Machinga rated best performing district in Covid-19 vaccine uptake in Malawi

United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund(
UNICEF) and
United States Agency for International Development (USAID) findings have rated Machinga as Malawi’s Best Performing district in Covid-19 vaccine uptake with 75 percent.

Speaking during a stakeholders meeting in Machinga on Tuesday, the district hospital’s Chief Preventive and Health Officer, Alfred Phiri described the achievement as a milestone.

Phiri attributed the success story to traditional leaders’ efforts during the Covid-19 vaccine uptake campaigns.

He then challenged authorities in the district to put an extra gear in order to achieve 100 percent Covid-19 vaccine uptake.

On his part, Traditional Authority(T/A) Mizinga, who was  named as the best T/A during the meeting, said the achievement was due to good coordination between chiefs, the district hospital, district council and the youth.

Malawi declared a state of national disaster due to the COVID-19 pandemic on  March 20, 2020 and registered its first confirmed coronavirus case on April 2, 2020.

Cumulatively, Machinga district recorded 1025 Covid-19 cases and 45 deaths.

Mangochi’s Mikoko ward councillor Adam Chinyangala laid to rest

The body of Mangochi ward councillor Adam Umar Chinyangala was laid to rest yesterday, Tuesday, June 4,2024, at Piyasi Village, in the area of Senior Chief Chowe in the district.

Chinyangala, 43, who until his death was a United Democratic Front (UDF) councillor for Mikongo Ward in Mangochi North East constituency died on Monday evening in a road accident after the motorcycle he was riding collided with another motorcycle near National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) grain silos along the Bakili Muluzi Highway.



Speaking during the funeral, Director of Planning and Policy in Ministry of Local Government, Unity and Culture, Walusungu Kaira described Chinyangala’s passing as a loss to the ministry, saying he will be remembered as a hard working person who was development conscious.

“It is very heart-breaking to note that our friend who wanted to see the district develop has left us,” said Kaira.

In his eulogy, Mangochi District Council, Chairperson, Hassan Chikuta said that the council has lost a person who had the passion to transform his area as well as the district.

“As a council, we are saddened with the death of our brother, councillor Chinyangala. He was available anytime the council wanted him,” said Chikuta.

In his remarks, UDF, Publicity Secretary, Ken Ndanga who spoke on behalf of the party president Lillian Patel, expressed sadness over the death of Councilor Chinyangala, saying the party has lost a loyal and devoted member.

“Late Chinyangala was devoted to the party. We will remember him as a loving and caring person who loved everyone despite his or her political party and religion,” said Ndagha.

People that attended Chinyangala’s funeral included; President of UDF Lillian Patel, Mangochi North East Constituency Member of Parliament, Idi Kalosi, Mangochi District Commssioner, Dr. Smart Gwedemula, Mangochi Municipal Council, Chief Executive Officer, Ernest Kadzokoya, Senior Chief Chowe and other chiefs as well as ward councilors.

Born in 1981, late Chinyangala is survived with two wives and five children.

He was elected a councillor on UDF ticket for Mikongo Ward in 2019.

Hillary Chilomba takes over as ACB Acting Director General

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Deputy Director General (DDG) Hillary Chilomba is now the bureau’s Acting Director General (ADG) following the expiry of Martha Chizuma’s contract on May 31, 2024.

In a statement, ACB Principal Public Relations Officer Egrita Ndala says Chilomba’s appointment is in accordance with section 8 of the Corruption Practices Act.

“The ACB appreciates and values the great work and commitment shown by the former Director General Ms. Martha Chizuma in leading Malawians in the fight against corruption,” says Ndala in a statement.

She has therefore, asked all stakeholders to give the acting director general all the necessary support.

Chizuma was appointed ACB DG in 2021 by President Dr.Lazarus Chakwera.

It is on record that Chizuma did not seek renewal of her contract, citing a need for rest.

Some commentators describe Chizuma as a dedicated ACB DG, but they claim that political interference affected her commitment, leading her not to seek contract renewal.

First ever Korea-Africa summit starts with Chilima in attendance

The First ever Korea-Africa summit has started in Seoul-in Republic of Korea with a call for Korea and African countries to be committed to finding ways of expanding economic ties and cooperation in supply chain and development with the resource-rich countries.

President of the Republic of Korea, Yoon Suk Yeol, made the call on Tuesday during the official opening of a two-day Korea-Africa Summit currently underway in the country.

Chilima among the dignatories

Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima is among the Heads of State and Government including business people from across Africa with high expectations that the summit will increase various opportunities ranging from Trade, Agriculture, and tourism among others.

President Yoon Suk Yeol said South Korea aims to expand trade and investment with Africa through a series of agreements, such as Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) and Trade and Investment Promotion Frameworks (TIPFs).

He also vowed to support Africa’s efforts toward regional economic integration through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), launched in 2019.

“In terms of trade, we will speed up the signing of EPAs and TIPFs. On the investment front, we will expand investment protection agreements to promote exchanges between the two countries’ companies,” Yoon said in his opening address.

The summit has drawn together about 48 African countries such as Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Lesotho, Ivory Coast, Mauritius, Zimbabwe, Togo, Rwanda, Mozambique, Sao Tome and Principe, Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde, among others.

The summit is being held under the theme: The Future We Make Together: Shared Growth, Sustainability, and Solidarity.

Vitumbiko Gubuduza appointed NAM interim president

Vitumbiko Gubuduza has been appointed the new Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) interim-President with immediate.

The former Civonets Netball Club shooter and Blantyre and Districts Netball League (BDNL) chairperson will lead the association for a year with the support of interim general secretary Yamikani Kauma, treasurer Cecilia Mtukule-Bondwe and committee members Tamara Fweta, Fernando Ligola, Justice Katika and Margret Maluwa.

Vitumbiko Gubuduza

The interim committee was appointed during a round table discussion the Malawi National Council of Sport(MNCS) conducted with NAM regional and district committee chairpersons on Monday at Kamuzu Institute for Sports in Lilongwe following the resignation of the Abigail Sharif-led executive committee a few days ago.

In an interview with 247 Malawi News Editor Chisomo Phiri, Gubuduza said her committee will strive to unify the netball fraternity and make the sport a winning brand.

Gubuduza is a lawyer, who works as NBS Bank head of compliance.

NAM is the governing body of netball in Malawi.
