By Vincent Gunde

Leader of Mass Movement for Economic Revolution who is also Commandant Secretary General for Malawi First Independent Coalition for Civic Education Redson Munlo, says party leaders should not expect Malawians to vote for them out of sympathy but good policies.

Munlo said no one told him to join activism saying the activism he is doing is not against people or political parties assuring all that he will not allow people to vote for 2025 leaders basing on lies but good policies.

He said this is 2024, he will not laugh at stupidity saying if political parties are doing good for the people, he will stand up clapping hands but when parties are speaking useless, he will not support that but standing with Malawians to be against that particular party and leader.

Redson Munlo

Speaking through an audio clip circulating in various social media platforms, Munlo has advised the opposition DPP to build its house to order for it to move forward assuring it that in 2024 he will be analyzing party manifestos.

Munlo said he will be equipping Malawians with knowledge of each and every leader to be voted for so that Malawians make informed choice by taking leaders to answer questions on what preparations they have made for Malawians to trust them.

He has asked opposition parties to find solutions for Malawi saying Malawians are waiting for answers claiming that the DPP failed miserably in both inside and outside Parliament claiming that the infighting is still continuing in 2024 now to the Malawi Supreme Court of Appeal.

The Activist has told the DPP that party problems are too small than those of the country questioning it that if they are failing to end infighting within their party what trust can Malawians have on them that they can rule in 2025.

He said the opposition is there to offer constructive criticism to government through checks and balances and financial prudence claiming that if the opposition has failed, it has failed Malawians saying Malawians are sailing through difficult situations because of weak opposition.

“No one employed me, no one paid me and nobody has the wise to tell me what to do, I speak for the people not a political party,” said Munlo.

He has since assured the DPP that the opposition is not only itself, there’s UDF, UTM, PPM, AFORD, mafunde, and others, saying he will not be forced to speak backing stupidity, 2024 Is for building Malawi for it to move forward.

Of Killing the elderly people

By Burnett Munthali

Everyone has the right to life and the right to life includes the elderly people. Therefore, nobody has the right to take anyone’s life for whatever reason, we must all live.

On the other hand, whenever there’s a case there must be evidence to that case to prove beyond any reasonable doubt. Secondly, we have well established government institutions that take care of complaints, these are the police, the courts, and the prison. The complainants/people cannot take the place of complainants, Police, court and prison at the same time. The system to justice doesn’t work like that anywhere in the world.

The Challenge

According to The Daily Times, Twenty five elderly people were reportedly killed in 2023 on aviations of practicing witchcraft, the Malawi Network of Older Persons Organizations ( MANEPO) disclosed. The report says 56 senior citizens faced harassment largely on witchcraft allegations. In 2022, twenty three (23) elderly people were killed fire being suspected of practicing witchcraft.

It is therefore surprising that the society keeps targeting senior citizens in witchcraft suspicions. I think there’s something wrong somewhere which must be corrected now or else everyone who becomes old will become victim of such circumstances in the near future. If witchcraft exists it cannot be specifically focus on one particular age group of people. It could probably be a mixture of all age groups of people for sure.

Senior citizens are among those vulnerable groups because they are weak to defend themselves. Is Malawi doing justice by targeting people who are too weak to fight back? This makes the elderly people even more vulnerable as communities continue to turn against them.

It is therefore interesting that Hon Ken Zikhale Ng’oma decided to celebrate New Year with the elderly in his constituency. This is a bold and very good step taken by the Member of Parliament and cabinet Minister of Homeland Security which everyone must emulate from.

The reality of witchcraft is that it is a practice which has been there from time immemorial. It is there in the Bible. Dealing with witchcraft had always been very complicated and difficult in our society and sometimes leads to loss of life to innocent victims through mob justice.

In conclusion, let us love the elderly people as we would love ourselves when we grow old because nobody will forever remain young. The elderly are lucky to reach old age but if they have a case to answer, communities should have valid evidence against them for whatever case it could be to prove in court. Otherwise, we should avoid monopolizing the role of complainant, Police, Court and Prison Warders. Bravo to Hon Ken Zikhale Ng’oma for demonstrating that love for the elderly people!

Is this the end of the road? Nankhumwa , Jeffrey hits blank wall as Supreme court throws out appeal

By Chisomo Phiri

Supreme Court of Appeal Judge Justice Dorothy Nyakaunda has nailed a last nail by throwing out the application by Kondwani Nankhumwa, Grezelder Jeffrey and Cecilia Chazama who were challenging Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) president Peter Mutharika’s decision to remove them from their positions in the party.

The trio wanted an interim relief against Mutharika’s decision as well as a nullification of the resolutions made during a national governing council meeting held on December 13, 2023 in Mangochi.

Nankhumwa, future uncertain

However, on Wednesday afternoon Nyakaunda thrown out the application with costs.

Nyakaunda told indicated that the Supreme Court’s ruling sustains the ruling of the High Court which last week also dismissed a similar application by the trio.

High Court Judge Howard Pemba said the trio’s political rights were not violated by Mutharika’s decisions.

Last month, Mutharika appointed Kondwani Nankhumwa as presidential advisor after removing him from his position as vice president-south.

The DPP leader also removed Cecilia Chazama from her position as director of women and appointed her as presidential advisor while the party’s secretary general Grezelder Jeffrey was appointed as vice president-centre.

In their challenge , the three argued that Mutharika has no power to remove them from their original positions because they were elected to the positions during the party’s convention in 2018.

When re-assigning the three, Mutharika said he used Article 10(8) of the DPP constitution which says the president has powers to assign a member of DPP national governing council to any public or political office.

Many political and governance experts agree that DPP’s talk of returning to power will remain a far-fetched dream if these conflicts are not timely addressed.
