First Lady Madam Monica Chakwera has urged people in the country to support the elderly by taking responsibility of their daily needs.

Madam Chakwera made the call at Chikoko Bay State Lodge when she hosted a luncheon to 120 elderly women around Chikoko Bay in Mangochi on Saturday.

Chakwera said the elderly are important people in society, hence the need to support and respect them.

‘‘This is Christmas season, and we are also going for the new year. As such, I thought I should celebrate with the elderly, as I am part and parcel of them.

‘‘Therefore, my advice to the younger generation is that while government is supporting the elderly through a number of programmes such as the Social Cash Transfer (SCT), they should consider the elderly as our assets for wisdom,” she said.

Chakwera emphasized that it is wrong for the community to consider the elderly as witches.

‘‘Let us avoid viewing the elderly as witches. They are just older people that God has blessed with longer life, a thing that we need to celebrate,’’ she said.

In her remarks, Special Advisor to the President on Women and Child Development, Dorothy Chirambo commended the first lady for inviting the elderly to the State Lodge.

Chirambo said this shows that the first couple has a heart for the elderly.

According to the chairperson of the organising committee who is also the Director of News and Programmes at MBC, Zilani Khonje Phiri, credibility and transparency in nomination and voting processes have been maintained.

In his remarks, Humphrey Mpondaminga, Director of Arts in the Ministry of Local Government, Unity and Culture said there’s no development of arts minus media houses like MBC.

“It remains a fact that MBC is a big player in the arts industry and initially it had recording studios which produced most of the classic songs in the 70s, 80s and early 90s which are still enjoying airplay in most stations across the country. MBC should be commended for bringing back Entertainers of The Year. This is a big stage to showcase talent,” said Mpondaminga.

Entertainers of The Year Awards has returned after a break of 18 years.

This year’s nominations are in seven categories recognising diverse talents within the entertainment industry.

Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture Richard Chimwendo Banda has challenged chiefs in the country to be pioneers in addressing cases of early pregnancies and child marriages that continue to exist in their respective communities.

He made the remarks on Friday in Mchinji during elevation ceremony of Sub-Traditional Authorities Ndawambe and Pinda to full Traditional Authorities.

Chimwendo-Banda said chiefs in the country have a big role to deal with parents that force their children into marriage adding the tendency is fueling cases of school dropout.

The Minister further asked the chiefs to help the government in ensuring corrupt-free implementation of the Affordable Inputs Program(AIP) that targeted 1.5 million beneficiaries in the 2023/2024 farming season.

“If these local leaders are not in the forefront fighting corruption in programs such as AIP, their subjects will still suffer from their conduct,” said Chimwendo Banda.

He also asked the chiefs to dissolve Village Development Committees-VDCs if they prove to be fuelling corruption in their respective areas of jurisdiction.

On behalf of other chiefs, Senior Chief Mavwere hailed the government for the speedy elevation of the two chiefs to Traditional Authority; saying the previous regimes were slow in such processes.

In his remarks , Mchinji South West lawmaker, who is also Lands Minister, Deus Gumba said the elevated chiefs would play a crucial role in working hand in hand with their VDCs; adding that’s where development starts.

The elevation of the two chiefs came a year after their elevation to Sub Traditional Authorities.

Malawi’s inflation rate increases to 33.1% from 26.9%

National Statistics Office(NSO) has announced that the annual inflation rate in the country has increased to 33.1 percent from the previous month’s rate of 26.9 percent.

This is the highest inflation rate recorded since January 2023.

However, the year-on-year rate stands at 25.9 percent.

According to NSO, the inflation rate has been steadily rising in the past few months, reaching 26.7 percent in February, 27 percent in March, 28 percent in April, and 29.2 percent in May.

Commenting on this, an economic expert, Colleen Kaluwa attributed the hyper-inflation to the scarcity of food and the increasing fuel prices in the country.

Kaluwa suggested that the government should prioritize the implementation of railway lines to facilitate fuel transportation.

Kaluwa also urged the commercial banks in the country to lower the interest rates charged to the business community which could potentially provide some relief to businesses struggling with the high inflation rates.

Earlier, projections by the Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) estimated the average annual inflation rate for 2023 to be 28.2 percent.

However, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has revised their projection for Malawi’s average inflation in 2023 to 30.3 percent from the initial estimate of 24.8 percent.
