President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has reaffirmed his administration’s firm commitment to two major infrastructure projects: the construction of the long-awaited Lilongwe District Hospital and a new university within the district.

The President made this announcement on Tuesday during a campaign stop at Four-Ways Trading Centre in the Lilongwe Kumachenga Constituency, under Traditional Authority Njewa. He addressed the community directly, highlighting a significant gap in local healthcare services.

President Chakwera explicitly noted that Lilongwe, as a district, currently lacks its own district hospital. He revealed that plans are already advancing, with land identified for a modern medical facility.

The operationalization of this new hospital is positioned as a strategic solution to alleviate the severe patient congestion currently burdening Kamuzu Central Hospital and Bwaila Hospital, thereby improving healthcare access for the entire region.

In the same address, the President turned to education, outlining his government’s parallel commitment to constructing a new university. He stressed that boosting education is fundamental to national progress, asserting that only a well-educated population can meaningfully contribute to and drive the country’s development agenda.

Earlier during the event, aspiring Member of Parliament for Lilongwe Kumachenga Constituency, Marko Ching’onga, expressed his gratitude to the government for the various infrastructure developments already underway in the area, setting a positive context for the new promises.

President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has issued a strong condemnation against business entities engaged in hoarding goods, labeling the practice a primary driver behind the critical shortages of essential commodities and the alarming rise in prices across the country.

The President delivered his remarks on Tuesday at Mpingu Trading Centre in the area of Traditional Authority M’bwatalika, where he addressed a crowd as part of his ongoing campaign trail. He demanded an immediate cessation of this activity, framing it not just as an economic issue but as a profound moral failing, and stressed the urgent need for greater patriotism and love for one another among all Malawians.

The President lamented the severe and punitive effects of hoarding, noting that its consequences are felt most acutely within rural communities. In these areas, he explained, the artificial inflation of prices for basic goods leaves citizens with desperately few alternatives, effectively holding them hostage to unscrupulous market forces.

In a related address on national development, Chakwera also condemned the widespread implementation of substandard construction projects in various districts, describing the practice as entirely counterproductive to the nation’s progress. He reaffirmed his government’s determination to build durable infrastructure that would serve communities for years to come and issued a direct instruction to all District Commissioners to personally inspect projects within their jurisdictions to ensure strict adherence to agreed-upon quality and standards.

Adding to the day’s discourse, aspiring Member of Parliament and Minister of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare, Jean Sendeza, expressed her gratitude to President Chakwera for his commitment to gender equality. She specifically thanked him for appointing a significant number of women to key decision-making positions within his administration.

Furthermore, Minister Sendeza commended the government for its transformative National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF) loan initiative, highlighting its substantial positive impact on empowering countless Malawians, with particular benefits for the nation’s youth and women.

Expressing his satisfaction, Chakwera acknowledged the long history of suffering endured by persons with albinism but affirmed that such persecution is being decisively confronted under his leadership. He announced the ongoing construction of similar secure houses across the nation as a tangible sign of this changed reality.

The President further called upon all Malawians to act as protectors of people with any form of disability, fostering a national culture of inclusion and safety. The impact of the initiative was underscored by Getrude Ulaya, a recipient from Tembwe, who confirmed that the houses provide them with much-needed security. The Mchinji project currently comprises three such units, each equipped with reinforced steel doors for enhanced protection.

Aspiring Member of Parliament for Mchinji South West Constituency, Deus Gumba, highlighted that this effort is part of a broader wave of development, including the construction of essential bridges and roads and new police houses to improve overall infrastructure and security in the river-rich area.

Speaking to a large crowd at Waliranji Trading Centre during whistle-stop rallies in Lilongwe and Mchinji, the President stated that he is aware of forces working to frustrate his plans. He declared his intention to stay ahead of them, assuring the public of his commitment to ensuring development reaches all parts of Malawi.

While describing Mchinji as the nation’s breadbasket, the President acknowledged that the district itself has been left behind in development, a situation his administration is committed to rectifying.
