Chinese President Xi Jinping has invited President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera to be a special guest of honour at the 2023 China—Africa Economic and Trade Expo which is slated for the month of June 2023.

Presenting the invitation letter to the Malawi leader on Wednesday 24th May 2023 at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe, Chinese Ambassador to Malawi, His Excellency Long Zhou said the Chinese government will foot all the costs of the president and his delegation including the cost of travel, accommodation and logistics.

Ambassador Zhou said the invitation symbolises the Chinese government’s fulfilment of the promise made to President Chakwera by China’s President in 2021, that he would be invited to China as a guest of their government.

He said over the past three years, the Chakwera led administration has registered significant progress in increasing the number of exports that enter the Chinese market, stressing that during the period under review, several deals have been negotiated and agreed.

Zhou added that the China – Africa Expo gives President Chakwera to showcase Malawian products and exports to China.

“It also gives an opportunity for President Chakwera to highlight the relationship between China and Africa, as there will also be representatives from other African nations which President Chakwera will be speaking on behalf of,” he said.

Under the umbrella theme of “Common Development for a Shared Future,” the expo will focus on the key areas and emerging fields of China – Africa economic and trade cooperation, during which there will be 30 activities in five categories of major activities, high-end forums, matchmaking and negotiation, thematic seminars and other supporting activities.

Mighty Wanderers Football Club (2021) Limited, the owners of Mighty Mukuru Wanderers Football Club have announced that they will not participate in any international tournament this season.

In a statement signed by Board Chairman, Chancy Gondwe and Acting Chief Executive Officer(CEO) Roosevelt Mpinganjira the Club says their focus this season is to redevelop the squad before deciding to participate in an international competition.

“The Club will not participate in this year’s tournaments as we are busy with the redevelopment of the squad.

“We have decided to defer international participations to ensure that we fully develop the squad before we consider competing in such tournaments.

“It is better we compete than just participate for the sake of it.

“The members of the general public and all our stakeholders are also informed that the Club is at the moment developing its strategic plan for the next 10 years which is a long-term plan both technically and commercially. This is in line with our vision of developing Wanderers as a going concern,” reads the statement in part.

In December this year, the Club’s President, Thomson Mpinganjira told Nation Publications Limited that they had interest in participating in the tournament that they played for the last time in 2018.

“Participation in such tournament (Caf Inter Clubs)has to be earned, as such, we had to wait until the Airtel Top 8 final. We shall endeavour to participate, but at this stage, we will look at the numbers. It will be a great exposure for us all, including Mukuru across the continent,” said Mpinganjira after winning the Airtel Top-8 Cup.

Following Wanderers’ decision, only FCB Nyasa Big Bullets are reportedly willing to participate in the tournaments.

Blue Eagles and Kamuzu Barracks also showed the interests earlier this season.

The last time Wanderers played in the Caf Inter Clubs was in 2018 when they were beaten 6-1 on aggregate by AS Vita Club of DRC.

Minister of Local Government Richard Chimwendo Banda has accused Malawi Police Service (MPS) officers for demanding hefty allowance whenever engaged to clear out vendors in the streets back to designated places.

Chimwendo raised the concern at the opening of Lilongwe City Summit.

The local government minister described the behaviour as strange saying the officers are employed to enforce the law.

He appealed to the men in uniform to do their job as stipulated under the law.

He said there is need for everyone to join hands to make Lilongwe City a better place to live.

“It doesn’t need a workshop to clear the vendors it is a straight forward issue. No need for any expert its a matter of just following the law,” he said

The summit is expected to discuss four thematic areas which include street vending, waste management, recreation and infrastructure development such as roads and buildings.
