Why Malawians Don’t Need the return of Joyce Banda: A Reflection on the Cashgate Scandal and Mismanagement of the Economy

By Twink Jones Gadama

Cashgate was a term that struck fear and anger into the hearts of Malawians during Joyce Banda’s presidency. The scandal, which involved massive theft of taxpayers’ money, highlighted the corruption and mismanagement that plagued the country during her tenure. In addition to the Cashgate scandal, Malawi suffered from unnecessary devaluation of the kwacha, high inflation rates, and overall economic instability under Banda’s leadership. Despite her attempts to make a comeback and contest in next year’s elections, many Malawians believe that they do not need Joyce Banda at the helm of their country once again. In this essay, we will explore the reasons why Malawians reject the idea of Joyce Banda returning to power.

Joyce Banda, planning to contest in 2025?

One of the most glaring reasons why Malawians do not want Joyce Banda back in office is the deep distrust that has been fostered by the Cashgate scandal. The scandal, which involved government officials siphoning off millions of dollars from state coffers, revealed the extent of corruption and greed that was rampant in Banda’s administration. The fact that such a massive theft of public funds could occur under her watch eroded the trust of the Malawian people in their government and its leaders. The wounds caused by Cashgate are still fresh in the minds of many Malawians, and they are understandably hesitant to trust Banda with power once again.

Furthermore, Malawians point to Banda’s track record of mismanagement and economic instability as reasons why they do not want her back in office. During her presidency, the kwacha was devalued multiple times, leading to increased prices of goods and services and hurting the purchasing power of the average Malawian. Inflation rates soared, making it difficult for many to afford basic necessities. The economy stagnated, and development projects were delayed or abandoned. Malawians remember the hardships they endured during Banda’s presidency, and they are unwilling to gamble on her leadership again.

Additionally, Banda’s decision to run for office again after the damage caused during her previous term raises questions about her motivations and priorities. Some Malawians believe that her desire to return to power is driven by personal gain rather than a genuine desire to serve the country. The fact that Banda is willing to overlook the harm caused by her previous administration in favor of political ambition is troubling to many Malawians. They fear that her return to office would only serve to further entrench corruption and mismanagement in the country.

The reasons why Malawians do not need Joyce Banda are clear. The wounds caused by the Cashgate scandal have not fully healed, and the memories of economic instability and mismanagement under her leadership remain fresh in the minds of many. Banda’s decision to run for office again raises concerns about her motivations and priorities. Malawians have suffered enough under her leadership, and they are rightfully hesitant to trust her with power once again. It is crucial for the country to move forward with leaders who are committed to transparency, accountability, and good governance.

The Malawi Electoral Commission’s (MEC) Regional Elections Manager for the South, King Norman Rudi has called on Malawians who wish to vote in the 2025 general elections to register with the commission and not necessarily rely on national IDs for voting.

Rudi made the remarks on Tuesday in Mzuzu at a district youth dialogue meeting which it conducted in collaboration with Youth and Society (YAS).

Programmes Coordinator for Youth and Society, Mwandida

The meeting, which was conducted under the Malawi Support Elections Programme, was aimed at providing a platform for young people and various stakeholders to discuss electoral processes and law reform ahead of the 2025 general elections.

“In September 2024, we will begin the process of registering prospective voters. Many people think that because they registered with the National Registration Bureau and have national IDs, then it’s enough for them to go and vote.

“That isn’t registration of voters. You will be required to register in the voter roll when registration of voters start for you to be eligible for voting. We need the media and various stakeholders to help us in disseminating this information to people,” said Rudi.

He also disclosed that in the next elections which will be held on 16th September 2025, people will cast their votes from 6AM to 4PM and that the day will be a public holiday.

In her remarks, Programmes Coordinator for Youth and Society, Mwandida Theu said as Civil Society Organizations, they have a crucial role to play in educating the masses on law reforms and to encourage them to take part in electoral processes.

“Through our project, we are also targeting young people because we understand that they have limited capacity when it comes to electoral processes. Once we educate them, it will help in ensuring a high voter turn-out,” said Theu.

Among others, Section 80 (2) of the Malawi Electoral Commission Act has been amended to provide for what should happen if the first poll does not yield a winner at the set threshold of more than fifty percent of valid votes cast.

Minister of Agriculture, Sam Kawale, has reassured Malawians that government is working towards raising a US$150 million deficit needed to complete phase 1 of the Shire Valley Transformation Program (SVTP).

Kawale was speaking in Chikwawa after inspecting works at the SVTP site and interacting with members of Kambadwe Cooperative on Friday.

“We visited SVTP site to witness first-hand the progress of the construction. We are aware of the delays which occurred due to the cyclone, but today I’ve seen tremendous progress,” Kawale said.

On concerns over availability of resources, Kawale disclosed that discussions are ongoing with some development partners for the project.

Kawale said the recent passed 2024/2025 budget, resources were allocated for the project and development partners are eager to ensure the programme’s completion.

The Minister is optimistic that the vision of having a food-secure nation will become a reality through the SVTP.

Senior Chief Kasisi concurred with Kawale that food security will only be achieved through irrigation farming.

“Currently, we only harvest once a year but once the SVTP project is completed, these cooperatives will be having multiple harvests in a year,” said chief Kasisi.

Secretary for Kambadwe Cooperative, Anne Kholophethe, said the project will transform lives as they already identified markets for the cash crops they will be producing as a cooperative.

“We have been trained on how to run a cooperative and, currently, we have saved K2.8 million to invest in our 294 hectares of land,” said Kholophethe.

After interacting with farmers at Kambadwe Cooperative, the minister visited Nkhate Irrigation Scheme and interacted with farmers under Nkhate Water Users Association and Nkhate Cooperative.
