Lilongwe Police recently made headlines after arresting two notorious mwandikumbukira tricksters in the city.
Mike Thawale, 38, and James Magaleta, 33, were apprehended by the Station’s detectives while attempting to rob unsuspecting victims at Select and Save shops along Kamuzu Procession road.
The suspects, known for their deceptive tactics, would approach people with the phrase “mwandikumbukira” to gain their trust before swindling them out of their money.
They would then proceed to switch the victim’s cash with fake banknotes under the guise of helping them make cheaper purchases.
This scam has been their modus operandi since 2020 and 2008, respectively.
Thawale, hailing from Lipoche Village in Zomba, and Magaleta, from Chipologa Village in Machinga District, have a history of similar offenses.
Despite being convicted multiple times in the past, they were only given suspended sentences and ordered to repay the stolen funds to their victims.
The diligent work of the station’s detectives led to the apprehension of these habitual tricksters, who will now face charges of theft in court.
Their arrest serves as a warning to others who engage in such fraudulent activities, highlighting the importance of vigilance and awareness when dealing with strangers.
The case of Thawale and Magaleta sheds light on the prevalence of scams and the vulnerability of individuals to falling victim to cunning criminals.
It also underscores the role of law enforcement in cracking down on such illicit activities and ensuring that justice is served.
