By Chisomo Phiri

Silver Strikers Football Club has announced the appointment of a Dutch coach Hendrick Pieter de Jongh, as the team’s newhead coach.

De Jogh has joined the Bankera on a two-year contract deal.

The club’s secretary Peter Masiye has confirmed the hiring of the experienced new coach with a successful track record.

“The coach has vast experience with a proven track record and we took our time because we wanted to engage an ideal one. It is a performance-based contract that will be reviewed annually,” he said.

De Jongh is expected to arrive in Malawi on Sunday, after signing his contract with approval from the Reserve Bank of Malawi.

He was most recently working with Somalia national team, as well as FC Platinum, Highlanders, AFC Leopards, and FC Cape Town in the past.

De Jongh has 31 years of experience under his belt and prefers 5-4-1 diamond formation which may be employed by the Area 47-based side during his tenure.

He takes over from McDonald Yobe and Leo Mpulula who were interim caretakers after Zambian Dan Kabwe was fired last July due to Silver Strikers’ poor performance last season when they failed to claim any silverware or even secure top 4 placement in the 16-team TNM Super League.

Police in Lilongwe are keeping in custodu a reporter for an online publication Maravi Post Dorica Mtenje over a story the publication published last month.

MISA Malawi Chairpeson Teresa Ndanga has confirmed the development saying Mtenje who was detained on Thursday is being held at the Malawi Police Service (MPS) headquarters in Lilongwe.

Ndanga says Mtenje denies authoring nor publishing the story in question.

“The police have also summoned Maravi Post Country Director Lloyd M’bwana for questioning over the same.

“MISA Malawi engaged the police over the issue during which the MPS National Spokesperson Peter Kalaya said the police ‘invited’ Mtenje and M’bwana, journalists connected to the publication, as part of their investigation on the alleged ‘fake story’ that Maravi Post published,” quoted Ndanga in a statement.

She adds “Kalaya said the police were only acting on a complaint by the National Intelligence Service Director. According to Kalaya, the content of the story contravenes Electronic Transactions and Cyber Security Act and they are just enforcing the law.

“MISA Malawi has been advocating for civil remedies in issues of defamation as opposed to criminal defamation remedies that the country is following.”

Ndanga says, MISSA is therefore, calling on both the complainant to withdraw the criminal defamation complaint and the police to release the detained journalist.

She says the media body is currently monitoring the situation and will be providing updates as events unfold.

Katuli Police Unit in Mangochi District is keeping in its custody a 43-year-old man, Abubakar Ayilu, on allegations that he shot to death a Kabaza motorcycle operator, Rabson Allie aged 53, with unidentified rifle on suspicion that he was having a love affair with his wife.

It is alleged that a few months ago, the suspect vowed to deal with Allie (now deceased) after he heard rumours that his wife was going out with him.

On the night of February 7, 2023 the suspect and his four accomplices invaded Allie’s compound at Uluche Village in Traditional Authority Katuli in the district and found him with his wife and three kids.

The five who carried panga knives and unidentified rifle threatened to kill the whole family if they attempted to shout for help.

They shot Allie on the right knee after beating him mercilessly then fled while Allie was rushed to Katuli Health Centre where he died while receiving treatment.

The matter was reported at Katuli Police Unit who visited the scene and found one empty cartridge.

Postmortem conducted at the hospital revealed that Allie succumbed to severe loss of blood.

Meanwhile, investigations are still underway to arrest the remaining suspects and recover the rifle.

Ayilu hails from Kwizimba Village in Traditional Authority Katuli in Mangochi District.

DPP presidential aspirant Cedrick Ngalande urges Chakwera to replace Chizuma with a competent person

All of a sudden Martha Chizuma has become a protected individual in the country and it has become a taboo for anyone to speak ill against her. However, not everyone is afraid to speak the truth that speaks volumes of the embattled Anti-Corruption Bureau Director General. One such dare-devil is Cedrick Ngalande

Writing on his Facebook Page, Ngalande who is one of those nursing leadership ambitions for the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has asked President Lazarus McCathy Chakwera to fire Chizuma and replace her with a disciplined and productive person who will not only restore the dignity of the ACB but will take the fight of corruption forward.

Ngalande

He wrote: “This is a moment that calls for true leadership. The President must assert the sovereignty of the Republic by firing Chizuma and replacing her with another fierce corruption czar, disciplined and productive fierce Czar, only more disciplined and productive.”

Ngalande is of the view that the protracted Chizuma saga is an unecessary distraction from the fight against corruption and it needs to come to an end for the sake of progress in the fight against the vice.

“In any case, the circus around Chizuma is an unnecessary distraction that has gone on for too long,” he said.

Like many who are worried about the American and British continued meddling in the issue of Chizuma, Ngalande wondered as to what could be the motive of the two embassies on the issue.

He wondered why the two embassies resort to issuing intimidating statements when they have not sat down with government. He opinies that perhaps the two embassies are agitating for Malawians to rise up and overthrow government.

He said: “Its difficult to understand the real motive behind statements being issued by foreign embassies to government. Have the normal channels to the foreign Ministry closed?. Is the intention to have the Malawians rise up and overthrow their government.”

In an ideal situations questions like these ought to be soberly asked by Malawians but instead what is happening is that many Malawians are rooting for sanctions against their own government because of Chizuma who has proved beyond reasonable doubt that she is a misfit for the post of the ACB Director.

Ngalande’s call may be unpopular in the eyes of many but this because of their loyalty to Chizumaa but if anything why should the fight against corruption be seen as if it revolve around Chizuma alone?
