Minister of Information and Digitalisation, Moses Kunkuyu, has applauded DMI St. John the Baptist University for its ‘ICT Skills for All’ project which is building human capacity through training as well as promoting the countries National ICT Policy.

Kunkuyu

Kunkuyu emphasised the need for ICT training as one way of transforming the economy and driving the digitalisation agenda of the country which will help Malawi align with other countries at a time when the world is going digital.

“What DMI has done is very commendable as it has complemented government efforts by partnering with the government to train those in the civil service and those who have just attained their MSCE certificates,
We believe the skills the graduates have acquired will be put to good use such as running businesses, developing content, engaging in e-commerce as well as promoting their workplace and given responsibilities,” he said.

The Minister further encouraged the graduates to display employability and promotable behaviour through their performance while making sure that they remain productive so that the country can benefit from their skills.

Addressing the 370 enthusiastic ICT graduates, Deputy Vice Chancellor responsible for academic affairs within DMI University, Dr. Benedicto Malunga emphasised on the need to include everyone in ending the digital divide which he says has greatly impacted the way of life.

“ICT is now an integral part of life, we therefore cannot afford to leave anyone behind but make sure we move together,
The program from which these graduands are graduating from was established to address the national gaps in the utilisation of ICT in Malawi since ICT is one of the transformational drivers of the economy,” said Dr. Malunga.

Member of Parliament (MP) for Neno North, Thoko Tembo has appealed to well-wishers to help Neno district Council with resources, as the council is constructing a house for a fire victim, Mwandida Kabitchi.

Kabitchi’s house was set ablaze on 15th August, 2023 by children who were playing at the house and lost everything in the process.

Speaking Wednesday at Wilson 2 Village in the area of Traditional Authority Chekucheku when he donated assorted items including bags of cement towards the construction of the house, Tembo said the house needs more resources for it to be completed.

“I appeal to well-wishers to continue making donations for the completion of the house. The council is banking on support from well-wishers in the construction project as such they need to be supported,” Tembo said.

The MP said the house construction has stalled for two days now as the project has run out of sand and cement.

The legislator said he thought of making the donation to complement other well-wishers who have already started making donations so that the life of Kabitchi should return to normal as it was before the accident.

Chairperson for Chekucheku Area Civil Protection Committee Sydney Menyani thanked the MP for the donation and appealed for more well-wishers saying a permanent solution for Kabitchi is a house.

The donated items include cement, blankets, soap, sugar and clothes.

Mighty Mukuru Wanderers has failed to dislodge Chitipa United at the summit of the TNM Super League log table as they came from behind to draw 1-all against Kamuzu Barracks in a midweek fixture at Kamuzu Stadium.

A win at Kamuzu Stadium would have taken the Lali-Lubani boys to the top above Chitipa and second placed FCB Nyasa Big Bullets.

Olson Kanjira scored for the visitors in the first half but Lawrence Chaziya equalized for the Nomads in the second half.

In another midweek fixture, Silver Strikers returned to winning ways as they smashed Moyale Barracks 4-1 at Bingu National Stadium (BNS) in Lilongwe.

Gustin Simkonda put the soldiers ahead just five minutes into the game but the Central Bankers equalized through Innocent Shema in the 31st minute from the penalty spot.

The other goals for Silver Strikers came from Patrick Macheso and Chinsinsi Maonga who scored a brace.

Elsewhere, a lone goal by Samuel Adeyemi was enough to give Rumphi United maximum points as they beat bottom placed Extreme FC 1-nil at Rumphi Stadium.

Chitipa United remain top on the log table with 39 points after playing 21 games followed by FCB Nyasa Big Bullets who have accumulated 37 points from 18 games, level with Wanderers who have played 20 games but the People’s team have a superior goal difference.

Extreme FC, Red Lions and Moyale Barracks are at the bottom of the log table.

In defence of President Chakwera’s attendance at the UN General Assembly

By Chikumbutso Mtumodzi, Dowa

President of the Republic of Malawi, His Excellency Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera’s presence at the 2023 UN General Assembly (UNGA78) in New York, which is slated for September 18 to 26, 2022, should be seen as a strategic move that can potentially benefit Malawi in various ways.

Many political and economic pundits have expressed their varied opinions about whether or not our beloved Head of State should attend this annual gathering of world leaders. My interest is in some Malawians’ argument that the country’s economic hardships should take precedence over international engagements.

I agree. However, it is equally imperative to consider the long-term advantages and opportunities that can arise from such high-level diplomatic participation.

Chakwera at UNGA

Here are some of my personal views:

1. International Cooperation and Partnerships: The United Nations General Assembly provides a unique platform for world leaders to engage in dialogue, foster cooperation, and build partnerships with other nations. By attending this global gathering, our President Chakwera has the opportunity to establish connections with leaders from around the world, including those from countries that could potentially offer assistance or investment in Malawi’s development projects. These partnerships can lead to increased foreign direct investment, technology transfer, and knowledge sharing, which are crucial for economic growth and development.

2. Promotion of Malawi’s Interests: I have had the privilege of attending UNGA before and I am well aware that the UN General Assembly serves as a forum where countries can advocate for their national interests and influence global decision-making processes. President Chakwera’s presence in New York will provide him with the opportunity to represent our beautiful country on an international stage, ensuring that the country’s concerns and priorities are heard by the global community. This can be particularly valuable for a developing nation like Malawi, as it provides an opportunity to address issues such as climate change, poverty alleviation, healthcare, education, and human rights at a global level.

3. Access to International Funding and Support: I am also hugely aware that UNGA brings together representatives from various international organizations, including financial institutions and donor agencies. By attending this event, President Chakwera can engage with these entities and explore avenues for securing financial assistance or grants for development projects in Malawi. This is especially important considering the economic hardships faced by the country. Building relationships with potential donors and showcasing Malawi’s commitment to development can increase the chances of receiving financial support, which can be instrumental in addressing pressing issues and driving economic progress.

It is crucial to note that President Chakwera’s attendance at the UN General Assembly does not imply a disregard for the economic challenges faced by Malawi. Rather, it demonstrates a proactive approach to finding solutions and opportunities on a global scale. The potential benefits of this trip, including international cooperation, partnerships, promotion of national interests, and access to funding, outweigh the short-term concerns of austerity measures.

In conclusion, President Chakwera’s participation in the UN General Assembly should be seen as an investment in Malawi’s future. By engaging with world leaders, advocating for national interests, and exploring avenues for international support, the President has the potential to pave the way for economic growth and development in Malawi.
