JTI Leaf Malawi up with ‘Mlimi Wozitsata Ayiphule’ promotion to reward its tobacco growers

As a way of rewarding its tobacco growers who, year in year out, deliver contracted volumes of tobacco, Japan Tobacco International (JTI) Leaf Malawi has launched a promotion called ‘Mlimi Wozitsata Ayiphule’.

Speaking on Friday during the promotion launch in Lilongwe, JTI Leaf Malawi Corporate Affairs Director, Limbani Kakhome, said the promotion will run from the day tobacco markets open until its closure in October.

Kakhombe said all JTI-contracted growers are eligible and stand a chance to win various prizes, including diesel-powered maize mill and huller, three motorcycles fully registered, bags of NPK and Urea fertilizer among others.

He said the promotion has been introduced as an incentive for growers who deliver their contracted volumes on time and within expected quality agreements.

Said Kakhombe :”This year, we have gone bigger, better and bolder by introducing grand national prizes to be wonby our contracted growers who fulfil set criteria.”

He however, bemoaned heightened levels of illegal vending of the leaf this year.

Kendal Kamwendo returns on stage with another movie’ School Days

After directing and producing the famous love movie titled ‘Where My Heart Belongs’ in 2015, one of the country’s renowned musicians-cum-comedian Kendall Kamwendo has come back with a new.

Titled ‘School Days’, the new movie is going to be premiered on May 5,2023 at Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe.

In an interview with this publication,Kamwendo highlighted that the movie is aimed at discouraging some behaviours such as teasing, vandalism and bullying that occur at schools especially in the secondary schools.

”This is a film that wants to remind people of their school time and, at the same time, we want to advocate love among students, especially those in secondary school, that they should refrain from teasing and bullying,” said Kamwendo.


He added :“Filmmakers have produced quality movies and, with proper support and political will, the film industry can help boost the country’s economy.”

Kamwendo disclosed that they invested K8 million in the production of the movie with the largest chunk of the sponsorship coming from Beacon Printers Limited.

He then bemoaned lack of support from well-wishers and the corporate world, noting that most Malawian films fail to register breakthroughs due to inadequate support.

Co-scripted by Vincent Nyale, some characters in the movie include Kendall himself, Rudo Mkukupa Chakwera, Blessed Chimombo, Tumpe Mtaya, Yvonne Chanache and Amos Filisa.

Tomato seller wins K100,000 in TNM Mpamba kashi-kashi promotion

Given Malunga, a tomato seller from Nkhoma in Lilongwe has emerged the first winner of K100,000 in the TNM Mpamba Kashi-Kashi promotion, which was launched on March 09, 2023.

When notified about the win through a phone call, Malunga,28,sounded quite excited and said the money will help boost her business.

Speaking during the draw,TNM Mpamba Marketing Manager Tione Kafumbu said they launched the promotion as one way of rewarding customers and agents for the milestones Mpamba has achieved over the years.



During the first draw, TNM has given out cash prizes amounting to K8.4million to 196 customers.

The Mpamba Kashi-Kashi promotion, which runs for three months, is set to reward 1,344 customers and 840 agents across the country.

It is available 24/7 and can be accessed on Mpamba USSD code *444# without having to visit any physical TNM branch shops.

Ngwira to construct 10 standard houses for Cyclone Freddy survivors

As stakeholders and individuals continue helping people affected by Cyclone Freddy, the country’s renowned innovator and entrepreneur Kondwani Kachamba Ngwira has given himself a challenge to construct about 5 to 10 standard houses in ten days for cyclone Freddy survivors.

In an interview with 247 Malawi, Ngwira, who is also advocating for Sustainable Disaster Management said he is targeting displaced victims from Zomba, Chiradzulu and Thyolo.

“Yes we will construct a number of these houses for our brothers and sisters Displaced with cyclone in the south .

“We will also consider Mzimba side , some residence are residing in risky areas 2 Days ago they experienced madzi from kuphiri more similar to what happened in the south hence we should not wait for disaster the best is to incorporate them in the programme to prevent future tears.

“Pray that God will give us the grace to finance so that we push more and more . Pray that God will connect us to people and orgs that will partner with us and change our Malawi,” he said

Ngwira disclosed that an allocation of 5 billion Kwacha from the disaster donation, the country would manage to construct about 1400 houses in six months.

He said he has already done with construction of one standard house that has built in 8 days only and taken a total direct cost of 1.7 Million.

Said Kachamba :”Tomorrow I will provide all designs , costs in specific so that those willing can copy and start constructing either for business , their constituencies e.t.c

Recently, the department of disaster management announced that there are over 140,000 displaced households in the southern Malawi because of cyclone Freddy, most of whom are residing in about 700 camps erected across the affected 13 districts.

Ekwendeni Hammers unveil three players from Bullets

Northen Region side Ekwendeni Hammers have unveiled three players who have joined the club on a one-year deal from FCB Nyasa Big Bullets.

The three are Mphatso Magaleta, Kesten White and Felix Demakude. The players have already started practicing with the Mzimba-based side.

Like any other super league team,Ekwendeni Hammers has been busy preparing for the forthcoming TNM Super League season.

In friendly matches played over the last weekend Hammers hammered Chimaliwa FC and relegated TN Stars 3-2 and 4-0 respectively.
