End of the road!Flames Cosafa Cup dream shuttered after loosing 3-0 to Lesotho in penalty shootout

Malawi national football team, ‘The Flames’ dream of winning the HollywoodBets Cosafa Cup came to on end on Friday following their 3-nil loss to Lesotho on post-match penalties after the game ended 1-all in regulation time.

Flames failed to take advantage of their numerical superiority at King Zwelithin Stadium as they failed to beat the very organized Lesotho side.

Lesotho took the lead in the 17th minute but Flames equalized just six minutes later through Chawanangwa Kaonga who scored from the spot after a had ball incident in the box.

Lesotho played the last 45 minutes with 10 men after one of their defenders was sent off following a foul on Chawanangwa Kaonga.

Kaonga had a chance to double Flames’ lead 11 minutes in the second half after he received a pass from Lanjesi Nkhoma but the Zanaco FC player shot wide in an unbelievable circumstances.

The match ended 1-all in 93 minutes and went straight into penalties where Chimwemwe Idana, Stanley Sanudi and Patrick Macheso had all their shots saved by the Lesotho goalkeeper Sekhwane Moerane who also scored the winning penalty for his team.

In a post match interview, Flames Coach Patrick Mabedi bemoaned missed opportunities by his side but praised his charges for a good performance at the tournament.

“I have to give credit to my players. They did their best and we struggled to penetrate Lesotho defence as they dug deep. We had opportunities too but we missed them. We were not composed enough. Sometimes you need to be patient and not be rushing. But all in all we did all we could. It just wasn’t our day,” said Mabedi.

Despite the loss, Flames midfielder Chimwemwe Idana was named player of the match.

The win has taken Lesotho to their first Cosafa Cup final after 23 years and they will face the winner between South Africa and Zambia in the Final which will be played on Sunday.

NBM gives security cameras to BT Police

National Bank of Malawi (NBM) Plc has donated five security cameras worth K8.1 million to Blantyre Police as they plan to enhance security in the city.

Earlier this year, Blantyre Police launched an initiative to install surveillance cameras in Blantyre City.

Speaking during the handover ceremony at the bank’s head office in Blantyre on Wednesday, NBM Chief Financial Officer, Masauko Katsala said the Bank is geared to collaborate more with the Malawi Police Service (MPS) to help them carry out their duties effectively.

”As ‘The Bank of the Nation’ we are very much aware that security and peace is one of the prerequisites for conducting business, so, we cannot run business effectively or successfully if there is no security and peace, therefore security comes as a priority,” said Katsala.

Blantyre Police Officer-in-Charge, Deputy Commissioner of Police Obrey Nyirenda expressed gratitude to NBM for the donation saying it will go a long way towards the drive of combating crime in the city.

“We are moving in the right direction though we haven’t yet installed the CCTV cameras in Blantyre CBD, we have procured and secured some of the gadgets, so as we are now receiving this donation we know that our drive towards crime and traffic management will be done in a manner that we want it to be to make Blantyre a secure city,” said Nyirenda.

He however assured residents that cameras will not be used to infringe on people’s rights but for security surveillance purposes only.

Blantyre Police plans to plant about 50 cameras in the city to monitor every hotspot area rolling out in the next two months.

Chakwera Govt building 70 houses for Chiefs

Investigations which this publication has done has revealed that President Dr Lazarus Chakwera since ascending into power has earmarked a project aimed at providing decent houses for chiefs.

This was done after taking into account roles which chiefs provide in the country.
Chiefs play critical role in the implementation of development projects in the country.

Chakwera is constructing 70 houses across the country.

As earlier said, the project is aimed at constructing and rehabilitating chief’s houses and offices in order to provide the chiefs with a secure and decent place to live and work.

The outcome of the project is to Enhance service delivery to the local citizens by the chiefs, improved access to basic services and resources in the village and enhanced decency of local chiefs.

The project started in July 2021 and its life span ends in March 2026.

Our investigations into the project have revealed that maintenance Paramount chief Mbelwa, Gomani and Senior Chief Malemia in Nsanje have been completed.

Despite the project facing two challenges such as inflation and volatile economic conditions authorities believe this project will be completed.

Blue Eagles suspends their captain Schumacher Kuwali

Blue Eagle Football club has suspended their captain Schumacher Kuwali for what the team’s executive has described as bad conduct.

According to a letter signed by the team’s chairperson Alex Simenti, the Malawi Police side has suspended the player for his bad conduct towards his fellow players and the Technical Panel.

The club has further explained that the players will not be playing for the club until further notice.

DPP civil war gears up as thousands of supporters to throng Page House on 26 July

Angry Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) after becoming furious with what is happening in their party have agreed to besiege Page House where the two camps will face each other.

This follows reports that two major camps have emerged in the party.

These camps include those endorsing the return of Peter Mutharika and those refusing to endorse Mutharika.

The argument of those refusing to endorse Mutharika is that he is too frail and old to run the affairs of the party.



While the argument of those endorsing Mutharika is that he did well during his tenure of office and that they want him to continue looting state coffers.

According to the audio advert in circulation all DPP members are being asked to converge at Page House to meet those causing havoc and confusion within the party.

It is not known how Madala team will react to this development but besieging Mutharika House will be a sign of real fight into the struggle.
