The outgoing Football Association of Malawi (FAM) President Walter Nyamilandu says he is happy to leave the stage in a better place than he found it.

Nyamilandu who had been FAM President for the past 19 years was defeated by Fleetwood Haiya in the FAM presidential elections held on December 16, 2023 in Mzuzu.

He was beaten by 23 votes to 13.

In his message to Malawians after the defeat, Nyamilandu said he will no longer seek for re-election at FAM as president as he has done his part and that others should do theirs.

“Today is my last day in serving the beautiful game of football in Malawi as President of FAM,”said Nyamilandu.

He thanked Malawians for granting him the rare opportunity to lead Malawi football.

Said Nyamilandu :” Thank you for your support and collaboration in moving football forward. We raised the bar by achieving significant milestones that brought joy and pride to our nation.

“However, at this juncture, it is time to move on and leave the legacy behind as well as bridging the gap mindset.

He then wished Haiya, the president elect and his Executive Committee all the best in their endeavors.

Nyamilandu claimed FAM Presidency victory in the 2004, 2007, 2011, 2015 and 2019 FAM General Elections.

He assured Malawi’s return to the African Cup of Nations continental tournament twice during his tenure as president.

Before taking up his role, Malawi had struggled to qualify for over 20 years.

Nyamilandu became the first Malawian in history and one of a few Africans to be elected onto the prestigious world football governing body, FIFA as an Executive Council member.

He beat the president of the South African Football Association in a series of voting rounds to attain the council seat.

He repeated history when he was voted into the continental sports governing body, CAF, in 2023.

Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has challenged security agencies in the country to take responsibility in upholding, protecting, and defending principles that form the foundation of national security.

Director of Finance at MACRA, Mphatso Phiri said the knowledge gained during the national security executive programme on cybersecurity transcends mere technical expertise as it reflects a shared commitment to the protection of digital assets and the security of the nation.

She was speaking on behalf of the Director General at MACRA, during the closing session of the national security executive programme on cybersecurity which has been held for the past two weeks in Lilongwe.

Phiri emphasized that in the world where virtual and tangible things are increasingly intertwined, the importance of the skills acquired cannot be overstated.

“Our cyberspace is not just a network of computers, it is the lifeline of our critical infrastructure, the guardian of sensitive information, and the battleground where the forces of good and ill converge.

“Your dedication to understanding and mastering the tools of cyber defense is a testament to your commitment to a safer, more secure future,”she said.

Conquering with MACRA, Brigadier General Professor Dan Kuwali from Malawi Defense Force (MDF) said completion of the programme is not an achievement, but that officers should utilize the knowledge gained in the programme.

“It is not what you learn that makes you educated, but what you remember after graduation and most importantly how you use that education and skills for the benefit of your country.

“Intellectual capital is the most potential tool in the knowledge economy. In a globalized world where states compete for influence and the threats to peace and security are complex and ever-evolving, knowledge has become the key economic resource and the dominant, perhaps even the only source of competitive advantage. This is why the motto of National Defense College (NDC) is knowledge coupled with wisdom is power,” Kuwali said.

The trainings where organized by National Defense College (NDC) with financial support from MACRA where 70 security officers from different security agencies in the country including immigration, Malawi Police Service l, Malawi Defense Force as well as National intelligence department have been eqquiped with knowledge in various security disciplines including cybersecurity national security, counter rencegency orientation course as well as conflict analysis and transformation.

District commissioner for chiradzulu district council, Francis Matewere, has urged World Vision International and other non-governmental organisations operating in the district to extend their projects period to ensure sustainability and that they reach many communities in the district.

Speaking over the weekend in Blantyre during stakeholder engagements, Matewere said the year ending 2023 has recorded a great transformation of people’s livelihood in the district as the results of non-governmental organisations activities.

“Government is overstretched with some other projects, therefore, non-governmental organisations have done a commendable job in the year to compliment government activities,” he said.

Among others, Matewere said the district has recorded tremendous reduction of child early marriages, school dropouts, child malnutrition, health related complications, food insecurity as well as water and sanitation cases.

“Just in one traditional authority, over 35 child marriages have been terminated and ensure that the children are back to school. The beneficiaries have also been fully supported,” said Matewere.

However, Matewere expressed disappointment with the tendency of some parents who were still perpetuating the child marriages in the district.

Commenting on the issue, World Vision International Malawi (WVI) director of operations, Charles Chimombo described child marriage issue as very complicated.

Chimombo said unless the driving factors such as illiteracy, poverty and cultural norms were fully addressed, the issue of child marriages could be the thing of the past.

“This issue calls for a multisectoral approach to be addressed. Other beneficiaries do return to marriages due to lack of support both at school or in their communities,” said Chimombo.

However, the director of operations said inadequate funding from donors and emergency issues such as cholera outbreaks and cyclones have impacted some strides in the years.

According to Chimombo, the stakeholders meeting was organised to take stock of how the christian based organisations has performed in the ending 2023.

World Vision International Malawi (WVI) has been working across the country in the areas of Health, Agriculture, Water and Sanitation, Education and Child protection among others over the years.
