Mabedi names 30-man squad ahead of Guinea encounter*

Flames mentor, Patrick Mabedi has released a 30-man provisional squad ahead of next month’s TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations 2023 qualifier against Guinea in Group D.

The game is slated for Bingu National Stadium on September 9.

Malawi’s female footballer Tabitha Chawinga nominated for ‘World African Woman in Sport’ awards

Malawian women’s football star Tabitha Chawinga has been nominated for World African Woman in Sport Awards by South Africa-based gsport.co.za.

The China-based Scorchers captain will be competing with Kenyan middle and long-distance athlete Faith Kipyego and South Africa Fifa referee Akhona Makalima.

In a message posted on the organisation website, www.gs.sport.co.za, Tabitha has been nominated for her exploits in Italy where she played for a season-long loan from China’s Wuhan Jianghan.

“Tabitha Chawinga, the Malawian Footballer, made history as the First African player to secure the 2023 Italian Serie A Women’s Golden Boot Award. Her remarkable achievement, driven by her 23 goals for Inter Milan Woman in the 2022/2023 season, showcases her prowess and dedication to the sport,” reads the statement in part.

Writing on her Facebook Page, Chawinga called for people to vote for her.

“Vote for Tabitha Chawinga as your favourite African Woman In Sport Award at www.gsport.co.za./voting ends until 31st August,” wrote Chawinga.

Tabitha Chawinga is a Malawian professional footballer who plays as a forward for Italian Serie A club Inter Milan, on loan from Chinese side Wuhan Jianghan University FC, and the Malawi women’s national team.

She began playing football at age five and played with boys until age 13 when she began playing for girls’ club, DD Sunshine in the capital city, Lilongwe.

Jappie Mhango proposed for DPP’s northern region vice president

Following the death of Goodall Gondwe who was the Northern Region vice president for Democratic Progressive Party (DPP),some party’s district governors’ in the region have expressed their wish that party president Pater Mutharika should appoint, Jappie Mhango to replace the late Gondwe.

Speaking to local media, one of the district governor’s in Nkhata Bay, Bishop Nkhata, said they proposed Mhango’s name following a meeting they had with DPP regional governor, Christopher Mzomera Ngwira on Wednesday.

Ngwira, who on Thursday night confirmed meeting district governors in the course of this week, said the purpose of the meetings was to console each other following the death of Gondwe, but refused to comment on his governor’s proposed candidate.

Stunned, Mhango, whose name has been suggested to take over the position said, he believes that the party is still mourning the death of Gondwe, but he cannot control the governor’s thoughts.

In his comment,political analyst Victor Chipofya has cautioned DPP against handpicking people for the job, observing, “The tendency has left an undesirable stain on party president, Mutharika.”

Gondwe died in Lilongwe on August 8, 2023, at the age of 86.

Chilima’s corruption case hearing adjourned to September 1

Hearing of a corruption case involving Vice-President Saulos Chilima which was scheduled to resume today Friday at the High Court in Lilongwe has been adjourned to September 1, 2023.

A Notice of Adjournment from the court dated August 22, 2023, which we have seen signed by the registrar and addressed to Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) and defence lawyers has not given reasons for the interruption.

During the last hearing on August 1, 2023, High Court Judge Redson Kapindu ordered ACB to within seven days make a submission and serve the court and defence relevant documents on their objection to make available certain documents.



ACB lawyer Victor Chiwala informed the court that the bureau has some documents ready while for others, they would “still need to request from other institutions.”

He also stressed that they will not share other demanded documents such as investigation reports as these contain privileged information.

During the sitting, the judge also ordered that Chilima’s passport should be handed over to President Lazarus Chakwera saying when travelling outside the country, the Veep does not need to seek authority from ACB.

Meanwhile, the ACB has come up with new charges against Chilima. Initially, the VP was accused of receiving a $280,000 bribe to assist Xaviar Limited to be awarded the food ration packs contract.

New particulars of the offences do not mention the $280,000 bribe instead accuse Chilima of demanding and receiving “unspecified amounts of money for himself” to influence a public officer to give his approval to the Malawi Police Service to enter into a contract with Xaviar Limited for the supply of food ration.

ACB arrested Chilima in November last year on allegations that among others, he received $250,000 from Zenith Sattar to influence procurement deals at Malawi Police Service(MPS).

MACRA ordered to vacate injunction against Multichoice Malawi

Minister of Information Moses Kunkuyu has asked the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) to vacate the injunction that was obtained against MultiChoice Malawi to effect price adjustments.

A letter that we have seen from the government says while government appreciates the independence of the regulatory body, it has become necessary for MACRA to seek direction from the ministry.

“I, therefore, directMacra to take immediate steps to restore the status quo prior to the time when it
obtained injunctive relief so that efforts to resolve the matter can take place in earnest and outside the yoke of litigation,” reads part of the order.

Speaking to 247 Malawi News, Kunkuyu confirmed issuing the order but refused to shed more light, arguing its an order to MACRA l.

“Its an order to MACRA and we expect MACRA to respect the order,” he said.

MACRA, through a court injunction, prohibited the satellite television service provider from hiking DSTV tariffs.

This did not down well with company, which eventually resolved to terminate its DSTV services in Malawi.

According to Multichoice, the court order made business impossible in the country, hence the decision to exit the market.

Meanwhile,John Kapito, Consumers Association of Malawi (CAMA) Executive Director, has commended government for the move.
