Music followers not happy with BAF festival organisers as Jay Jay Cee postpones show to pave way for BAF

By Staff Reporter

Malawians have expressed disappointment with the organisers of the Blantyre Arts Festival (BAF) for organizing a free entertainment event on the same day when musician Jay Jay Cee was planning to launch his latest album titled “Pamodzi”.

Jay Jay Cee announced his album launch in June this year and has been working hard to have a successful launch which was slated to take place at Robins Park on October 7, 2023.

With just afew days to the day, BAF organizers announced that they will have a free show at Kamuzu Upper Stadium, just about a kilometer from Robins Park where Jay Jay Cee’s album launch was supposed to take place.

Among music artist to perform at BAF festival include; Skeffa Chimoto Taygrin and Driemo who was also booked for Jay Jay Cee’s album launch.

The development has forced the musician, real names Juma James Chitsonga, to postpone his show fearing that it would be less patronized.

The album launch has since been rescheduled to November 4, 2023 at the same venue, Robin Park.

This has irked some music followers who are claiming that the BAF festival organisers have done that to frustrate Jay Jay Cee’s efforts.

One of the people who have spoken on the issue is music promoter and business man Kelvin Silugwe.

Silugwe said he was not happy with what BAF organizers have done and has pledged his support to Jay Jay Cee on his album launch in November.

“I know everyone is calling him humble and wise for postponing his show to give them mpata awa abwera dzanawa, koma lets face it, the financial and psychological damage to Jay Jay Cee is just too much. Comon, you can’t just wake up to frustrate young talents just because you can and uli ndi kuthekera.”

“We stand with Jay Jay Cee and for this reason, we will support his new date, financially and physically. We will make sure he holds a very successful album launch. To the organizers of the free show, mwamulakwira mwana, koma poti ndinu akulu akulu, with connections and financial support from donors, have it your way.” Said Silugwe

Musician Kellie Divine Njuchi said she was saddened with the development saying it will cost the artist a lot as he has been working hard to have a successful launch without the help of the corporate world.

She said, “This is very sad and heart breaking. .. guy has been working daily up and down.”

Another musician Smacks Kayira who has just come out from hibernation with his brand new song ‘Ndani?’, believes despite what BAF organizers have done, Jay Jay Cee’s album launch will be a success.

“Very unfortunate how the industry is so biased. He really tried his best with all his effort but just last minute all this happens. But all in all his hardworking spirit will pay out. 4th November all road to Robins Park,” he said.

One music fan on social media only identified by the name ‘Achimwene Aakulu’ wrote, “Some people are just heartless, they don’t care about others.”

Another person on Facebook, Ambrohillary Msichi had no kind words for the BAF festival organisers.

” I had no intention to attend his show buh because of this primitive development, I hereby to confirm that I will attend this show ndi amzanga ena 15.”

Richard Mukuru Jnr, a music fanatic from Zambia also had his share on the development. He wrote on Facebook, “I feel sorry for this lad he don’t deserve this, he has been so supportive to the fellow artists mmhh. Jay Jay Cee is one of the humble artists I know from Malawi. Go lad God is on your side. Sending love from Zambia.”

Some of the artists expected to perform at Jay Jay Cee’s album launch include Eli Njuchi, Driemo, Sangie, Wikise, Gibo Pearson, Nepman, Chizmo, Rita, Hilco, Kellie Divine Njuchi and Nesnes

President Lazarus Chakwera has said throughout all the three eras of Malawi’s history, late Right Honorable John Tembo proved himself to be a statesman who showed his prowess and dexterity in public service, both as head of multiple public institutions and ministries across multiple sectors, and as the longest serving Legislator in Malawi’s history.

Chakwera made the remarks at Bingu International Convention Center-Malawi Square on Tuesday, 3rd October, 2023 as he led the nation in sending-off the body of the late John Tembo who was his predecessor in MCP, Malawi’s first Minister of Finance, and the longest serving Member of Parliament.

President Chakwera and The First Lady

“His political ingenuity and leadership, his ability to navigate the changing waters and terrain of Malawi’s political transitions was simply incomparable. His personal relationships, his commitment to the family, his children, his friends, his allies, and his followers, manifest his greatness.

There was no-one, John Tembo did not treat with respect, dignity, and civility. But I think it is safe to say that Right Honorable John Tembo has left behind a nation of grateful hearts for his selfless service to this country” Said the President in his eulogy.

As a leader who served in all the country’s three eras, late Tembo has been described as one who did not compromise on his allegiance to Malawi Congress Party even when it went out of government in 1994, but made the national shape and form through his active and substantial contributions.

Additionally, President Chakwera told the nation that over nine decades of his life, Tembo lived front-row seats in the journey the country embarked towards independence, self-determination, and pluralism.

“As such we have had the distinguish honor at the end of the day, of having someone in our midst, who was a great national institution by any stretch of the imagination. A man whose very life will forever be a library, an archive of our nation’s history” Added Malawi leader.

Having served in various portfolios including being the first chairman for University Council of Malawi, Leader of Opposition, and Member of Parliament for Dedza South Constituency, Tembo died on 27th September in Lilongwe and will be laid to rest on Wednesday, 4th October, 2023 at his home in Dedza District.

DPP says Mutharika still eligible for re-election

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) says the 83-year-old party’s President Peter Mutharika is not disqualified from contesting for re-election under the DPP constitution.

This follows arguments by DPP Vice President for the South Kondwani Nankhumwa, in a court challenging, that the endorsement of Mutharika at National Governing Council (NGC) meeting held recently in Mangochi were a sham, as they were being made for someone who already served two terms.

But in a statement signed by the spokesperson Shadric Namalomba, the party insists Nankhumwa’s claims saying Mutharika is still eligible for re-election in the party.

Mutharika

“According to the DPP constitution, Mutharika is still eligible for re-election in the party no matter how long he has served in the party,”says Namalomba.

Currently, it is not known whether the party will comply with a court order pronounced on Friday last week, which ordered the DPP to hold an elective conference and a properly constituted NGC meeting within 90 days.

The order by High Court Judge Simeon Mdeza also directed that all candidates who are eligible under the party’s constitution must contest for positions at the convention.

Since the DPP was shoveled out of government in 2020, there has been power scramble by leaders within the party.

A magistrate court in Blantyre has issued yet another warrant of arrest against on the run and wanted businessman Mohamed Shabir Salim Jussab for allegedly obtaining a BMW car worth K26 million by false pretence.

The offence is contrary to section 319 (1) of Penal Code.

Shabir, on Interpol Red Alert and also with another warrant of arrest hanging on his head over cyber harassment crime and reportedly in Saudi Arabia, is this time around being accused of obtaining the BMW car by false pretence.

Mohamed Shabir Salim Jussab

The car was brought to his garage at Makata in Blantyre but he never returned it to the owner.

The court, in a warrant of arrest dated 18th September 2023, has ordered police to arrest him and bring him before the court.

Police in Blantyre have also been hunting for businessman Humair Salim Mahomed Sidik Jussab, a young brother to Shabir, months after Chief Resident Magistrate Court in Blantyre issued a warrant of arrest against him over a ‘hot car’.

Humair, who is also wanted by Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA), is said to have lied to the tax-collecting body that he was a student returning to Malawi from South Africa to evade duty on a VW Amarok, double cab, which he registered as BZ 1382, in his name.

The car was discovered by an Interpol search which Malawi Police Service joined, and they relocated it at a garage in Blantyre.

Humair, who is also wanted by police with a warrant of arrest also hanging on his head for a number of criminal charges, will be answering to the charges by police relating to the ‘hot car’ and also to MRA for the duty evasion.

Sources both at police in Blantyre and MRA said the cases would move upon his arrest. He is reported to be outside Malawi.

The warrant of arrest issued against Humair requires investigators from Blantyre Police Station who applied for it to hunt the suspect and bring him before the court.

“This is to authorise and require you to enter into upon and arrest the said suspect, and if arrested, to take possession of the said suspect and produce the same forthwith before this court,” reads the warrant of arrest in part.

The warrant explains the offence is suspected to have occurred on December 15 2022 when the suspect brought the car into Malawi dishonestly.

On the other hand, police are also investigating Kauser Salim Jussab, a mother to Humair and Shabir, over another car also suspected to be hot.

Police, under Anti-Motor Car Theft Department based at South West Region Police, have been hunting for Kauser in connection to information they have that her Mercedes Benz, registration number HENN4 is a stolen car.

Our sources at South West Region Police disclosed that officers went to Fasa Factory in Mapanga at one point, owned by her family, looking for her and the car, but they did not find her and the car.

We have information that South African Police Services (SAPS) have been alerted to help hunt for Kauser Salim Jussab over the stolen can, as she was, reported to be in Durban.
