By Dean Chisambo

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) aspirants Kondwani Malemia Nankhumwa and Paul Msikula Gadama have been tipped to lead in the southern region party’s presidential race.

This is based on the serious survey conducted by Reality On The Ground ( ROTG) in the southern region of Malawi with the objective of finding out the most popular presidential aspirants likely to win if the convention is going to be held in April 2023.

The ROTG team was deployed on the ground where they interviewed 3000 people across the southern region to answer a few questions.

Gadama

Out of 3000, 1347 favoured Nankhumwa representing 44 percent while 987 people favoured Gadama representing 32 percent.

326 favoured for Joseph Mwanamvekha representing 10 percent, 203 people favoured for Bright Msaka representing 6.7 percent, 114 people favoured Dalitso Kabambe representing 3.8 percent and 23 people favoured Cedrik Ngalande which representing 0.7 percent respectively.

The ROTG team did not include former President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika who is also incumbent party President because he has not come open to declare his interest to compete for the party presidency in July.

The survey centered on the six presidential aspirants who are vying for the DPP presidency to represent the party in 2025 poll. The six presidential aspirants are Kondwani Malemia Nankhumwa, Paul Msikula Gadama,Josephy Mathyola Mwanamvekha, Bright Msaka, Dalitso Kabambe and Cedrik Ngalande.

The ROTG team is now in the central region to conduct similar survey.

The DPP will hold its convention in July 2023 where members are expected to elect the presidential candidate who is also going to compete for 2025 presidential poll.

It has emerged that some off-campus students at the University of Malawi ( UNIMA) in Zomba are on the verge of withdrawing their studies at the university due to lack of accommodation in areas they are residing.

“Here at University of University of Malawi students are struggling especially us from poor family backgrounds.

“Some of the problems we are facing include lack of food, lack of money to pay rent.

“Most of us, none of our relatives can manage to pay rent and provide us with basic necessities at higher learning institutions like this. Due to these problems we see some students commiting suicide, sleeping on empty stomach and extra,” said Joseph.

He added:”For example, today, we have just raised funds to our fellow students. This student had no food, no house to reside due to lack of accommodation fee, he was sleeping together with a certain guard and the management is aware of this.”

The student said the situation is forcing some students to fall into the trap of immoral behaviors such as prostitution which puts them at a risk of contracting HIV/AIDS.

“We are at a great risk and we do not know if our future will still be bright. It’s a bad situation as some of us are stealing maize from their landlords, phones and laptops from their friends so as they can have something to survive.

“Some of our fellow students are now in prisons meaning they have been completely withdrawn from the college,” he said.

Joseph then appealed to the general public and other well-wishers to come and rescue them out of the challenge.

“If you have potential help university of Malawi students with soya pieces, flour and money.

“You can help with little that you have, it will mean a lot,” he appealed.
