President Chakwera says AIP has helped to end hunger

By Kondanani Chilimunthaka

President Lazarus Chakwera has once again said achievement of food security for every household in Malawi remains one of the three top priorities of his administration, saying the country can not afford to be a begging nation for food.

Speaking at Kavidebwere Primary School ground in the area of TA Kaluluma in Kasungu North, President Chakwera said his administration want Malawi not to be a begging nation, but self-reliant and a food basket for other nations.

President Chakwera

“What we want to achieve is food security that promotes self-reliance, what we want to achieve is food security that upholds human dignity, what we want to achieve is food security that protects our national sovereignty, what we want to achieve is food security that builds our people’s capacity for economic prosperity.

This is why the Affordable Inputs Programme exists, this is why we look for ways to improve the programme’s delivery year after years. It is undisputed that for four years running now, the AIP has achieved food security for more Malawians than any programme like it in the past. So I am happy to yet again roll-out the AIP to empower millions of Malawians to grow their own food” Said President Chakwera.

However, President Chakwera told the nation that AIP is not meant for everyone as not all Malawians are for food production and will benefit from Social Cash Transfer, while others are engaged in commercial farming which is targeted through AGCOM with support from the World Bank.

But President Chakwera has directed that the Ministry of Agriculture should make sure the programme is finished within a period of 40 days from the date of its official launch.

Meanwhile, President Chakwera has encouraged Malawian farmers to venture into wheat production which has demonstrated to be viable cash crop through the four piloted varieties at Mpale Wheat Farm in Dowa whose demand is huge across the global.

In his remarks, Minister of Agriculture, Sam Kawale said the K109 billion programme is set to benefit 1.5 million households across Malawi at K15,000 per bag of fertilizer and a goat.

“You directed our Ministry, that those who will not benefit from the AIP have to benefit from other programmes. Therefore over 291,000 Malawians will benefit from Social Cash Transfer, others over 435,000 will be on Public Works programme to improve their livelihood, and we have over 75,000 people to benefit through AGCOM, and soon we will roll-out AGCOM2 project which has received assistance from the World Bank of over K265 billion and will benefit over 225,000 Malawians. This means over 1 million other Malawians will benefit from other programmes apart from the AIP beneficiaries” Added Kawale.

In his speech, Kawale told the nation that 73 percent of the AIP 2023-24 consignment is already in the country ready for redemption.

Speaking earlier, Member of Parliament for Kasungu North, Mike Bango commended President Chakwera for launching this year’s AIP in his constituency, saying his area is committed to register another success after being on record for being the constituency where inputs were highly redeemed in the last season.

Bango also commended President Chakwera for directing that this year farmers should redeem a bag of fertilizer at K15,000, the same price a bag of fertilizer was being sold last season under the programme.

He said many artists and musicians have join secret societies for they don’t know that they are singing through darkness to those who gave them gifts that if they say ‘’NO” they are being killed mysteriously afraid of revealing their secrets.

The late Chibade

Speaking through an audio clip circulating in various social media platforms, Ben Longwe has advised musicians not to involve themselves with people who are part and parcel of things of the darkness to save them from being eliminated through poisoning.

Longwe has appealed to upcoming musicians to be careful with well known musicians wanting them to share the stage with them claiming that some had hidden agendas for one to join secret societies advising them to work very hard and not rushing to quick riches.

He has warned musicians to see who is inviting them to share the stage and if given a special chair, why being given that chair advising them not to be excited with the chair given, they will be escorted to the grave leaving behind their blessed music outside.
“If called to attend a meeting, don’t allow yourself to be given a special chair reserved for you, sit with the public,” said Longwe.

Malawi Investment Trade Centre (MITC) says the trade sector in the country is struggling due to unsustainability of its export deals.

Chief Executive Officer at MITC Paul Kwengwere made the remarks in Lilongwe during the 2023 senstization workshop for the up-coming Inter- Africa Trade fair to be held in Cairo, Egypt next month.

Kwengwere said as a country there is a need for citizens to be producing more exports in order to meet the expected demand outside the country.

“Most of the times we found that we click a deal but we are not able to sustain the supply, what we are doing is to work with the ministry of Agriculture, in this case I can also bring in the concept of mega farms which will also going to improve productivity, we are hoping that with more people participating in mega farms we will increase our production that will really help to make sure that anyone that has got a contract out there should make sure that is able to make supplies effectively.

“We usually tend to have an advantage after the rainy season when we have just harvested, but then in this particular case with the mega farms we have two times production because of the heavy equipment that might come in with availability of mega farms,” he highlighted.

Kwengwere added that the up-coming Inter- Africa Trade Fair will have positive yields as business people will be able to seal potential deals that will enable them to sustainably export more.

“Most of the time what matters most is good preparation, we have placed in good pavilions, we have got a private sector which is going there with good quality products, and I don’t have any doubt that we are going to click some deals,” he said.

In her remarks, principal sectary in the ministry of trade and industry Christina Zakeyu who was representing the Minister of Trade, said the initiative of coming up with mega farms in the country is one of the things that will ensure sustainability of export deals in the country.

“The Malawi Investment Trade Centre and Export Development Fund they have been mobilizing public sector participation in this event and over 30 participants have confirmed to take part in this event. So this meeting today is very crucial as we share more information about the up coming event because this event does not involve only Malawi but we are also looking at other 55 countries that will also participate in the event, so as a county, so we have a comparative advantage as with the up coming mega farms we will be producing more and we have to look for markets and not only that but also this Inter- Africa Trade Fair gives opportunities for countries like Malawi to work with investors that can be able to invest in different sectors.

“So many sectors have to take part in this Inter- Africa Trade Fair because these investors will be there to see who they can talk to and see where they can find their way and we believe that Malawi is a right destination for these investors to come and invest,” she highlighted.

The workshop was organized by the Ministry of Trade and Industry in conjunction with Malawi Investment Trade Centre and Export Development Fund and was held under the theme; “Unlocking Opportunities for Malawi”.

It also involved different business players and investors.

This year’s inter-Africa Trade Fair is slated to take place from 9th to 15th November, 2023 in Cairo, Egypt where 52 African countries are expected to showcase their investments.
