Chakwera calls for unity of purpose

President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has reiterated the need for all Malawians to unite in order to develop the country.

The President made the remarks on Saturday when he stopped over at Lunzu Trading Centre in Blantyre, on his way back to Lilongwe after completing developmental engagements in the Southern Region.

“I would like to plead with you; we are all Malawians, it does not matter what we differ in, whether we hold different creeds or political aspirations. As long as we are Malawians, we are all under one Malawian flag, as such, we are all called to unite with one purpose to develop our country,” said Chakwera.



The President, therefore, asked Malawians not to hold grudges, but advocate for love, saying the country can only develop if Malawians work as one.

The President said he is aware of the challenges Malawians were going through hence an assurance of government’s measures to lessen the impact such as the National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF) loans where all Malawians are eligible to benefit.

During the period the President was in the Southern Region, he handover of houses for police officers in Mangochi, launched the National Youth Service in Neno, opened the National Data Centre, hosted the National Anti-corruption conference and opened the 32nd Malawi International Trade Fair in Blantyre.

Timothy Mtambo receives Award for brevity in the fight for Electoral Justice

The Minister of National Unity, Timothy Mtambo has been recognised with an award for the role he played in mobilizing the whole nation around a cause and fight against electoral injustice. DISCOM communications, an organisation with huge global higher education access network presented the award to Mtambo during an event that took place at Sunbird Capital Hotel in Lilongwe on Friday.

Mtambo was presented the award at the event for Educational information Dissemination whose theme this year was “New Thinking, New Malawi Education is the key“ The award is to honour the fearless, influential and charismatic leadership in the manner Mtambo managed to mobilize the whole nation around a cause and fight against electoral injustice. The award ceremony should have taken place 2020 and 2021 but was postponed due to Covid 19

The organization, DISCOM Communications is a reputable Malawian based organisation with a huge global network which links Malawians to access higher education in any country of their choice.

In a Nomination Statement from Tionge Matela Msiska of Skillways , it read “ Like any other human being, Comrade Hon. Timothy Mtambo too is different things to different people – for better or for bitter, for fame or for fate. but, to those of us who have tasted the oil of his character, he is the embodiment of the very things that matter in excellent leadership for a transformed society”

The statement described Mtambo as More than just a statesman, but also a mentor and a family man whose life’s example is a lamp on the hills for all of us to see

Msiska statement went further to say” This award is a reminder for you and me that the cost we must pay for a Malawi of our dreams is not for one person to bear. Rather, it’s a load for each one of us to dare, knowing we have a debt to pay generations to come. Yes, we must not forget we owe our children a sunshine of hope and dignity. That’s why Malawi needs more leaders like Comrade Hon. Timothy Mtambo, a family man and a mentor, full of bravery like a lion in fighting injustice – yet humble enough like a sheep in service and sacrifice for the good of country”

While receiving the prestigious award, Cde Hon Mtambo, said that he was humbled and overwhelmed by the recognition and dedicated the award to God, who saved him during his toughest dark hours, to his family who stood with him and to the people of Malawi who believed in the cause and successfully defended their hard-earned democracy. He concluded that “aluta continua for the betterment of our great Republic”.

Mtambo successfully led millions of Malawians to streets to demanding Electoral Justice and accountability after a fraudulent 2019 elections

Senior Chief Mkanda no more

Tributes are pouring in following the death of Senior Chief Mkanda of Mchinji district.

According to communication released by the Spokesperson in the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development Anjoya Mwaza, Mkanda died on Friday evening July 29,2022 at Kamuzu Central Hospital ( KCH) in Lilongwe after short illness.

Born Ackim Tumizani Phiri on April 12, 1930, late Senior Chief Mkanda was installed Traditional Authority ( T.A) Mkanda in 2000 by fomer Malawi leader Bakili Muluzi.

In 2014, he was elevated to Senior Chief Mkanda by former Malawi’s first female President Joyce Banda.

The burial ceremony of late Senior Chief Mkanda will be announced later.

Old Mutual Investment Group Limited (OMIG) a subsidiary of Old Mutual (Malawi) Limited on Thursday July 28 2022, hosted a live webinar discussion with its customers at Sun Bird Mount Soche Hotel in Blantyre themed ‘Navigating Market Volatility to Optimize Investment Outcomes’

The Webinar focused on how to negotiate market turbulence to maximize investment outcomes among the company’s customers.

During the webinar, experts within the asset management firm were drawn to share insights and on the other hand the customers had a chance to ask the panelists questions in an interactive way for further clarification where the had a challenge of understanding.



One of the key points said during the discussions was that the company has gave an assurance to the customers that it is doing everything possible to take its attention to the environmental circumstances that are on the market so as to maximize investment outcomes.

According to the experts, Climate Change and Inflation are some of the major problems that have greatly affected their services market.

Speaking after the event, Managing Director for OMIG, Mark Mikwamba said what it is needed most in time like this is to be more resilient and focus on investment .

Mikwamba added that there is also need to look on the capabilities in terms of investment alternatives as well as long term investments because every opportunity has got its challenges.

“As you know, the world is going through volatile environment, and our customers have been asking on what we are doing locally to promote and manage the investment.

” So the today’s engagement is give them assurance that we are paying attention to the environment and we have their interest at heart so that we can help them to rich their objectives,” Mikwamba attributed

On his part, The company’s property General Manager Damien Kafoteka said as the world is going through turbulence in terms of inflation as well as the Russia- Ukraine war, there is need to navigate markets.

He said “What we are saying is that at Old Mutual we have different asset classes like property, equity as well as the newly introduced alternative investments.

“All we are saying is that, lets remain diversifying in all what we are investing.

” Let’s put much focus on alternative investment as this will help us to move away from the traditional ways of investing thereby have time to look at agricultural as well as infrastructural investment.

At Old Mutual, qe do this for the benefit of our clients so that they should be engaged in diversification of their investment in order to maximize outcomes.”

One of Old Mutual customers Innoncecia Chirombo who is a Principal Of at Christian Health Association of Malawi (CHAM) pension fund commended the gesture saying the engagement was helpful as it strengthened their unity as customers with the company.

Chirimbo said the webinar enlightened them with much full knowledge in terms of other new investments that have arised at the company.

“In terms of alternative investments, it is now high time that we should move from the traditional investment and venture into these alternative investments.

“As for us at CHAM pension fund, we have enough money to venture into that and to develop this country,” she said.

The webinar was also being participated via online platforms with the very same interactivity engagement from all the stakeholders.

Foreign Minister Nancy Tembo to engage Diaspora Malawians on Saturday

The Minister of Foreign Affairs Hon Nancy Tembo will this coming Saturday, the 30th of July engage in an interface with Malawians who are living in the diaspora. This has been arranged to enable the Minister hear first hand some of the challenges the diaspora face over various issues under her Ministry.

The Event which will be done using Online Platform Zoom will start at 7pm Malawi Time . It has been facilitated by the group Malawi Congress Party Diaspora Network (MCPDN). Speaking to 247Malawi ,the Vice Chairperson of the group, Canadian based George Limbani Phiri called on all Malawians in the diaspora to join In, highlighting the event is open to all Malawians in the Diaspora regardless of Political affiliation

Hon Nancy Tembo to engage the diaspora

Among some of the issues to be discussed include; the Need to generate awareness and visibility of the critical role migrants and Diasporas play in the sustainable development of their countries of origin and destination, beyond remittances. (United Nations – Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration). The Clarification on how the Malawi Government in general and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in particular has set out initiatives that will ensure that the Diaspora communities and associations will collaborate in integrating the Diaspora into the national development agenda. (The Malawi Diaspora Engagement Policy) and plans on how the Ministry plans to operationalize the Malawi Diaspora Engagement Policy among the many issue

MCPDN has recently facilitated a number of diaspora engagements with Cabinet Ministers and so far Hon Richard Chimwendo Banda, Timothy Mtambo, Sosten Gwengwe and Sam Dalitso Kawale have been hosted by the Network
