The governing Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has denied reports that it is planning to form an alliance with the newly registered Odya Zake Alibe Mlandu party ahead of the 2025 general elections.
In an interview with 247 Malawi News,MCP’s Second Deputy Publicity Secretary, Ken Msonda, described the speculation as ‘politically immature,’ emphasizing that the party is focused on national development and has no time for alliance talks.
Odya Zake now registered at a party
Msonda said MCP is confident in its ability to win the upcoming elections on its own and will not be swayed by speculation about potential alliances.
He added that with only three months to go before the elections, it is premature for parties to begin discussing alliances.
The MCP’s stance comes amid growing speculation among some Malawians that Odya Zake Alibe Mlandu could be a potential ally for the party.
Odya Zake Alibe Mulandu is a political party founded by Vice President Michael Usi.
Usi launched the party on April 27 2025 , but kept a tight lid on whether he will be on the presidential ballot in the September 16 General Elections.
The party that started as a movement went into oblivion in February 2019 after former vice-president the late Saulos Chilima picked Usi as his running mate in the nullified presidential election.
The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has arrested former Minister of Transport and Public Works Jappie Mhango over allegations of influencing the sale of public houses at low prices.
Mhango, who is also the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Vice President for the North, confirmed the development.
Mhango stated that he is currently at the ACB offices in Mzuzu, where he is facing questioning over the allegations. According to him, the alleged incident occurred in 2017 or 2018.
Jappie Mhango
The ACB’s investigation into the matter is ongoing, and Mhango’s arrest is part of the bureau’s efforts to hold individuals accountable for alleged corrupt practices.
The ACB’s actions demonstrate its commitment to fighting corruption in Malawi. The bureau’s efforts to investigate and prosecute individuals accused of corrupt practices are crucial in promoting transparency and accountability.
The ACB’s investigation is expected to uncover the facts surrounding the alleged sale of the public houses. If found guilty, Mhango could face serious consequences.
The arrest has raised questions about the handling of public assets during Mhango’s tenure as minister.
