President of the People’s Transformation Party (PETRA) Kamuzu Chibambo has urged the Attorney General(AG) Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda and the Malawi Environmental Protection Authority (MEPA) to speedily vacate an injunction which 11 plastic manufacturing companies obtained from the High Court on June 25, 2024 stopping government from enforcing the thin plastics ban.

Chibambo says thin plastics have a huge negative impact on the environment, citing the recent floods and cyclones as some of the effects that have hit the country due to the country’s failure to conserve the environment.

He acknowledged awareness of external economic situations and climatic weather conditions that have negatively affected small-scale businesses across the African region.

Chakwera, therefore, expressed excitement to be part of the gathering, inviting vendors to share challenges they face.

“I am excited to be amongst you here as I invited you in order to hear for myself challenges that you are facing,” he said,

However, I am aware of some of these challenges. You may be aware that my government has plans to cushion these challenges and some are waiting for procurement procedures, said Chakwera.

He highlighted government programmes like the National Economic Empowering Fund which will continue providing immediate solutions to vendors challenges.

Chakwera, however, asked people in the eastern region to continue supporting his government.

Vendors from Zomba, Ntaja, Machinga, Liwonde, Balaka, Nsanama, Mangochi Municipal and Monkey Bay attended the event.

The vendors raised issues like Tropical Cyclone Freddy and drought which have left them destitute.

Chairperson for Zomba Vendors Union, Ayatu Chidothi expressed excitement for the opportunity to interact with the President, acknowledging previous lack of such access.

Chidothi observed the challenges small and medium entrepreneurs were facing due to climatic conditions, but thanked the government for providing loans to cushion them from the shocks.

He, however, requested for revision of the loan conditions to benefit business people and asked local government through councils to construct modern market shelters across the region.

Muvi wa Chilungamo raises a point of order on Mec Chairperson

President and Commander in Chief of Muvi wa Chilungamo Revolutionary Party (MRP) Bantu Saunders Jumah, has raised a point of order over the remarks made by Mec Chairperson Justice Anabel Mtalimanja that she has contradicted herself on promoting democratic leadership through the citizens’ vote.

Jumah said in her speech, Justice Mtalimanja said voting is not only a right but a civic duty for the citizens to choose their own leaders but she underlined that no citizen will be allowed to vote without a national Identity Card in the 2025 elections.

Mtalimanja

He has argued with Mtalimanja that citizens have obligations to choose leaders of their choice but wondering why Mec has put conditions on the citizens that no Identity Card no vote for candidates in the 2025 elections if voting is a right.

Speaking through a Revolutionary voice in various social media platforms, Jumah said Malawians are all aware that the MCP politicized the National Registration Bureau (NRB) and the condition set by Mec on the voters is clearly speaking for itself that Mec is not ready to conduct free elections in Malawi.

Jumah said government is struggling to print passports, driving licenses and why putting tough conditions on voters saying until the time the NRB assures Malawians that all Malawians will take part in the voting processes of 2025, Malawians will trust Mec.

He said it is only in Malawi where a Minister rose up from bed to change laws governing elections claiming that in 2017, MCP supported a bill of 50 plus 1 majority win while the DPP rejected it because it was in government then.

The MRP President said today, the MCP is doing all of what it can to remove 50 plus 1 majority win to revert back to the old system First Past the Post (FPTP) as it was in 1994 thanking the Constitutional Court for imposing 50 plus 1 saying the MRP is in support of it.

He said in 2017 President Chakwera condemned the former DPP regime for corruption and today, he is not questioning his two ministers dishing out over K76 million to voters so that they are voted at the party’s elective conference to be held in August, 2024.

“Malawi’s political stupidity is impinging development and the better future of the country, Malawi need to do away with politics of stupidity,” said Jumah.

He said this is the time for Malawians to wake-up to protect and save the country from the devil claiming that in Zambia, K41 million was found being externalized by foreigners saying all this was done with the Malawi Police Service, Secret Intelligence Service and Malawi Defence Force not tracing the money.

Jumah has noted with a grave concern that if foreigners are exporting Malawi currencies bypassing all the security agencies, saying this is answering a question that Malawi is not safe and is safe only to those that are in government.

Development Aid from People to People (DAPP) Malawi has launched an innovative initiative aimed at reducing waste and promoting sustainability through the reuse and modification of worn-out and damaged second-hand clothes.

The project, dubbed “Repair, Re-design, and Re-use,” is being piloted at Mikolongwe Vocational School in Chiradzulu, where students are learning to repair and repurpose old clothes into useful items such as moppers, bags, table mats, and doormats.

According to the school’s principal, Charles Salema, this initiative has the potential to significantly reduce textile waste in the country.

“By adopting this approach, we can conserve the environment and reduce the amount of waste generated from textiles,” he said.

Salema emphasized that the project is not only beneficial for the environment but also provides students with valuable skills in tailoring and entrepreneurship.

He said the project is expected to benefit the wider community, as the school plans to open its doors to the public to collect worn-out clothes and offer them a chance to be upgraded.

“The resulting products will either be sold or donated to hospitals, providing an additional source of income for the students,” said Salema.

One of the students benefiting from the project, Carlo Kafumbwe from Phalombe, expressed her gratitude for the skills she has gained.

“These skills will help me generate income when I return home,” she said.
