FAM President Emphasizes Importance of Coaches in Transforming Malawi Football

In the world of football, coaches play a crucial role in shaping the future of the game. Their knowledge, experience, and leadership can make or break a team’s success on the field. This sentiment was echoed by the President of the Football Association of Malawi (FAM), Fleetwood Haiya, during the opening of a two-day High Performance Football Analysis Course for Super League coaches.

Haiya emphasized the importance of coaches in transforming the game in Malawi. He highlighted the need for continuous education and embracing technology in analyzing the game to make the Super League more competitive and to strengthen the national team. By providing the coaches with tools and resources to improve their skills, Haiya believes that Malawian football can reach new heights.

This sentiment was echoed by the President of the Football Association of Malawi (FAM), Fleetwood Haiya, during the opening of a two-day High Performance Football Analysis Course for Super League coaches.

The Chairperson of the National Football Coaches Association of Malawi, Aubrey Nankhuni, expressed gratitude to the FAM President for organizing the course. He recognized the potential impact that such training could have on the country’s football landscape, emphasizing the need for continuous improvement and development in coaching standards.

Among the coaches attending the course are some well-known names in Malawian football. The Flames Coach, Patrick Mabedi Nyasa, is among those present, as well as Heston Munthali, Assistant Coach of Big Bullets, Leo Mpulula of the Tigers, Meke Mwase, Assistant Coach of the Mighty Mukuru Wanderers, and Peter Mponda, Head Coach of Silver Strikers.

The course aims to enhance the coaching skills of these individuals, giving them the tools and knowledge needed to excel in their roles. Through sessions focused on high performance analysis, the coaches will learn how to dissect the game, identify strengths and weaknesses, and make strategic decisions to improve team performance.

In a country where football is a source of pride and passion for many, the role of coaches cannot be understated. They are the driving force behind a team’s success, guiding players to reach their full potential and achieve their goals. President Chakwera reach out to 4.3Mn hungry households

Minister of Information and Digitalization, Moses Kunkuyu, says President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera Government has reached out to 4.3 million people affected by hunger in the 2023/2024 season with maize aid and money.

Addressing the press conference in Lilongwe, Kunkuyu says more than 3 Million people have received maize and 173, 000 recipients have received K150, 000 each.

Kunkuyu says  Government in the next three days will continue to distribute flour to the people through the Department of Disaster Management (DodMa) saying that no one will die of hunger in this country.

According to the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Report (MVAC), 4.4 million people are affected by hunger and the DODMA has been distributing food and money to the affected people.

Chakwera through his crisis arm ,  the Department of Disaster Management (DODa) will be rolling out the K20billion maize flour distribution exercise.

In an exclusive interview, DOdma says the exercise targets 1.8 households.

“As you are aware that we had purchased 30,000 tones of maize which have been milled to 23 ,000 metric tonnes of flour, ” says dodma officials.

According to Dodma  the exercise is targeting 10 districts which were already mentioned in the Malawi vulnerable assessment comittee (MVAC) report.

These districts targeted  include Lilongwe , Machinga , Mangochi, Mulanje , Mzimba, Thyolo, Dowa, Karonga, Ntchisi, and Chitipa.

MCP top brass preaches violence free campaign in Karonga by-elections

Some ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) heavyweights on Sunday invaded Karonga district canvassing support for their councillor candidates in three wards which Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) will be conducting by-elections on 26 March, 2024.

Among the top brass include Minister of Homeland Security, Zikhale Ng’oma, Minister of Youths and Sports, Uchizi Mkandawire, Kasungu Central legislator, Ken Kandodo and Karonga district MCP chairperson, Emmanuel Nkhoma.

Speaking to the gathering, Mkandawire who is also the party’s deputy regional governor for north north region asked the community to vote for MCP candidates in order eliminate the problems that they are facing.

According to Mkandawire, only MCP candidates can support President Lazarus Chakwera’s vision on the ground.

“You need to vote wisely. Vote for MCP candidates because they’re the ones who will be able to follow and support what the President of this country wants,” he pleaded.

He then asked all political parties that will participate in the race to conduct violence free campaign.

“I want to urge all MCP supporters to desist from any form of violence and focus on telling voters what the party and its candidates intend to do after voted into power,” he said.

Mkandawire said President Lazarus Chakwera as a servant leadership always fight for peace and unity.

He vowed that his party will sweep all seats.

On his part, Ng’oma said only MCP and Chakwera have good plans for Karonga residents therefore they should vote for their candidates.

Karonga district MCP chairperson, Emmanuel Nkhoma said under Chakwera, Karonga district has benefited a lot and in order to let this continue, the district must have more MCP representative at council level.

According him, some opposition councillors as well as MPs are fond of frustrating Chakwera’s vision on the ground in order to look as failure.

Nkhoma said such moves are delaying development projects as well as Chakwera’s vision on the ground.


MEC declared the three seats vacant after its councillors were convicted on corruption issues.

The three wards are Rukulu, Kaporo and Chilanga wards

NCHE hails NBS Bank partnership on digital payments

The National Council of Higher Education (NCHE) has hailed its partnership with listed NBS Bank on digital payments for students applying for public universities selection saying it will foster innovation while improving efficiencies in their processes.

NCHE Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. Ambumulire Phiri said the partnership will help simplify the application process.

“In our continuous efforts to enhance accessibility and convenience for prospective students, we are delighted to partner with NBS Bank again this year. This collaboration will boost the application process by enabling applicants to conveniently pay their application fees through the Bank,” said Phiri.

Phiri added that the partnership with NBS is one of NCHE’s ways of fostering innovation and efficiency in their processes.

“Our major aim is to facilitate easy and inclusive access to higher education for all eligible candidates and this is one way of ensuring that,” said Phiri.

The Banks Head of Corporate Banking, Frank Nakoma, said with the  partnership, the ‘Caring Bank’ anticipates more usage of digital banking platforms.

“As we all know, the world is moving towards a digital direction especially where payments are concerned. Customers usually use their cards to make online payments or pay for their goods through a point-of-sale machine in a shop. As one way of responding to an ever-evolving climate, NBS Bank has decided to partner with NCHE to ensure that students across the country can easily pay their application fees using the digital platforms we have dubbed ‘EazyBank’,” he said.

Nakoma further said the Bank believes that the process speaks to the Bank’s slogan of the ‘Caring Bank’ by providing convenient ways of transacting.

This is one of the other partnerships the Bank has made that require digital transactions.

NCHE, which harmonizes the selection of students into all public universities in the country, will this year start receiving these applications from February 19 to  March 19.

Tributes pour as Former Flames goalkeeper Charles Swini dies

Death has been announced of former Flames goalkeeper Charles Swini.

Reports indicate that Swini died on Tuesday morning at Kamuzu Central Hospital after battling Kidney problems for months

Born on 28th February 1982, Apart from playing for the Malawi National team, Swini also played for the defunct Escom United, Silver Strikers, H.B Songo FC in Mozambique and his very last club was Civil Service United in 2022.

Football fans have been quick to pay their tributes to the player who made a difference in Malawi football

His close friend Rodney Domingo told the media that the late Swini was rushed to the Kamuzu Central hospital yesterday after collapsing at his home where he died.

Swini was a member of the Flames squad of the 2010 Africa cup of nations and was a regular after the retirement of Swadick Sanudi.

Burial arrangements are not yet known.
