Kajanike Lipunga now Illovo Malawi Limited chairman

Jimmy Kajanike Lipunga is now a new is the new chairman of Illovo Sugar Malawi Limited following his appointment for the post announced by the company on January 25,2023.

According to the statement by the company’s secretary Maureen Kachingwe, Lipungu whose appointment is effective January 24,2022 replaces Gavin Barry Dalgleish who stepped down from the post some weeks ago.

As a Chartered Accountant, joined Deloitte and Touche in 1983.

He worked in various in various roles including the financial position of Supervising Senior.

In March 1993, Lipunga joined Bhanol company limited as its financial manager providing leadership to the entire finance department.

In August 1996, he transitioned into public sector and joined the then Private Commission as a Director of Finance. In this role, Jimmy was responsible for financial analyses and due diligence reviews for state owned enterprises earmarked for privatization.

He was a key player in valuation of shares and assets for enterprises earmarked for privatization.

Jimmy oversaw the first five IPOs on the Malawi Stock Exchange including Illovo Sugar Malawi plc.

In 2004, he was promoted to Transactions Director a position he served for one before ascending to the position of Chief Executive Officer in 2006.

He was the key player in the transition from the privatization framework to the public-private partnership paradigm. He retired in August 2019 after serving as the Chief Executive Officer for 14 years.

Jimmy is the past President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Malawi ( 2004-2006).

He is also the past chairman of the Malawi Accountants Board.

He has served on several high profile boards including Old Mutual Malawi plc, Reserve Bank of Malawi ( RBM), Malawi Revenue Authority ( MRA), Competition and Fair Trading Commission ( CFTC), Malawi Airlines, Lafarge Malawi Limited, Sunbird Tourism plc, MPICO plc, National Bank of Malawi plc ( NBM plc) and Power Market Limited.

Illovo Sugar Malawi plc is listed on the Malawi Stock Exchange with 76% of the issued share capital held by the Illovo Group and the balance by public and other institutional investors.

The company’s corporate office is based in Limbe, Blantyre with two operations at Nchalo in the southern part of Malawi in Chikwawa and Dwangwa in the mid-central region of Nkhotakota, producing sugar cane and raw, brown, and refined sugar, together with speciality sugars especially at Nchalo.

The company annually cultivates around 1.8 million tons of cane which together with approximately 350 000 tons produced by Malawian smallholder farmers, results in the production of about 250 000 tons of sugar.

Wikise, Pop Young spice up Malawi Cultural Day in Tanzania

Malawi musician Wikise and the fast rising afro star Pop Young on Friday evening spiced up Malawi Cultural Day event held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The Malawi High Commission in Tanzania organized the event in order to promote Malawi culture and as part of Diaspora Engagement.

Speaking at the event, the High Commissioner to Tanzania,Andrew Kumwenda encouraged unity among Malawians and urged them to continue investing back home.

” Let’s always do things together. Remember, unity is important. Let’s also not forget investing much in our development projects back home. This is how we can develop Malawi,” said the High Commissioner.

On their part, Wikise and Pop Young thanked Malawi High Commission and Vodacom for the event.

“Thank you so much to all Malawians living in Tanzania for trusting in us to entertain people at Malawi Cultural Day event in Dar es Salaam.

“I actually never believed it when I received the request to be the main act at the event.

With several role models in the entertainment industry, Pop Young inspires to thrive in music business and be recognized beyond the boarders.

Chimwemwe Idana to be without a team despite passing trials in South Africa

Former Nyasa Big Bullets player and Flames midfielder Chimwemwe Idana will be without a team until July this year despite passing trials at South Africa’s DSTV Premiership side South Sekhukhune United.

Idana left the country for South Africa where he impressed the team’s technical panel but has been told that he will only be signed in July this year because the team’s quota is full.

The 2020/21 TNM Super Player of the Season left Nyasa Big Bullets in January this year, after failing to agree on contract extension terms.

After the development, Idana was linked with a move to capital city giants Silver Strikers but the two sides are reported to have failed to reach an agreement.

Meanwhile, the midfielder, who was also linked with moves to some Tanzanian clubs, has been dropped by Flames coach Mario Marinica in the team’s preparations for next month’s back to back 2023 AFCON Qualifying matches against Egypt.

Nankhumwa hails Mai Halima Girls Secondary School for girl child education promotion

Leader of opposition in Parliament who is also Democratic Progressive Party ( DPP) Vice President for Southern Region, Kondwani Nankhumwa hailed Mai Halima Secondary School in Mulanje for being one few secondary schools promoting girl child education in the country.

Speaking on Saturday during school’s best performer awards ceremony that was aimed at recognizing best students who scored the highest points and grades in the 2022 Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE), Primary School Leaving Certificate of Education ( PSLCE) and Junior Certificate of Education (JCE) in Mulanje, Nankhumwa expressed deepest pride for the school’s top performance in the district which motivate many girls to acquire education.

Nankhumwa urged Malawians to always protect girl children.

The opposition leader in Parliament said, everyone must ensure that girls are always attaining best forms of education for the betterment of their future and the development of the country.

Nankhumwa extended his gratitude appreciation by giving K50,000 to Farzaanah Khalifah, a female student who scored 13 points during the 2022 MSCE examination at the school.

On her remarks, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Aisha Mambo emphasized the need for quality education for the girl children to ensure national rapid of economic and Social development.

Mambo advised girls who are at school across the country to avoid indulging in immoral behaviours which would jeopardize realisation of their full potential future.

She said:” being a deputy speaker, am living as a role model for the many girl child and urging them to work hard in class.”

Mambo also presented K50,000 to Khalifah as the appreciation for being outstanding student at the school.

Mai Halima girls Secondary school introduced the awards ceremony with an aim of recognising outstanding students, teachers and staff members who perform well at the end the of each and every academic year.

According to Human Rights watch report, on average,one out of two girls get married at the age of 18 and half of the women aged 20 to 24 years of age get married before reaching the age of 18.

The award presentation ceremony brought together prominent people like Senior Chief Chikumbu, Mulanje west legislature Yusufu Nthenda and former Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) veteran broadcaster Mostaf Ayami.

Zambia national dies in a road accident Mchinji

A 12-year-old Zambian is reported to have died while three police officers and four passengers sustained serious injuries after a Toyota Landcruiser MP2642 was involved in an accident at Cheyadi area along the Lilongwe-Mchinji road on Friday evening.

According to police report this publication has in possession, the vehicle was coming from the direction of Lilongwe heading towards Mchinji, carrying eight passengers including suspects.



Upon arrival at Cheyadi, in the course of overtaking a salon car, the driver lost control of the motor vehicle and it swerved to a verge and overturned.

The Motor vehicle was being driven by Sub Inspector Christopher Mtambalika aged 40, of Kandota Village, Traditional Authority Kwataine in Ntcheu.
