Speaking during the programme’s launch in Lilongwe on Tuesday, GIZ Team Leader Theresa Rooney said the initiative aims to strengthen Entrepreneurial Support Organisations (ESOs) such as mHub and Umodzi Consulting, which provide gender-responsive and environmentally sustainable business services.

Rooney explained that the programme brings together over 500 participants including women entrepreneurs, ESOs, development partners, and government representatives to promote business resilience, facilitate access to finance, and foster green growth.

“We are investing in women because their businesses are key drivers of inclusive economic development and sustainable growth across Africa,” said Rooney.

On her part, Principal Enterprises Development Officer in the Ministry of Industrialisation, Business, Trade and Tourism,Lisbert Kumatso, applauded the initiative, describing it as a game-changer for Malawi’s women entrepreneurs.

“Through such incubation programmes, we expect to see more resilient women-led enterprises that can inspire others and contribute significantly to national development,” she said.

Kumatso added that the government continues to strengthen policies that promote women’s participation in business, citing the SME Order of 2020, which grants small and medium enterprises preferential treatment in public procurement.

The IYBA – Women Entrepreneurship for Africa programme is co-financed by the European Union, the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS), and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

It is being implemented in Malawi, Mozambique, Cameroon, Kenya, Senegal, Tanzania, Togo, and Uganda.

A 25-year-old man identified as Frazer Zumba, popularly known by his social media alias Peter Donda-Frey, has been arrested by Lilongwe Cybercrime detectives for allegedly scamming unsuspecting individuals and companies through fake emails in which he posed as a Procurement Officer for a non-governmental organization, Aid International Development.

Zumba, who hails from Vinjenje Village under Traditional Authority Malengachanzi in Nkhotakota District, reportedly used fraudulent correspondence to deceive business owners and obtain expensive electronic items worth over K12.9 million.

According to police reports, the suspect contacted Total Electronics at Gateway Mall in Lilongwe, claiming to represent Aid International Development. Through this deception, he managed to collect several high-value goods, including an iPhone 16 Pro Max, a 75-inch Samsung TV and an electric kettle.

After realizing that Cybercrime detectives had launched an investigation into his activities, Zumba swiftly deleted his Peter Donda Facebook page, where he had been running several suspicious promotional and procurement posts. However, the move came too late, as investigators had already traced his digital footprint.

Police say the suspect was tracked through coordinated cyber operations that involved tracing email addresses, phone numbers and delivery patterns linked to his fraudulent transactions.

“He presented himself as a procurement officer from a reputable aid organization, which gave him credibility to unsuspecting victims. His actions have caused significant financial losses to several business entities,” said a police source familiar with the investigation.

Zumba is currently in police custody and is expected to appear before court soon to answer charges of fraud other than false pretenses.

Meanwhile, police have urged the public, especially business owners, to exercise caution when handling large online transactions or requests from unfamiliar individuals claiming to represent known institutions.

The arrest highlights the growing challenge of cyber fraud in Malawi, where criminals are increasingly exploiting digital platforms to target victims with sophisticated scams disguised as legitimate deals.

Protests Erupt Across Tanzania Amid Tense Voting Process

By Rahim Abdul

Tensions are running high in Tanzania as angry citizens have taken to the streets in several regions while voting continues in what observers describe as a chaotic and heavily disputed process.

Protesters are expressing outrage over what opposition parties and human rights activists have condemned as increasing repression by President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration. Reports suggest that opposition leaders have faced arrests, intimidation and severe restrictions on political activities in the weeks leading up to the polls.

Several polling stations have reportedly been disrupted with some voters prevented from casting their ballots due to ongoing demonstrations. Witnesses say that in certain areas, security forces have been deployed to disperse crowds using tear gas, leading to injuries and heightened tensions.

Local media outlets and online platforms are flooded with footage and accounts of clashes between protesters and police. Some citizens claim that ballot materials have been tampered with further deepening fears of electoral manipulation.

Opposition parties have accused the ruling party of using state machinery to silence dissent and rig the outcome, calling for an immediate suspension of the vote until transparency can be guaranteed.

Meanwhile, the government has defended its actions, saying the elections are proceeding peacefully in most areas and accusing the opposition of inciting violence for political gain.

International observers are closely monitoring the situation, with regional organizations urging calm and calling on authorities to respect the democratic process and human rights.

As the situation develops, Tanzanians remain divided some hopeful for reform, others fearful that the unrest marks a dangerous setback for the country’s democracy.

Analysts warn that the outcome of this election could have lasting consequences on Tanzania’s political stability and its image as one of the more peaceful nations in the region.
