Malawi doing well in dealing with new HIV infections

Malawi is said to be doing a great job in dealing with the new HIV infections after registering a decline in the infections by 73% between 2010 and 2022.

Briefing the media in Lilongwe, ahead of World Aids Day commemorations, Minister of Health Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda, said Aids-related deaths have also been reduced by 68% during the same period.

On the UNAids 2030 targets, Chiponda said Malawi is close to achieving the 95.95:95 treatment targets, as of June 2023, the country was at 94. 99.95.

“Out of an estimated 1 million people living with HIV in Malawi, 927,000 were alive on lifelong antiretroviral treatment by end of June 2023,” she said.

Chiponda further said more needs to be done to save the young population as they continue to register high new HIV infection rates.

The minister said of the estimated 1 million people living with HIV in the country, over 900 thousand people are on lifelong Antiretroviral Treatment.

Meanwhile,the United States Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of African Affairs Melanie Higgins, has hailed Malawi for the strides made in the fight against the pandemic.

Speaker Gotani Hara says Parliament committed to make Malawi a corrupt-free nation

Speaker of Parliament Catherine Gotani Hara says Parliament is always committed to make Malawi a nation free from corruption activities.

Speaking on Wednesday during Parliament’s Anti-Corruption Day commemoration, the speaker indicated that the general assembly has a full responsibility of making sure that institutions fighting corruption such as the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) are allocated enough resources if the country is to win the battle against the vice.

Hara said apart from the allocation of resources parliament has also an oversight role whereby it makes checks and balances to ensure transparency and accountability in the way public resources are used.

She said:”It is also our responsibility to speak against corruption and raise awareness in our respective constituencies.”

Hara also warned that Parliament will not relent or spare anyone in the fight against corruption.

“As the legislative arm of government we also need to do more on the oversight role to make sure that public resources are utilised in line with public interests and all public officers should be held accountable.

“As Parliament, we will not relent and we will not spare anyone in this fight. “She said.

On his part,the Clerk of Parliament, Fiona Kalemba, reiterated the Speaker’s sentiments that Parliament will not slow down in the fight against corruption.

“At Parliament, we are not slowing down. In fact, to the contrary, we are pushing forward with even greater focus and a lot of energy. Our commitment to this cause remains resolute and our progress speaks volumes about our dedication.” Said the Clerk.

Kalemba further described the Anti-Corruption Bureau Day Commemoration as a symbol for Parliament’s unwavering determination and the significant strides that the institution has made in the fight against the vice.

The Clerk also highlighted measures that Parliament has taken to curb corruption which she said includes establishment of various committees which are raising awareness on the evils of fraud and corruption.

The commemoration was part of the Silver Jubilee for the Anti-Corruption Bureau(ACB).

Parliament of Malawi through its Institutional Integrity Committee commemorated its first Anti-Corruption Day on 30th November, 2022.

The Anti-Corruption Day has become an annual event and provides an opportunity to Members of Parliament and staff to show their commitment towards the fight against corruption.

Pastor arrested for defiling biological daughter

A 40-year-old Christopher Phiri who is a prophet and founder of Supernatural Embassy Ministry is in police custody in Mangochi for allegedly sleeping with his biological daughter aged 16.

According to Mangochi Police spokesperson Amina Tepani Daudi has told us that, the girl’s parents divorced when she was two years old and since then, she has been staying with her mother until September this year when he requested the victim to be staying with him.

She said in November rumours started flying that the girl was being forced to perform wife duties.

Police then interrogated the two separately after being tipped by people on November 28.

And during the interrogation, they found nude pictures and pornographic videos of the two in the prophet’s phone.

The publicists said upon being quizzed, the girl narrated the ordeal and added that his father threatened her that he would stop paying for school fees.

The victim was then issued with a referral letter to Koche Health Centre where it was revealed that she was carnally known.

The incident happened between September to November, 2023 at Kela Village Traditional Authority (T/A) Mponda in the district.

Meanwhile, the prophet is expected to appear before court upon completion of paperwork.

He hails from Manjawira Village Traditional Authority (T/A) Phambala in Ntcheu.

FDH Bank raises up its sponsorship towards Flames to K1 billion

One of the top financial institutions, FDH Bank has today announced increasing its sponsorship towards Malawi’s National Football Team,the Flames from K360 million to K1 billion covering four years from 2024.

This means that the team will be receiving K250 million each year up to 2027.

Announcing the sponsorship increment at Mount Soche Hotel in Blantyre on Friday, the FDH Bank Managing Director Noel Mkulichi said they have done this in order to further contribute towards the development of the football game in the country.

Said, Mkulichi:” At FDH Bank, we love football game and this is why we have decided to increase our sponsorship package so that the national team is not struggling in its activities.”

Asked on whether the bank is satisfied with the national football team’s current performance or not, Mkulichi said:” Yes, we are very satisfied with the team’s performance and we believe that it will continue doing better. Having qualified at Cosafa challenge is also another thing that has encouraged us to boost our sponsorship.”

The FDH Managing Director then urged FAM officials to keep on using the sponsorship money honestly so that the association attracts more donors.

In his few remarks, FAM President Walter Nyamilandu Manda hailed FDH Bank for the sponsorship increment.

“To be honest, I am very happy and at the same time surprised. I did not expect FDH Bank to make this huge sponsorship towards FAM amidst economic challenges. I am very excited and I assure the bank that the money will be used accordingly to uplift the football game in the country,” said Nyamilandu in a happy face.

The FAM boss then urged other companies and organizations to emulate the kind gesture by FDH Bank by contributing what little they have towards the Flames’ activities.

FDH Bank has been the national football team partner since February 2016.

DPP to appeal against Chilumpha’s treason case discharge

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has penned a notice of appeal to the Supreme Court of Appeal against the discharge of a treason case involving former Vice president Dr. Cassim Chilumpha and Yusuf Matumula.

On October 18 this year, the High court judge Justice Ruth Chinangwa discharged the case following Dr. Chilumpha’s application that the case, had taken too long to be completed.

Said Justice Chinangwa in her ruling:“It is argued that the State has not shown any interest in prosecuting the matter for over 11 years by taking any step in the prosecution of the matters.

“This inordinate delay on the part of the State is inexcusable and unjustifiable in any circumstances. Even if the matter was somehow heard by the Court a trial would neither be fair nor credible considering the delay involved.”

She added:“Apart from that, the State is also asking the court for a further 90 days if at all they were to continue prosecuting the matter. It seems that this matter was a forgotten cause for the State.”

But DPP argues that the high court erred in law by misapplying the law to the facts, among other grounds hence the appeal.

However, commenting on the DPP’s decision, Chilumpha,just said:”It is a very disappointing development, but it should not surprise anyone.”

Chilumpha was arrested in May 2006 together with Matumula on allegations of plotting to kill former president late Bingu wa Mutharika using assassins hired from South Africa.

They were accused of the offences of treason contrary to section 38 of the Penal Code & conspiracy to murder contrary to section 227 of the Penal Code.

Chilumpha and the late Mutharika fell out in 2005 after the former president left United Democratic Front , a party that sponsored him into power in 2004, to form his Democratic Progressive Party.
