NBM bails out Operation Smile Malawi with K3 million

As one way of reaching out to children with cleft lips and palates in the country, National Bank of Malawi ( NBM) on Monday February 27,2023 donated 3,000,000 Kwacha to Operation Smile Malawi.

Speaking after donating the cheque, National Bank Capital City Service Centre Manager George Nyirenda, said one of the bank’s policy is to reach out to people who are less privileged hence the gesture.

Operation Smile Malawi board chairperson Haroon Sacranie says every year they support operations for more than 350 children born with cleft lips and palates.



Operation Smile Malawi is a medical charity that provides free surgeries to children and adults born with cleft lip and cleft palate.

Founded in 2012, Operation Smile Malawi has provided life-changing surgery to more than 1,700 people across the country.

Cleft is a birth defect where a child is born with a slit on the lip or a hole in the roof of the mouth (the palate).

Children with this birth defect may face numerous life challenges including difficulties in eating, drinking, speaking and hearing. Children with cleft also face painful stigma and discrimination.

Malawi’s veteran producer Lemekeza Phiri dies

Death has been one of the country’s long- serving music producers and pianists Lemekeza Phiri.

Family members confirmed the death of Phiri on Monday saying he died in India where he went to seek medical help.

Phiri’s death shocked many musicians in the country including Wendy Harawa.

Harawa wrote on her facebook wall:
“The industry has lost an asset. Heaven has gained. Rest in peace Lemekeza Phiri.”

Until his death,Phiri was a member of the original Mibawa TV Band.

He hailed from Ntcheu district.

Chitipa police nab 20 Ethiopians over illegal entry

Police in Chitipa are keeping in custody 20 Ethiopians for allegedly entering into the country illegally.

The police have also apprehended a Malawian national identified as Patrick Mshani, aged 36 of Ishalikira village from the area of Traditional Authority ( TA) Mwaulambia the district for aiding the foreigners.

The twenty were arrested at Lwaka hills in Kafola village in the district.



This follows the information police officers got from well-wishers.

It is said that after receiving the information, the police officers went to lwaka hills and searched the immigrants from the hills and managed to arrest 20 and one Malawian from where they were hiding.

The suspects will appear in court soon to answer case of illegal entry while the Malawian will answer case of aiding illegal immigrants.

Meanwhile, Police in district strongly warn people that anyone who will be found aiding or harbouring illegal immigrants will be brought to book as this interfere national security.

Court suspends Viola,Chingola’s 3 year sentence over 3.3 billion maize deal

Former National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) eputy Chief Executive Officer Gerald Viola and his co-accused Chrispin Chingola can now have all reasons to smile after court suspend their three year sentence in connection to the 3.3 billion maize deal at National Food Reserve Agency ( NFRA).

Principal Resident Magistrate Viva Nyimba handed the sentence suspension on Monday morning after convicting the two on Monday last week.



According to the presiding Magistrate, he took into consideration the fact that the convicts are first offenders and that they did not get any economic benefit from the crime.

He said the sentence suspension is strict on several conditions that include not to commit any offence of dishonesty within that period.

The court found Viola guilty on first charge of misuse of office while his co-convict, businessperson Chrispin Chingola, was found guilty on the count of influencing a public officer to misuse a public office.

The two were arrested by the ACB in October 2020 for unilaterally issuing to Missies Trading a Local Purchasing Order (LPO) number 6750 to supply 10 000 metric tonnes of maize to NFRA worth K3.3 billion for the business interest of Chingola of the said Missies Trading Company.

Police shoots armed robbers at Blantyre’s Chichiri shopping mall

In Blantyre,Malawi Police have this morning exchanged gun shots with armed robbers at Chichiri Shopping Mall.

Blantyre police Deputy publicist, Sargent Aubrey Singanyama, who has has confirmed of the development with local media a short while ago saying the number of suspects officers managed to shoot and apprehend the suspects.



Singanyama says the suspects were driving a black Honda Freed with fake registration plates.

The police officer did not disclose the exact number they have apprehended.

According to some verified sources in the Criminal Investigations Department, six suspects were shot in the legs to disorient and disarm them.
