Government mulls lifting ban on scrap metal exports with conditions

By Jones Gadama

The Ministry of Trade is considering lifting the ban on the exportation of scrap metals, but with certain conditions in place.

According to the Minister of Trade, Engineer Vitumbiko Mumba, the government wants to ensure that Malawians can conduct business without suffocating the economy.

In a recent interview with this publication Minister Mumba said that scrap metal dealers have been asked to list down items that are a source of vandalism, such as copper and manholes, which will not be included in the exportation.

Mumba

This move aims to strike a balance between promoting trade and preventing the vandalism of critical infrastructure.

The ban on scrap metal exports was initially imposed due to the rampant vandalism of copper cables and other items, which was threatening the national development agenda.

The Ministry of Trade had revoked the exportation of scrap metals under the Control of Goods (Import and Export License) regulations.

Minister Mumba’s proposal suggests that the government is willing to revisit the ban and explore ways to promote the scrap metal industry while minimizing the risks associated with vandalism.

The move is likely to have a positive impact on the business community, particularly scrap metal dealers who have been affected by the ban.

However, the government will need to ensure that the conditions for exportation are strictly enforced to prevent the vandalism of critical infrastructure.

The listing of specific items that will be excluded from exportation is a step in the right direction, and it will be important to monitor the implementation of these regulations to ensure that they are effective in preventing vandalism.

Overall, the proposed lifting of the ban on scrap metal exports with conditions is a welcome development for the business community.

It remains to be seen how the government will implement these regulations and ensure that the scrap metal industry contributes to the country’s economic growth without compromising national development.

Both referees are expected to bring their expertise and experience to the tournament, and their involvement is expected to bring valuable exposure to Malawian football.

The COSAFA Championship is a highly anticipated event in the Southern African football calendar, featuring some of the top teams in the region.

Malawi’s national team, Flames, is participating in the tournament and is grouped with Angola, Lesotho, and Namibia.

The team’s performance in the tournament will be closely watched, and the referees will play a crucial role in ensuring that the matches are fair and enjoyable for the fans.

Nkhakananga’s involvement in the tournament is notable not only for his on-field officiating but also for his role in providing services through the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system.

This technology is designed to help referees make accurate decisions, and Nkhakananga’s expertise in using it will be valuable in ensuring that the matches are officiated fairly.

The tournament, which will conclude on June 22 in Bloemfontein, promises to be an exciting event, with some of the top teams in Southern Africa competing for the championship.

Poor understanding of political parties act fuels violence, handouts – CMD

A poor understanding of the Political Parties Act is contributing to the incitement of violence and issuing of handouts among political parties in Malawi, according to the Centre for Multiparty Democracy (CMD). CMD Program Manager Ruth Mthekana made the observation during a meeting with political parties represented in Parliament, aimed at promoting peace ahead of the elections.

The meeting also tackled the issue of voter apathy, which was evident during the voter registration exercise.

Mthekana’s comments highlight the need for political parties to understand and adhere to the provisions of the Political Parties Act, which promotes democratic principles and values.

UTM Regional Governor for the North-North, Dr. Moses Mlenga, attributed the persistence of violence to the lack of action from authorities.

“It’s frustrating to see other parties doing the opposite, with the Registrar of Political Parties failing to take action,” Mlenga said.

However, Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Regional Publicity Secretary Khumbo Mwangulu disagreed, saying it’s easy to blame the government when things go wrong.

“People should remember that the government includes both ruling and opposition parties,” Mwangulu said.

He emphasized that promoting peace and ending the culture of handouts is a collective responsibility, requiring continuous awareness for both parties and their supporters.

The meeting underscores the importance of promoting peace and stability in the country, particularly ahead of the elections.

Political parties must work together to create an environment that encourages voter participation and reduces the risk of violence.

The CMD’s efforts to promote peace and democracy are commendable, and it’s essential for all stakeholders to support such initiatives.

By working together, Malawi can ensure that its democratic processes are strengthened, and the country moves towards a more peaceful and stable future.

The opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has expressed its grave concern over the arrest of its Vice President for the North Jappie Mhango by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in relation to his tenure as Minister of Transport and Public Works from 2016 to 2017.

Jappie Mhango was arrested by Police on Monday and his arrest raised questions not only by the DPP but many Malawians questioning the timing of his arrest with only 3 months to go before the elections and motivation behind the arrest.

The DPP has expressed its worry that the allegation was committed over 7 years ago and today, the MCP government has become the focus of attention questioning where has the ACB been all this time and why are these allegations being pursued now as the electoral process intensifies?

Namalomba

In a statement dated 3rd June, 2025 signed by its Publicity Secretary Shadric Namalomba, the DPP has further question the MCP led government why they are only arresting opposition members while those in the current Chakwera government remain untouched?

The DPP says Malawians see this arrest not in isolation, but the MCP government’s manufactured witch-hunt-weaponizing agencies like ACB and police to silence its critics of its incompetence lamenting that many DPP officials are on bail without evidence.

The Party says it remains unwavering in its commitment to democracy and will not be cowed by such an action saying it stand resolute in their mission to liberate Malawians from any semblance of authoritarianism and ensures just and fair society for all.

The DPP has called on all of its members, supporters, and the citizens of Malawi to stay united and vigilant saying it is through their collective strength and determination that they will continue to fight for the interests of the nation and its people.

“Together, we will overcome these challenges and ensure Malawi remains a true democracy, reads the statement in part.

A Malawi Congress Party (MCP) diehard of Mvera in Dowa district Mr. Rodgers Kamphangala, has warned the MCP and President Chakwera that selective application of justice will take the party to nowhere.

Kamphangala said there are people in the MCP that are corrupt and have benefited a lot from their corruption scheme but the party is shielding them from arrests and prosecutions in court saying time is coming for all these untouchables to be the touchables.

He has assured those corrupt individuals in the MCP that whether it will take long that the MCP continue ruling the country, there will come one day, the party will be ousted from government and the government coming will prosecute all of them in less than 6 months to test the corridors of Maula Prison.

“Today you are being shielded by President Chakwera iand once Chakwera is ousted from government you will have nowhere to run away,” said Kamphangala.
