By Vincent Gunde

The Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC) says it has been conducting price monitoring exercises on goods and services in the major cities and towns of the country to gather evidence of the violation of the Competition and Fair Trading Act through excessive price increases following the devaluation of the local currency by 44 percent on November 7, 2023.

CFTC says while it is obvious that any devaluation of the currency may trigger an upward adjustment goods or services prices, the organization has noted that some of the price increments are aimed at using the devaluation as a scapegoat to exploit consumers.

Lloyd Vincent Nkhoma

In a statement dated November 22, 2023 signed by its Executive Director (ED)Lloyd Vincent Nkhoma, the CFTC has warned suppliers that any supplier of goods and services found to be engaging in excessive pricing contrary to the CFTC Act, it will not hesitate to issue relevant penalties and sanctions for such conduct.

The commission Says it approached 19 manufacturers and suppliers of products and services to explain the rationale behind such high price adjustments and also engaged the relevant regulators on the same saying it is now expanding the price monitoring exercise to the districts and rural trading centres of the country to establish and gather evidence of possible violations of the CFTC Act.

“The CFTC is encouraging consumers and the general public to report any suspected violation of the CFTA through toll free line 2489 or send a WhatsApp message to 0987738749,” reads the statement in part.

Giving his reaction, a Malawi Congress Party (MCP) diehard for Mvera area in Dowa Rodgers Kamphangala, has accused government of not consulting the citizens to be alert on the devaluation of the Malawi Kwacha by 44 percent describing this as a big margin which has never happened in the country’s history.

Kamphangala said it is sad that President Chakwera and his Vice Saulos Chilima promised Malawians of servant leadership, and that he was expecting that the two leaders would be coming to the citizens to seek their views on matters of national importance but the opposite is happening.

He said even though the Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC) is monitoring prices in cities, towns, districts and rural trading centres, this will not stop price adjustments to goods and services.

The MCP diehard has however, advised government to reduce levies on fuel observing that this is the only way for prices of commodities to be reduced but if this is left as it is, Malawians should bless for tougher times, Government do run stores, prices will go up beyond the reach of everyone in Malawi.

“Reduce fuel levies, all adjustments in price are basing on fuel increase, once the levies are reduced, prices of goods and services will be at least reasonable,”said Kamphangala

The Malawi National Football Team, the Flames Head Coach, Patrick Mabedi has turned down allegations that the team is struggling to score upfront due to the absence of Moroka Swallows forward Frank ‘Gabadinho’ Mhango.

Mabedi was speaking this after Malawi went down 1-0 to Tunisia in the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers at the Bingu National Stadium(BNS) in Lilongwe on Tuesday.

Patrick Mabedi

Said the Flames coach:”Football is a game of 11 players. The absence of one player is not an excuse. We have played eight games without the mentioned player, performing well. It is essential to groom replacements for the future.”

He expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance, emphasizing the valuable experience gained for future endeavors.

Mabedi refused to accommodate Mhango after he reportedly missed his flight to Liberia, describing the incident as a sign of indiscipline.

Tunisia’s coach, Jalal Qaderi, commended the resilience of the Malawi Team, acknowledging their offensive prowess while attributing their victory to tactical superiority and experience.

“We knew it was a challenging match, respecting the offensive Malawi Team.

“However, our tactical prowess and concentration prevailed. Experience played a crucial role in securing the win,” stated Qaderi.

It was a match that the visitors enjoyed much ball possession in the entire regulation time, but the resilient youthful Flames gave them a tough ride only to concede a goal in the 87th minute.

Their goal came from a penalty after Flames defender, Lawrence Chaziya unleashed a dangerous and careless tackle on the advancing Tunisia’s striker, Sayfallah Ltaief.

Youssef Msakni sent Malawi’s goalkeeper, Brighton Munthali in the wrong direction.

It was too late for the hosts to equalize.

In his comment, Sports Journalist Edwin Mbewe stressed on the need for Mabedi to reconsider team selection, especially in the attacking department.

“The way we played today indicated the lack of a killer punch upfront.

“The current attackers have much to learn,” observed Mbewe.

The Flames are still in position 3 with 3 points in Group H while Tunisia leads with 6 points and are being followed closely by Equatorial Guinea.

They have the same points but with goal difference.

On June 3 2024, Malawi shall take on Sao Tome and Principe in the ongoing qualifiers.

Nankhumwa’s request for President Chakwera to appear in Parliament given a deaf ear

President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has snubbed a direct request from the Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Kondwani Nankhumwa, to appear in the August House to respond to two motions.

Last week, Nankhumwa wrote President Chakwera to respond to the scarcity of maize, fertilizer, and acute forex shortages.

In the other motion, the opposition leader demanded that Chakwera give reasons for his government’s insistence on using the national identity card as the only document to register in the voter’s roll amidst the challenges facing the exercise.

Nankhumwa

But in a brief statement, presidential press secretary Anthony Kasunda says the president cannot meddle in legislative affairs.

“The two motions were defeated, and the President cannot impose himself on Parliament.

“When there is a consensus, the President gets communication from the office of the Speaker,” said Kasunda.

Commenting on the matter, political analyst and the lecturer at the University of Malawi Ernest Thindwa also trashed Nankhumwa’s request saying there is no need for the President to face Parliament.

Thindwa observed that Chakwera has demonstrated boldness and commitment to the rule of law in facing Parliament.

He said: “As Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Nankhumwa’s demands are understandable, but politics aside, one would contend that issues for which he wanted the response from the President have been ably addressed by appropriate ministers, rendering Chakwera’s appearance before legislators inconsequential.”

The symposium which kick started yesterday, is part oft the ACB’s 25th anniversary celebration.

The event has drawn together ACB Chiefs from various countries in the SADC region and local and international Civil Society Organisations CSO’s dealing in accountability issues.
