President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has urged voters in Chitipa District to cast their votes for him and the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) to ensure that development continues both in Chitipa and across Malawi.

Speaking at Chitipa Boma during a whistle-stop tour ahead of the September 16 General Election, President Chakwera reflected on the challenges faced during his first term, noting that despite numerous natural disasters, the government remained committed to national development.

He emphasized that his administration has implemented many developmental projects throughout the country, utilizing modern technology to build lasting infrastructure.

Among the projects highlighted were durable roads, railway systems, schools, and hospitals, including the Nthalire Community Hospital, which was officially inaugurated during the visit.

MCP Secretary General and Minister of Local Government and National Unity, Richard Chimwendo Banda, praised President Chakwera for spending a night in Chitipa, highlighting that the President’s stay boosted local business, with accommodation facilities fully booked and an increase in money circulation within the district.

Regarding sports infrastructure, Chimwendo Banda revealed that President Chakwera had directed that the terraces at Chitipa Stadium be completed, which will enable Chitipa United Football Club to host home games.

Senior Chief Mwabulambya expressed gratitude to the President, applauding him for his humility in becoming the first sitting President to spend a night in Chitipa.

President Chakwera’s visit underscored his commitment to inclusive development and his efforts to strengthen ties with local communities ahead of the general elections.

MRA empowers Southern Region journalists with digital tax knowledge

Blantyre was the hub of a major capacity-building drive this week as the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) conducted an intensive training workshop for journalists from the Southern Region, focusing on its flagship digital service, Msonkho Online.

The platform, designed to allow taxpayers to file returns and make payments electronically, is at the heart of MRA’s modernization strategy.

Officials say it is aimed at reducing queues at tax offices, cutting processing times, and curbing errors that often arise with manual filing.

Speaking at the opening, MRA officials emphasized that empowering the media with in-depth knowledge about Msonkho Online will lead to clearer, fact-based reporting that demystifies tax processes for the public.

“The media is a bridge between us and the people. If they understand the system well, they can help spread accurate information and encourage voluntary compliance,” said one MRA spokesperson.

The training was supported by GIZ Malawi through its Strengthening Public Financial and Economic Management (PFEM–Tikuze Malawi) project, which works to enhance transparency, accountability, and efficiency in public finance systems.

The partnership, according to MRA, reflects a shared vision of building a culture of tax compliance as a foundation for national development.

Participants engaged in hands-on sessions, navigating the Msonkho Online interface, troubleshooting common challenges, and exploring ways to integrate tax-related content into news coverage.

The workshop also touched on broader topics such as the link between tax revenue and public service delivery, and the role of investigative journalism in safeguarding fiscal accountability.

Charismatic Redeemed Ministries International (CRMI) has urged people in the country to engage in consistent prayer sessions ahead of the September 16 general election.

The father and founder of CRMI, Archbishop Dr. Mark Kambalazaza, made these remarks on Monday in Blantyre when the church briefed journalists on its preparations for the church’s 25th anniversary celebration, slated for September 5 to7 at Kamuzu Stadium in the city.

“We are pleased to announce that our church has completed 25 years since its establishment in 2000. We hereby invite all media to come and celebrate with us,”

“at the same time, we urge all people to engage in consistent prayers as the country prepares to hold general elections in the same month. We need to seek God’s intervention for a God-fearing leadership selection through fair and credible polls.” he said.

Dr. Kambalazaza also shared a brief background of his first encounter with the living Jesus, from which the theme of the church is rooted. “CRMI’s vision is ‘Preaching the Living Jesus and the Holy Spirit in Readiness for Rapture.’

“This theme depicts my experience when I fell ill for 11 years, from 1980 to 1991, until the Lord Jesus intervened miraculously by bringing me back to life after I died. Hence, the celebration and the theme, as I had promised God to spread the Gospel around the world,” explained Dr. Kambalazaza.

He further stated that to express his heartfelt appreciation to those who have stood with him over the past 25 years, he will host the silver jubilee together with Bishop Ireen Kambalazaza (his wife) and will be joined by Apostle Dr. Madalitso Mbewe of Cavalry Family Church from Malawi, Apostle Stanys Moliki from South Africa, Bishop Elizabeth Vareen from the United States of America, and Apostle Frederick Shumba from Zimbabwe.

Today, CRMI has over 450 church centers, including many outstations in Malawi, with international branches in the Republic of South Africa, Ireland, Mozambique, and the United States of America.

District Social Welfare Officer for Dowa Jonathan Bonongwe, has advised school going children particularly girls to take care of their lives observing that not all visitors coming to work in the district are good, some are bad and rotten apples.

Bonomgwe said the M1 Road construction project and construction of a Tollgate at Mnkhamanga area is a welcome development to the district as they have attracted many people including construction workers renting in houses.

He said some of these workers are proposing young girls advising them to take the Camp site for the road development project and not as a tourist attraction centre saying there are laws that are protecting girl child for them to be in schools.

Speaking during commemoration of the district’s Day of African Child held at Mnkhamanga school in the Area of Traditional Authority Mponela in the district, Bonongwe advised parents and guardians to sit down with their children to care for themselves.

Bonongwe warned these parents and guardians that if they don’t care of their children, the area will have many children without fathers observing that these children will not go school thereby increasing the number of out of school children.

He encouraged school going girls that if they are proposed for love by these workers, they should report to their parents, guardians, chiefs, teachers, church leaders, and police to make sure that they are safeguarded from early pregnancies and bearing children without fathers.

“We all have a duty to safeguard girl child by reporting approaches for love by these contractors for them to be always in school,’ said Bonongwe.

He warned school going girls that if they stay quiet without reporting issues affecting them to the relevant authorities, their future will be destroyed and they will not be leaders of today and tomorrow in the development of their areas, communities, the district, and as a country as a whole.

Day of African Child was set to be commemorated on the 16th June of every year to honor black school children that were massacred in 1976 by the white minority rule of the apartheid government in South Africa when they were fighting of equal education rights.

The national commemoration of this day was held at the Bingu International Conference Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe celebrating the child by allowing them to have the platform to communicate to the duty bearers on the rights of children in education.

Dowa conducted the Day of African Child as a replica of the same function which was held at the BICC under the theme Planning and Budgeting the children’s rights,”

MCP Running Mate Vitumbiko Mumba defends self-employment as legitimate job creation

By Burnett Munthali

Vitumbiko Mumba, the running mate of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), has addressed ongoing debates about the nature of employment in Malawi.

In a recent post, Mumba challenged the notion that self-employment should not be considered a form of employment, calling such a view rudimentary.

He illustrated his point by describing a common scenario where someone takes a loan from the National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF) or a bank to purchase a motorbike for use as a transportation business.

According to Mumba, this person is clearly earning a living through this enterprise, and therefore, it qualifies as a legitimate job.

He further explained that while the government cannot employ every citizen, it plays a crucial role in creating an enabling environment for the growth of diverse industries.

These industries, in turn, generate employment opportunities across various sectors, including self-employment and small businesses.

Mumba highlighted that under President Lazarus Chakwera’s leadership, funding to NEEF was increased to empower Malawians to start and grow businesses, thus boosting job creation.

He criticized those who dismiss jobs created through NEEF loans as ridiculous, emphasizing that such jobs are vital components of the nation’s economic development.

Mumba concluded by saying that expecting the MCP to apologize for recognizing this truth is futile, likening it to chasing the wind.

He encouraged followers to watch a clip in which he explains the second pillar of the MCP Manifesto, which focuses on job creation.
