By McLloyd Kudzingo

Mighty Mukuru Wanderers left it late to secure a 2-nil victory over Mpondas United on Thursday afternoon at Balaka Stadium.

The Mangochi outfit looked impregnable until the last sixteen minutes when substitutes Vincent Nyangulu and Chiukepo Msowoya got their names on the scoresheet to help the Lali Lubani boys progress into the round of 16 of the FDH Bank Cup.

Both sides featured most of their regular players with Wanderers relying on Christopher Kumwembe and Gaddie Chirwa in front while Mpondas trusted Hassan Sanudi and Hassam Wasi to cause the biggest upset in the tournament.

The most part of the first half was played almost exclusively in Mpondas United’s half with the Nomads seeking to get an early lead but Mpondas proved to be too good in defense with goalkeeper Rashid Hassan producing brilliant saves.

The second half saw, the Nomads making a number of substitutions, bringing in the fresh legs of Misheck Botomani, Chiukepo Msowoya and Vincent Nyangulu.

The super league outfit continued to create a number of scoring opportunities in the second half but were still failing to hit the back of the net.

Just when some fans started fearing for yet another big embarrassment for the Nomads, Nyangulu had other thoughts as he broke the deadlock in the 74th minute with a beautiful finish after an assist by Botomani.

Chiukepo Msowoya doubled the lead for Wanderers in the added time with a beautiful header after a well taken corner kick by his captain Stanley Sanudi.

In other round of 32 matches played on Thursday, Silver Strikers thumped Ntaja United 5-0 in a match that took place at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.

Adiel Kaduya claimed a brace as Atusaye Nyondo, Stain Davie and Chimwemwe Idana scored a goal each for the central bankers.

Elsewhere, Zikani Sichinga scored a hat-trick to help Mafco FC beat Ekwendeni Hardnockers 4-2 at Chitowe Stadium.

The other goal for the Salima-based soldiers came from Peter Kasonga while Cyrus Msiska and Tymon Gomeka were on target for Hardnockers.

By Cedric Nkungula

President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has told National Intelligence Service (NIS) Complaints Tribunal to always abide by ethical principles, refraining from abusing their power or politicizing their organization but prioritize quality service to the nation of Malawi.

Chakwera made the remarks on Thursday 22nd June 2023 when he officiated the inauguration ceremony of the first – ever National Intelligence Service Complaints Tribunal at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe.

In his remarks, the Malawi leader said he has confidence in the credentials and expertise of the office bearers to deliver quality service to Malawians.

“It is my belief that this diverse
composition will foster a thorough and well – rounded
examination of complaints, enhancing transparency,
independence and the credibility of its decisions. I have utmost faith in your capabilities, and I am confident that you will discharge your duties with
competence and integrity,” emphasized the president.

“So my advice to you is to simply do the task you have been given today, to do it well, to do it diligently, to do it passionately and to do it for the good of the country. And I thank you for accepting this appointment.

He highlighted that the establishment of the Complaints Tribunal marks a significant milestone in the history of Malawi.

The NIS Complaints Tribunal is a legally recognized entity that has been established with the sole purpose of scrutinizing and resolving issues pertaining to the operations and conduct of the NIS and its personnel.

This tribunal was brought into existence under the provisions of the National Intelligence Service Act (2017) (Sections 26 to 35), which authorizes it to probe complaints lodged against the NIS and its staff.

Despite having received assent earlier, the NIS Act (2017) only became operational on 8th February 2021, and the establishment of this tribunal serves as a significant step towards ensuring accountability and transparency within the NIS.

They have now joined musicians Anthony Dumba, Wendy Harawa, Deborah Debbie Ntopa and Edgar Kachere who were elected on Tuesday during the first part of the two-day meeting.

Initially, there was resistance from the Rights Holder Associations who proposed for the elections to be removed from the agenda for COSOMA secretariat to address issues contained in a petition they were served with last week.

But after a heated debate, the associations gave in and proceeded with the elections albeit with some conditions.

One of the top Tobacco buying companies, Alliance One Tobacco in collaboration with its sister company Pyxus Agriculture Limited, has announced increasing the sponsorship for the Chess School Project to over K12 million.

The project is being implemented by the Chess Association of Malawi (CHESSAM) in eight rural primary schools in the central region.

CHESSAM in collaboration with the two companies launched the initiative some two years ago to the tune of K2.1 million as a pilot initiative in two primary schools in Dowa.

Last year, the two companies increased their sponsorship to around K6 million which consequently increased the number of participating schools to six.

In his remarks, Alliance One Malawi corporate affairs manager Fran Malila said her company in collaboration with Pyxus Agriculture decided to increase the financial sponsorship of the project to K12 million because chess has the potential of helping kids to do better in class through improved concentration and decision making.

Said Malila:“We have committed ourselves to continue supporting Chessam because our aim is to eradicate the probability of children being involved in child labour in tobacco growing areas, especially after school hours. We therefore believe that playing chess after their classes will not only improve their skills of the game, but also improve their problem solving prowess, critical thinking as well as decision making in their daily endeavors.”

Chess is a board game for two players, called White and Black, each controlling an army of chess pieces in their color, with the objective to checkmate the opponent’s king.

It is sometimes called international chess or Western chess to distinguish it from related games, such as xiangqi (Chinese chess) and shogi (Japanese chess).

The recorded history of chess goes back at least to the emergence of a similar game, chaturanga, in the seventh century in India.

Today, chess is one of the world’s most popular games, played by millions of people worldwide.
