Kabaza operators, Mchinji council join forces to enhance safety

In a bid to improve safety and coordination between council and Kabaza operators, the Malawi Coalition for Kabaza Stakeholders and Association (MACOKASA) on Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Mchinji District Council.

In his remarks, National Chairperson for MACOKASA, Moses Mwalabu, emphasized the association’s commitment to bringing safety and opportunities to Kabaza operators.

“We aim to provide loans and other resources to help operators develop their businesses and conduct their services in a safe and orderly manner,” he said.


Director of Administration for Mchinji District Council Hastings Mlambuzi, hailed the MoU as a milestone in maintaining order in the Kabaza business.

Mchinji Police Officer In-Charge, John Nkhoma, welcomed the association, stating that it will help Kabaza operators abide by rules and regulations.

“With MACOKASA, we can create by-laws that will safeguard operators and bring them to order,” he said.

Through the partnership, the council and MACOKASA are set to conduct awareness campaigns to educate operators about safety and regulations, promoting a safer and more coordinated Kabaza business in the district.

Chakwera to launch Agriculture Mechanisation Initiative

President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera will today preside over the official launch of the Agriculture Mechanisation initiative at  BICC in Lilongwe.

The initiative is being facilitated by Phillip Morris International, along with its implementing partner, Pyxus, which has provided seed capital funding for the purchase of 23 tractors which  are expected to be owned by entrepreneurs in the country.

The launch of the initiative will help farmers to access tractors through loans to maximize their agricultural productivity as part of implementing agriculture Commercialisation, Mega Farm initiative, and the Agriculture Tourism Mining strategy (ATM).

During his State of the National Address (SONA), President Chakwera highlighted that the government will continue its intensified effort to support subsistence commercial farming through the use of modern equipment such as tractors and combined harvesters to embrace mechanization and improve the agricultural system in the country.

President Chakwera has also demonstrated his commitment to revamp the agriculture sector through the launch of the Private Sector Mega Farm Implementation initiative, engaging private individuals and institutions in the implementation of the mega farm initiative.

Kawale praises AGRA for its dedication to transforming Malawi’s agriculture sector

Minister of Agriculture, Sam Kawale, has praised Alliance for a Green Revolution Africa (AGRA) for its dedication to transforming the agriculture sector in Malawi.

Speaking on Wednesday at the launch of the five-year Youth Entrepreneurship for the Future of Food and Agriculture Programme at Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC), Kawale expressed the Ministry’s commitment to empowering youth to drive food system transformation and create dignified job opportunities for young people, including those with disabilities.

“As the Ministry of Agriculture, we are passionate about cultivating a bright future for Malawi with a legacy of agriculture excellence,” Kawale said .

On his part, Minister of Youth and Sports, Uchizi Mkandawire, echoed Kawale’s sentiment, acknowledging the immense potential of youth in developing the country through agriculture.

He said:”Young people are the driving force for economic growth, and this programme is a significant step towards empowering them through entrepreneurship in the agriculture sector.”

Secretary for Youth and Sports, Isaac Katopola, said that the initiative marks a crucial milestone in achieving sustainable agriculture and climate-resilient food systems.

The programme launch, themed “Empowering Youth for Decent Jobs and Climate-Resilient Food Systems,” featured lively discussions on addressing challenges and opportunities for sustainable food systems transformation in Malawi.

The event was a resounding success, paving the way for a brighter future for Malawi’s agriculture sector.

Microfinance institutions urged to support women

Microfinance institutions in the country have been urged to develop policies that prioritize financial support for women.

This call was made by Malawi Microfinance Network Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Duncan Phulusa, during the ‘Women in Microfinance Meeting’ held in Salima district on Wednesday.

Phulusa emphasized the need for collaborative efforts among microfinance institutions to empower women, which will also contribute to reducing gender-based violence.

“By supporting women, we can create a ripple effect of positive change in our communities,” he said.

On her part, Thandiwe Thipa, Internal Controls Manager at Microfinance Loan Foundation, praised the meeting, stating that it has the potential to uplift women’s livelihoods and promote financial independence.

“This initiative is a crucial step towards creating a more inclusive and equitable financial landscape,” she said.

Reserve Bank of Malawi(RBM) Executive Director, Mercy Kumbatira, who graced the meeting, commended the microfinance sector for its efforts, progress, and significant strides in promoting financial inclusion.

She said:”We are committed to supporting initiatives that empower women and promote economic growth.”

The meeting  brought together stakeholders in the microfinance sector to discuss ways to increase financial support for women and promote gender equality.

Author Micah Kanyenda Kamanga releases latest book’Torn Asunder

A female author, Micah Kanyenda Kamanga, based at Dwangwa Trading Centre in Nkhotakota, has released her latest book, titled ‘Torn Asunder’.

In an interview, Kanyenda Kamanga said that the book tells the tale of two lovers, Towera and Steve, whose unwavering affection faces a severe test when Steve becomes entangled in his professional responsibilities.

When asked what motivated her to write the book, she said:”I just wanted to show how much others are willing to endure for their loved ones.”
