Chakwera to grace launch of Theological society of Malawi

President Dr Lazarus Chakwera will this Thursday attend the launch of the Theological Society of Malawi,. This has been announced in a communique signed by the secretary to the president Dr Collen Zamba.

The statement says the president will grace the occasion that will will take place at BICC in Lilongwe

This society discusses theological issues that are emerging and are of great concern, shares experiences and encourages exchange visits in member institutions. Also provides a platform for publishing books and articles.

The first conference of the Society took place at Nkhoma University in 2020. Proceedings of the conference are published in a book titled “Theology in Malawi: Prospects for the 2020s”

The second one was held at University of Livingstonia, Ekwendeni Campus under the theme “Decolonisation of theological curriculum in an online age”.

Government Committed to the Fight Against Cholera and Polio – 3.5 Children Vaccinated Against Polio

Minister of Health Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda MP says government is committed to the fight against Cholera and Polio as cholera outbreak hits lake shore districts of Nkhatabay and Nkhotakota. Chiponda said this during a press briefing which she held alongside Minister of Information Gospel Kazako at the Central Office of Information in Lilongwe.

Chiponda said so far, her ministry has managed to come up with isolation centres in the affected areas as well as necessary drugs for treating cholera patients. She added that her ministry has also distributed chlorine for water treatment and intensified surveillance for detection of the disease and containment of further spreading.

The Minister then commended the Ministry of Water and Sanitation for supplying the people in the affected areas with clean water. She also thanked other development partners such as UNICEF, WHO and Red Cross for their assistance.

On the fight against polio, the minister said so far 3.5 million children have been vaccinated during the previous three rounds and she pleaded with the remaining parents to vaccinate their children in the last round even if they were previously vaccinated, to boost immunity.

The minister also touched on Covid 19 by reminding Malawians that it is still existing and they still need to follow all precautionary measures for prevention. She said Malawi has enough stocks of Covid 19 vaccine and called on Malawians who got vaccinated already to go and get a different type of vaccine in what she termed ‘mix and match’. She said this is a way of boosting the immunity against covid 19.

148 Malawian nationals Jailed in Zimbabwe for being found without legal documents

A court in Zimbabwe has sentenced 148 Malawian nationals to between four and six months in prison, for being found in the country without legal documents. The Malawians are awaiting deportation by the Chivhu and Mvuma magistrates.

Authorities say 65 travellers were intercepted by police in Chivhu, while 83 were arrested in Mvuma, the media reported.

Chivhu Magistrate Henry Sande sentenced the group of 65 to four months’ imprisonment, wholly suspended, pending deportation.

Zimbabwean authorities have jailed 148 Malawian nationals found without legal documents, local Malawian media reports

Prosecutors told the court that on Monday that police officers manning a roadblock at the 141km peg along Harare-Masvingo Road intercepted 65 Malawians travelling by road.

The foreign nationals were in two buses.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police officers found 55 passengers on the Sarge bus and 11 on the other bus, according Zimbabwean news outlet Zim Eye.

Earlier this month, Zimbabwean police detained 86 Malawians suspected of trying to cross into South Africa illegally, according to online news outlet The East African.

Police said the 86 Malawians were found in a house in a town near Zimbabwe’s border with Mozambique.

“On August 15, police in Murewa arrested 86 foreign nationals comprising 76 males and 10 females, for entering the country without travel documents,” the Zimbabwe Republic Police said.

“The suspects were intercepted at a house in a medium-density suburb in Murewa after being assisted by a local transporter.”

‘Tonse Alliance is trying its best to improve every situation in the country’ says Kazako

Minister of Information and digitisation, Gospel Kazako says the Tonse Alliance administration is trying its best as a lot of things have improved in the country compared to how things were six months ago.

The Minister speaking at a press briefing in Lilongwe was commenting on the recent Afrobarometer opinion poll which indicates that majority of respondents said they would vote for the Democratic Progressive Party if elections were conducted in February this year.

Kazako said a lot of things have changed since the survey was conducted.

He mentioned that government has managed to employ 2200 primary school teachers and 2599 secondary school teachers, increased university students allowances and also constructing roads in some districts of the country.

“If another afrobarometer survey comes today, we will be able to prove that this government has tried and people will agree that there is an improvement in some sectors, ” said Kazako.

Government suspends Admarc- staff sent on forced leave until further notice

Government has suspended all services of state grain marketer, ADMARC, with immediate effect and staff has been told not to report for duties unless instructed as such.

The call was made by Agriculture minister, Lobin Lowe, when he addressed the media in Lilongwe on this matter

In his speech lowe said For over two years government has been analyzing best ways of restructuring the and has established that ADMARC’s failure to tick and bring the desired results is attributed to numerous factors.
“Some of these factors include:

1.Prolonged conflicts between ADMARC Board of
directors and Management leading to poor
governance
2.Abuse of Company finances and theft by some
employees
3.Low productivity contributed to laziness of
some Company employees
4.Suspected corrupt practices perpetrated by
some employees of the Company
5.Unprocedural recruitment of some employees
leading to excess workforce in the Company

Agriculture Minister Lobin Lowe


Lowe says Admarc staff will be on paid leave. Only staff working in strategic ADMARC selling points will continue selling maize to ensure people are not negatively affected.

“In line with the cited mandates, the Shareholders have observed continued low performance of the Company and have, therefore, decided to take the
following actions with immediate effect:
1. Re-define the functions of the Company
2. Suspend all the services except social services until further notice
3. Send all members of staff on paid leave except those that will be communicated to.” Lowe said

The minister says the idea is to ensure ADMARC is serving the purpose it was originally established for.

Lowe says corruption and abuse of resources are some of the factors affecting operations of ADMARC hence this decision.
