A team comprising officials from Clooney Foundation on Friday 17 November, 2023 held a meeting with Malawi President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera.

Clooney Foundation for Justice was established in late 2016 by George and Amal Clooney to advance justice in courtrooms, classrooms and communities around the world.

Speaking while welcoming the officials, led by Ms. Amal Clooney on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York two months ago, Chakwera said was delighted to welcome the Clooney Foundation team to Kamuzu Palace describing the trip as fruitful and productive.

“More significantly, I am so inspired by the international support that Malawi has with respect to gender justice that I wish to take advantage of this occasion to announce the renewal of Malawi’s goal of ending the practice of child marriage by 2030. This may sound like a goal too ambitious, but for the millions of girls in our country, this is already a goal too far away,” he said.

The president said cannot accept that by the end of this decade, the practice of marrying underage girls should still exist anywhere within borders with impunity.

An Associate Professor in Economics at the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) Betchani Tchereni, has called for reports on the austerity measures announced by President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera to be available to the citizens from January, 2024 so that Malawians can appreciate the progress of the measures.

Tchereni observes that some time back, President Chakwera announced the same austerity measures so that money saved be channeled to equally important projects but to this day, there is no such report.

Betchani Tchereni

He said he tried to follow-up on the report but some junior officers after knowing that the screws and nuts have been made tight, they started sabotaging the government by threatening him to close his big mouth.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Times Television anchored by Brian Banda on Saturday evening, Tchereni said the report on the austerity measures is very important as this will show how much money in forex has been saved by the government.

Tchereni observed that announcing the austerity measures some of which are stopping global trotting by the President and his Ministers up to March, 2024 is good news to the country but the chorus is on action and implementation.

He asked President Chakwera to take personal responsibility taking a whip by himself for all to implement the measures and Minister of Finance Simplex Chithyola Banda not to allow fellow Ministers to dictate to him on the importance of attending meetings and seminars but to delegate.

The Economist said he is optimistic that Malawi cannot follow the path of Zimbabwe where it was declared bankrupt advising Minister of Agriculture Sam Kawale and Minister of Mining Monica Chayang’anamuno not to wear suits but to produce food and resources for economic stability in Malawi.

The academic appealed to President Chakwera and Chithyola Banda that time to make sure that Principal Secretaries are not abusing resources is now, saying all have a duty to accept and not one coming that this is important.

Tchereni said Zambia faced the same path in economy like Malawi, they knock-off the zeroes on their currency, worked on their energies by empowering young people to be industrious, buying machines for making soap, cooking oil, yoghurt, their economy started to pick-up and become strong.

“We should all work on the economy by being productive, success is not in politics, young people must not be made to take politics for their successes, they should not find time to be in politics,” said Tchereni.

He called upon young people to be productive and stop being abused by a political party in government and advising government to stop financing things that are not productive for the austerity measures announced by President Chakwera to bear fruits.

Democratic Progressive Party(DPP) National Governing Committee(NGC) member Ken Msonda says he and his collegues Joe Nyirongo and Fredrick Malata are receiving death threats from other Senior DPP members.

Msonda made the remarks during a press briefing he, Nyirongo and Malata organized in Lilongwe on Sunday to address the current challenges and hostilities facing the party .

Msonda stated that him, Nyirongo and Malata are receiving death threats because of not being in support with Peter Mutharika’s presidential candidacy at the party’s convention but also fighting for a democratic course in the party to allow every member interested to run for Presidency at the Party’s convention have a clear equal and clear path.

He also added that thugs have been hired to kill them for a bounty of 1 million Kwacha .

“Pali ena apatsidwa K1 million aliyense kuti aphe atatufe kaamba koti tikulimbana ndamutharika mchipani cha DPP. Koma sakudziwa kuti zomwe tikupanga ife mkuchikonda chipani cha DPP komanso kuwakonda a Peter Mutharika.Kulimbananafe mkutaya nthawi chabe,”said Msonda.

He indicated that he and his collegues are not afraid of the death threats being channelled to them because they are brave and fearless.

“Can you zoom out faces , do you see a face filled with fear here?”, said Msonda .

He added that DPP will not triumph in the 2025 presidential election if it does not solve the current leadership wrangle.

Msonda disclosed that the three also went to court to seek court’s interpretation on whether Mutharika is eligible to contest for presidency once more because the party’s constitution does not allow him to do so.

On his part, Fredrick Malata who is DPP Deputy Director of political affairs said if Mutharika thinks of standing again, he should explain his efforts made so far to bring their house in order.

He also asked Mutharika to explain why since 2013, he has not called for a National Governing Council (NGC) meeting which led to withdraw of some senior officials.

The party’s Director of Operations Joe Nyirongo asked Mutharika to stop the act of racism and love all party members equally in order to bring sanity in the party.

This comes barely days after Peter Mutharika and other key DPP members organized a press conference to address issues facing the country.
