He further bemoaned the torturing of people around Kasungu national parks by game rangers for coming into conflict with wild animals.

Kalumo who is a retired Malawi Defence Force (MDF) soldier, was appointed as head of the Immigration Department in 2022 by President Lazarus Chakwera.

Since his appointment, there have been complaints from workers over his conduct.

Recently, he redeployed several senior officers at the Department of Immigration.

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services falls under the Ministry of Homeland Security of the Republic of Malawi.

It is mandated to provide quality services to the general public in areas of border control, issuance of travel documents, residential and work permits, Visas and Citizenship to eligible persons.
