By Vincent Gunde

Dowa District Council’s Chairperson Councilor Mayamiko Kambewa, has called upon local structures in the district that they are a key to supervise and monitor projects which are being implemented by government and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) for the good of their communities.

Kambewa said the duty to supervise and monitor projects should not be left to council officials alone but local structures are there on sight seeing exactly what is it is being implemented and can provide reports to the council on the progress being made.

Councilor Mayamiko Kambewa….. local structures are Key to community development

He said chiefs, Village and Area Development Committees need to know their roles in supervising and monitoring projects so that whenever an organization has exited its project, sustainability measures of the project should not be a challenge.

Speaking in an interview on a District Level Dialogue Sessions which brought together council members, chiefs and Area Development Committees held at the boma, Kambewa said such dialogue sessions are very important because participants share experiences, challenges and lessons learnt of projects being implemented in the district.
“The Dialogue Sessions provide an oversight role in the implementation of development window such as CDF, DDF, and Gesd among others,” he said.

Kambewa was commenting on a 5-year USAID -funded initiative, Parliamentary Support Program to be implemented by Democracy International in partnership with Global Partners Governance (GPG) and other partners in Dowa district.

The Program is aimed at assisting the Parliament of Malawi to fulfill its goals outlined in the 2021-2026 Strategic Plan focusing on improving the legislative and oversight roles of Parliament, strengthening institutional coordination for public integrity management and improving civic engagement in policy and oversight.

One of the strategic interventions being championed by the program is to bridge the experiences of MPs, and local development structures in the implementation of Constituency Development Fund (CDF), the initiative facilitates dialogue between MPs and constituents to address challenges related to the allocation and implementation of development projects.

To contribute to the strengthening of local development structures, in February, 2024 the program organized a 2-day constituency support training for selected MPs and representatives of local development structures for participants to understanding local development processes, their legal mandates, and strategies for fostering improved collaboration between MPs and their constituents in facilitating local development activities.

The District Level Dialogue Sessions have objectives of facilitating meaningful engagement between MPs and constituents, raising awareness and understanding among constituents about the roles and responsibilities of MPs as well as the functions of local development structures to promote effective citizen participation in governance and development processes.

President of the Association of Social Workers in Malawi (ASWiM), Chisangalalo Ntonio, has urged social workers to play a vital role in preventing teen pregnancies in the country.

He made the appeal in Blantyre on Tuesday during the graduation ceremony of social workers.

Ntonio said,29% of Malawi’s population growth is attributed to teen pregnancies, hence a need for social workers to prioritize sexual reproduction education and support young people.

“We must work together to address this critical issue, and I believe that social workers have the power to make a real difference in the lives of young people,” Ntonio said.

South African therapist and social worker Sheila Naran, who works with Valued Citizen Initiatives, attended the ceremony and praised the certification of the workers, describing it as a significant step forward in enhancing social work in the country.

“This training will enable social workers to provide comprehensive services to their clients, particularly in addressing teen pregnancies,” Naran said.

Michelle Mtilatila, a social work service practitioner, expressed enthusiasm for the training, stating that it will empower them to educate others on confidently expressing themselves regarding sexuality.

She said:”We are now better equipped to provide guidance and support to young people, helping them make informed decisions about their sexual health.” .

The graduation ceremony marked the completion of a comprehensive 7-week training program for 49 social workers, covering various aspects of human sexuality, including sexual reproduction, contraception, and sexually transmitted infections.

The training also focused on equipping social workers with necessary skills to provide counseling and support services to clients.

NICE calls on political party leaders to prioritize political tolerance

By Burnett Munthali

National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE) has called on political party leaders in the country to prioritize political tolerance within their communities and avoid creating no-go zones.

Dowa District Programs Officer, Alinafe Chikakuda said this during an engagement meeting with political leaders at Mondwe in the area of Traditional Authority Kayembe in the district.

Chikakuda stressed the importance of upholding political tolerance; saying that multi-party democracy provides opportunities for all citizens to participate in political activities.

In her remarks, Malawi Congress Party Constituency chairlady, Ruth Wonderson hailed the NICE for spearheading efforts to promote political tolerance and inclusivity.

Dowa West Democratic Progressive Party governor Jamison Chanziya said their party would support the idea of promoting tolerance and peaceful coexistence among political entities in the region.

Mature democracy may increase societal pluralism through encouraging and educating people to be tolerant, such as respecting others’ rights, respecting diversity of individuals and groups, and caring for every group’s well-being. Conversely, limited democracy allows the possibility of inequality.

Tolerance is important because it provides a more cohesive, peaceful society. People who are free to express themselves freely and peacefully without fear of persecution are more likely to live happier lives as functional members of society. Diversity lends itself to a more robust society.

Progress is difficult it not impossible in an intolerant society. Intolerance breeds separation, misunderstanding, and hostility between groups. When groups have no opportunity to settle their disagreements by discussion, they are apt to resort to fighting.

In March 2021, Malawi Congress Party (MCP) pushed the blame on political violence that erupted in Nsanje central to the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

Six people were seriously injured when MCP and DPP supporters were engaged in political violence in the area ahead of the highly contested March 30 by-election that year.

In February 2024, Thugs armed with stones, panga knives and catapults wore masks and disguised themselves and damaged cars, injuring people and chased Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) members who gathered on Saturday 24 February, 2024 at Mbowe filling Station in  Lilongwe.

A lorry registered LA 9108” belonging to one of the MCP officials was spotted carrying thugs at Mbowe filling station where DPP members gathered in readiness for their Blue Convoy Parade.

Some DPP members were severely hacked and their personal cars badly damaged in the fracas including various property was stolen

In March 2024, The Malawi Police Service (MPS), for the first time, blamed political leaders for fanning political violence.

National Police spokesperson Peter Kalaya said violence during electioneering could end if political leaders controlled their youth.

In one of my HardTalk interviews, Social commentator Rick Dzida says Statistics on the ground, Burnett, reveal that MCP and DPP are the only parties which will most likely  take over government in 2025.

All political alliances  will have to include one of these two parties if ever they want to emerge victorious in 2025 Tripartite General Elections.

This implies that both MCP and DPP have massive political following and if they resort to fighting each other, it is like big elephants fighting while innocent grass is suffering. The big loser is the grass because for sure one elephant will emerge a victor.  This situation must be avoided at all cost.
