Malawi’s infrastructure transparency index lags behind

Malawi has scored a dismal 24.5% on the Infrastructure Transparency Index (ITI), falling short of the global average of 43%. The report, launched by COST Malawi, assessed transparency and accountability in planning, procurement, and implementation of public infrastructure projects.

COST Malawi Chairperson Engineer Samuel Biton attributed the poor score to implementation gaps, despite Malawi’s strong legal framework. “We have good laws, but implementation is the problem,” he said. Public participation is also lacking, making it hard to ensure value for money in infrastructure investments.

The report recommends building capacity in Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), engaging the public, and institutionalizing transparency. Governance Expert Mabvuto Bamusi highlighted concerns over corruption, poor procurement, and limited citizen oversight, leading to low-quality infrastructure.

Construction Industry Regulatory Authority (CIRA) Engineer Gerald Khonje welcomed the report, citing efforts to promote transparency, including disclosure of projects and legal reforms. Malawi’s score is lower than Uganda’s 32.26% and far behind Costa Rica’s 66.95%.

Vice President Appeals for Aid as Floods Ravage Nation, Affecting Over 42,000

Dr. Jane Ansah calls for collective response after relentless rains destroy livelihoods and infrastructure, claiming four lives.

Vice President Dr. Jane Ansah has issued a grave appeal following devastating floods that have swept across the country, affecting more than 42,000 people and claiming four lives. The incessant rains, which began on December 22, have destroyed crops, washed away livestock, and severely damaged homes, roads, and bridges in 18 districts.

In a statement on her Facebook page, Dr. Ansah described the widespread damage as “heartbreaking,” noting that families are losing their livelihoods, homes, and sources of food. She expressed deep sadness despite government preparedness measures enacted after early weather forecasts.

“Government strengthened contingency planning, intensified public awareness campaigns, pre-positioned relief items, and placed search-and-rescue teams on standby,” she wrote. “The damage caused by these rains is heartbreaking.”

The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DODMA) is now leading coordinated response efforts. These include ongoing search and rescue operations, the establishment of emergency operation centres, and the deployment of security forces in the hardest-hit areas.

Current assessments indicate over 9,300 households have been impacted, with 101 injuries recorded so far. The Vice President has called on the public and development partners to heed weather advisories and support relief initiatives.

“Disasters require collective responsibility,” Dr. Ansah urged, emphasizing the need for continued national and international solidarity as the crisis unfolds.

Political activist Bon Kalindo has dedicated the year 2025 to genuine activists who played a pivotal role in the change of the country’s leadership from President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera and MCP to Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika and DPP.

Kalindo said the journey to President Chakwera’s ousting from power was not easy, MCP did everything possible to instill fear in Malawians through terrorism by  MCP panga wielding thugs in a quest for President Chakwera to bounce back into government on the 16th September, 2025 elections.

He said for five years of President Chakwera and his MCP, panga wielding thugs declared Lilongwe a no- go zone to activists holding peaceful protests and opposition political parties particularly the DPP from holding rallies.

Speaking through an audio clip, Kalindo said the influence of MCP panga wielding thugs in terrorizing and hacking innocent citizens in Lilongwe and surrounding areas made the MCP and President Chakwera to feel that majority of Malawians are supporting the MCP.

Kalindo said genuine activists in the names of Ntanyiwa, Bakili Muluzi TV, Pastor Moses Shumba, Bishop Kachenje, Billy Banda, Lytone Mangochi, Hon. Kamlepo Kalua, and others, defied the calls for Malawi to become a one- party state and dictatorship.

He said these activists were releasing audios reaching out to the entire nation to vote for change of leadership from President Chakwera to Professor Mutharika beside them being hunted by MCP police and panga wielding thugs for death.

The activist has expressed his grave concern over the silence by President Professor Mutharika and DPP for failing to appreciate the roles taken by genuine activists that led to the entire population of the country voting for Professor Mutharika into government on the 16th September, 2025 elections.

He said the DPP and President Professor Mutharika have completely forgotten these genuine activists only to tank them not in exchange of money or positions in government but appreciating their central roles in the country’s political change.

The activist said activist JB of USA did his best by mobilizing his friends to contribute a little food to the people of Kasasire in Northern Nkhatabay district who were displaced by MCP Army on the claims that the land belongs to them not the citizens.

“Not even phoning JB in USA to thank him for his tireless efforts in campaigning for change of government in Malawi,” lamented Kalindo.

He said the MCP of President Chakwera spent billions of Kwachas sending police Detectives to South Africa, Zambia, and Mozambique hunting for the heads of Ntanyiwa and Bakili Muluzi TV saying had it been that these two were arrested, they could have been killed by hanging but God spared their lives and to this day, the DPP has thrown them into the dustbins as useless people.

Kalindo said today Malawians that voted for the DPP and Professor Mutharika into government have proved for themselves that in politics, there are no permanent enemies, DPP is dining together with those who have been obtaining court injunctions stopping the party from moving forward.

He said those that were in the forefront advocating for Age Limit Bill to pass in Parliament to block Professor Mutharika from standing on the 16th September, 2025 elections are the ones who are being thanked and given positions in government reminding President Mutharika that God is not sleeping, he is watching all this.

Bushiri pledges K12 million to Miss Malawi runners-up

Prophet Shepherd Bushiri has pledged K12 million to the first and second runners-up of the Miss Malawi pageant.

He made the announcement on Monday during a ceremony at which newly crowned Miss Malawi, Thandie Chisi, received a K50 million prize package.

Bushiri said the gesture reflects his commitment to nurturing talent and supporting young women beyond the main titleholder.



“As we build Goshen City, we also believe in partnering with others to build talent, hope and dreams. This additional support is meant to ensure that the runners-up also benefit from the pageant and remain motivated,” he said.

Subject to the organisers’ allocation, the K12 million will be shared between Irene Navicha and Tina Mkombezi, who finished as first and second runners-up after initially receiving no prizes.

Miss Malawi Thandie Chisi commended Goshen City for sponsoring the K50 million prize package and for extending financial support to the runners-up.

She said she intends to use the opportunity to strengthen her organisations that promote the welfare and empowerment of women and girls.

The K50 million prize awarded to Miss Malawi covers personal expenses, a fully paid one-year apartment and the operational costs of the Miss Malawi office for one year.

MMRA raises alarm over illegal mining in Kasungu

The Mining and Minerals Regulatory Authority (MMRA) has expressed concern over the continued illegal mining of precious stones in areas where fatal accidents and injuries have occurred following the collapse of mines in Kasungu District.

In an interview with 247 Malawi News,MMRA Director General(DG), Mphatso Chikoti, said some individuals are deliberately facilitating the continuation of the illegal activities in order to advance their personal interests.


“If we deal with those who are promoting this malpractice, we believe the situation will improve,” he said .

Commenting on the matter, mining expert Grain Malunga said the challenge is that too much authority is concentrated within the Ministry of Mining.

He noted that there is a need to decentralise some powers to local councils and community structures to improve oversight.

Earlier this year, more than 10 people were killed while others sustained injuries after a mine collapsed in areas under Traditional Authorities(T/As) Suza and Chitathamapiri in Kasungu District.
