President Chakwera mourns JZU Tembo

Malawi Leader President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera says he is deeply concerned over the demise of Former Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President John Zenus Ungapake Tembo.

Tembo died earlier Wednesday following a diabetic attack. In a statement, soon after the sad news, Chakwera says Tembo was a pillar in the history of Malawi Politics.

“The First Lady and I are deeply saddened by the passing of Rt. Hon. Dr. John Zenus Ungapake Tembo, a pillar in the history of Malawian politics, ” reads the statement in part.

Chakwera says Rt. Hon. Dr. JZU Tembo had extensive experience as a cabinet member, with his contributions to the country spanning six decades, including his role as the first Malawian Minister of Finance and Governor of the Reserve Bank.

The president says Tembo served as a Member of Parliament from 1961 to 2014, playing a pivotal role in the establishment and governance of numerous successful institutions in the country.

Chakwera says his unwavering commitment to the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and his instrumental role in facilitating a democratic transfer of power
within the party in 2013 will forever be etched in the nation’s political history.

“He stood as a pillar of strength during challenging times, ensuring that the MCP remained a formidable force, even in the face of adversity,” reads the statement.

The statement further recounts that his wisdom transcended generations and his unwavering passion for the nation and that his legacy is one of resilience, dedication and unparalleled knowledge.

“We will, therefore, remember Rt. Hon. Dr. John Tembo not only as a political stalwart but also as a source of inspiration and a repository of knowledge, ” President Chakwera says.

Death has been confirmed of veteran politician and former Leader of Opposition John Zenus Ungapake Tembo.

Tembo, 91; has died while receiving medical treatment at Lilongwe City Clinic in Lilongwe.

Both Tembo’s son, John Tembo Jnr and MCP Spokesperson Ezekiel Ching’oma have confirmed the death.

Tembo once served as Reserve Bank of Malawi(RBM) Governor and cabinet minister in the Kamuzu Banda administration.

Born on September 14, 1932, he also served as Member of Parliament for Dedza South Constituency.

Again, Tembo was the party’s torchbearer during the 2004 and 2009 presidential elections and retired from active politics in 2013.

Meanwhile, different people are reacting to Tembo’s passing and sharing their tributes.

CapeStars spirits partner ‘Zeze & Dorothy’

Malawi’s trending celebrity couple of Zeze Kingston and Dorothy Shonga popularly called ‘The Kingstons’ have signed a one-year deal with HS Winehouse Beverages and Hospitality who are the producers of the CapeStars spirits.


One of the Directors of MH Winehouse and Beverage, Darlington Ndasauka said the partnership will help to grow the two brands in Malawi and beyond.

“We are new, but we aim to go as far as we can. The same goes to The Kingstons. They are a well-known brand which will keep growing and we want to grow with them,” he said.



Speaking on behalf of the Kingstons, Shonga said the partnership will push the the two brands and that CapeStars will strive to export its brand inorder to help in solving Forex shortage issue.

The first activity for the two brands is the Jam Next Door which has been organized in Mangochi this weekend as part of celebrating Tourism month.

The activities will start on Friday, and will end of Sunday at Cape Maclear.

Fam shifts Mafco, KB game to Dedza

The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has announced that the Airtel Top 8 fixture between Mafco FC and Kamuzu Barracks will be played at Dedza Stadium not Chitowe Stadium as earlier communicated.



FAM Competitions and Communications Director Gomezgani Zakazaka said the change has been made because Chitowe Stadium will not be available for the game which will be played on Sunday 1st October.

The winner of this year’s Airtel top 8 cup will receive K17 million and all participating teams will pocket a subvention of 1 million each.

Ex-MCP President John Tembo hospitalized

Former Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President John Zenasi Ungapake Tembo has been in hospital in Lilongwe for a week now.

Tembo,91, is admitted in an unnamed hospital in the capital city.

His son, John Tembo Jnr, told the local media on Tuesday that Tembo was rushed to hospital on Monday last week and he is still receiving treatment.

According to Tembo Jnr, his father is getting treatment for dehydration and pneumonia.

Tembo also got an operation on his foot due to his diabetic condition.

Tembo Jnr has since asked Malawians to pray for his father.

John Zenasi Ungapake Tembo served as Reserve Bank of Malawi Governor as well as cabinet minister in the Kamuzu Banda administration.

He also served as Member of Parliament for Dedza South Constituency.

After MCP became an opposition party, he led the party to elections as its presidential candidate in 2004 and 2009 before leaving politics in 2013.
