MCCCI dares ministry on alcohol tax reduction

The Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commence and Industry (MCCCI) has appealed to the Ministry of Finance to consider the reduction of tax on alcohol that has less than 15 percent alcoholic percentage.

Speaking during a pre-budget consultation meeting held in Blantyre on Monday January 9,2023, MCCCI Chief Executive Director Chancellor Kaferapanjira said alcohol manufacturing companies are employing many people in the country especially the youth.

” Let’s consider the reduction of taxes these alcohol manufacturing companies are paying. They should be reduced so as for them to continue their businesses, ” he appealed.

Kaferapanjira said if government can put tax at 3 percent from the current 50 percent, many unemployed youth can have opportunity to be employed thereby, contributing to the growth of the county’s economy.

At the meeting, the MCCCI boss also asked government to ban importation of motor vehicles older than 10 years as they consume a lot of spare parts which are among top 10 imports.

UDF to fire Atupele Muluzi from the party for sponsoring friends of Atupele groupings

Former recent past president of the United Democratic Front (UDF) Atupele Muluzi risk expulsion from the party which his father found in the early 90s.

UDF has released a statement stopping young Muluzi from sponsoring hooligans in the name of Friends of Atupele.

In a statement jointly signed by UDF Publicity secretary Yusuf Mwawa and the Party Secretary General Kandi Padambo the party has blocked these hooligans from continuing with making sponsored proclamation in the name of UDF.



“We call upon all party leaders mermbers and supporters to always respect the party
constitution, structures and the party leadership at all times in order to preserve the legacy of our beloved party and to avoid disciplinary action which includes expulsion
from the party,” reads the statement.

The Statement further reads: “The party hierarchy has observed and noted with regret the use of the name of our
immediate past President Rt. Hon Atupele Muluzi and party structures and emblems
by an unapproved grouping calling itself Friends of Atupele Muluzi. Right Honourable is still a bonafide member of the United Democratic Front who has always encouraged compliance with the party constitution, rules and code of conduct.

“The Friends of Atupele Muluzi grouping is creating the impression that it is being supported by Rt. Hon Atupele Muluzi which we would like to believe cannot be true.”

According to the statement the party hugely distance itself from the Friends of Atupele Muluzi grouping as it is blatantly creating a perception of a paralel structure within the ranks and files of party membership.

According to the statement Unitied Democratic Front has unified structures under the leadership of Hon Lilian Patel who constitutionally took over from Rt Hon. Atupele Muluzi.

The party has made it clear that using the name of party members and structures to advance personal agendas, obstructive to the interests and effectiveness
of the party, is breaching the party consitution and a breach of party discpline.

Sad news as 10-year-old boy drowns in Nakokote dam in Mangochi

A 10-year-old boy identified as Bruno Chinziri has died after drowning in Nalikokote Dam in Mangochi where he went to swim with his friends.

According to Mangochi Police Station Public Relations officer, Amina Tepani Daudi, the incident happened yesterday when the father of the deceased left his son playing with his three friends at home and went to attend a church meeting.



“It is reported that Chinziri and friends decided to go to the said dam without their parents’ knowledge.

” The four started swimming and Chinziri went to a deeper part where he drowned,” said Daudi.

She added his body was later found floating in the dam after the friends reported the incident to their parents.

Postmortem conducted at Koche Health Centre in the district indicated that death was due suffocation.

Late Chinziri hailed from Maliko Village, Senior Chief Mponda in Mangochi District.

TNM reduces Voice-PayGo prices by 10%

As part of its continued efforts to improve affordability of telecommunication in the country, Telekom Networks Malawi ( TNM) plc has reduced downwards the prices of its Voice-PayGo and On net SMS services by 10 percent and 17 percent respectively .

According to a statement, the county’s mobile network and ICT provider says the new prices are effective January 4,2023.

The company says it has also revised Patsetse data bundles , by allowing the customers to use the full speed of the selected bundle until 100 percent exhaustion of their bundles volume.

“The product will no longer be unlimited with a fair Usage Policy(FUP) but internet access will be terminated after exhaustion of the allocated volume” reads part of the statement the company has released.

Established in 1995, TNM the oldest telecommunications company in the Malawi.

The company has a total network of 380 base station sites and transmission sites across the country.

Chikoti Chirwa to join Mozambique’s Costa do Sol

Zomba-based Red Lions FC have announced that their captain Chikoti Chirwa is set to leave the country for Mozambique to join Costa do Sol on an outright season long deal.

In a statement in our possession, the team’s general secretary Francis Chalulu says Chirwa was supposed to be in Mozambique by January 3, 2023 but it has been delayed because the club is waiting for an approval from Malawi Defence Force (MDF) Headquarters.

“We wrote a letter to the higher authorities for clearance since he is also a serving soldier in the Malawi Defence Force.

“Since we were on festive season holidays and just resumed work on Wednesday 4th January, we have the hope that the impending departure by the player will be given a seal of approval, ” says Chalulu in a statement.

This is another opportunity for the player who saw his deal with Polokwane City flop in January, 2021.

Born on March 9 1992, Chikoti Chirwa is a Malawian footballer who plays as a defensive midfielder for Red Lions and the Malawi national team.

He was included in Malawi’s squad for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
