Bakili meets Bushiri: Appreciates him on Cyclone Freddy impacts response

Former president Bakili Muluzi, on Tuesday met with Prophet shepherd Bushiri.

Writing on his Facebook page, Bushiri said the former president had called him to appreciate the work the prophet and his team are doing in assisting those affected by cyclone Freddy.

“As Malawi’s Ambassador of Goodwill, he invited me and my team to appreciate and encourage us on the work we have been doing, to complement government’s efforts in responding to effects of tropical cyclone Freddy, which has killed and displaced thousands in the country,”

“Thank you for the words of encouragement on the little work we are doing. We give God all the glory.

” I must also underline that I have been immensely encouraged to do more, and I agree with the words of our president, His Excellency Dr Lazarus Chakwera, who keeps reminding all of us of this, ‘let us hold hands together and do more to help,”reads part of the post.

Meanwhile, prophet Bushiri has made an appeal to other religious leaders to stand up and support the victims, regardless of affiliations.

Prophet Bushiri is one of the people in the country that are complementing government’s efforts in assisting those that have been affected by cyclone Freddy.

Records by the Department of Disaster Management Affairs- show that about 140,000 households have been rendered homeless by the cyclone.

Govt challenged to be more transparent on refugees relocation

A grouping under the banner Concerned Malawi Citizens has challenged government to be transparent when relocating all refuges and asylum seekers to Dzaleka Refugee Camp.

Speaking during a press briefing on Monday, Chairperson for the grouping, Wells Khama uploaded Government efforts saying this may be a positive move towards protecting indigenous businessmen as most of the refugees have occupied businesses meant for Malawians.

Khama further asked government to disclose information about the amount of funds allocated to the exercise.

He said they expect government to fully implement the exercise and to ensure that the set timeline is met.

Last week, Government through the ministry of Home Land and Security announced that it intends to relocate refugees from April 15 -27, 2023.

Chakwera donates K120 million towards Cyclone Freddy Survivors

Through his “Tigwirane Manja” campaign launched last month, President Lazarus Chakwera has today donated K120 million and 20 bales of blankets to the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DODMA) to help those who were adversely affected by Cyclone Freddy in the southern region.

‘Tigwirane Manja’ is a nationwide humanitarian mechanism fashioned to bring relief to those adversely affected by Cyclone Freddy.

Speaking at Kamuzu Palace during the handover ceremony, President Chakwera called on people and organizations to continue helping the communities affected by Cyclone Freddy.



“What Freddy has done is nothing short of devastation. It will take years to reconstruct what has been damaged. Any recovery or reconstruction will require that we all work together to move toward a future that is more prepared for the climate shocks we will undoubtedly face going forward,” he said.

He said the part of money he has donated comes from his Presidential Charity Initiative Committee which was realized during the Presidential Golf Tournament fundraiser that was held on October 8, 2022 and raised K280 million Kwacha.

On her part, representative of one of the companies that participated in Presidential Golf Tournament, Maureen Kachingwe, Head of Legal and Company Secretary for Illovo said their company will continue to work hand in hand with government and the President to help in emergencies like these, as well as in other occurences that need help.

“We will continue to work with the government and other officials until all the victims of Cyclone Freddy are fully rehabilitated and have moved on with their lives. We give you assurance that we will hold hands with you in this and more endeavors,” said Kachingwe.

Kachingwe thanked the President for ensuring that companies are given a conducive environment in which they work, through which they are able to contribute effectively to the community.

Vizenge Kumwenda, the Presidential Charity Initiative Committee Chairperson also thanked the President for giving this gift and said that what the Malawi leader has done shows good leadership.

“Your action serves as a reminder that leadership is about serving others,” he said.

DODMA Commissioner Charles Kalemba, who received the money and blankets on behalf of his organization, said the funds will go a long way to alleviate the suffering of the affected families.

Currently, there are more than 750 camps across the Southern Region where more than 143,000 households are being kept after their houses, crops, and businesses were destroyed by floods.

DPP North Endorses Peter Mutharika as Candidate for 2025 elections

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in the north, yesterday, anonymously endorsed Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika as candidate for the 2025 General elections. This took place at a function organised by the Northern Regional Committee in Mzuzu city.

Speaking at the function, Vice President for the North, Hon Goodall Gondwe alluded that the Party and the people of north still need Professor Arthur Peter Muthalika to finish his developments in the region and Malawi as a whole.

Mutharika bouncing back in 2025?



Concurring with Gondwe, Regional Governor Hon Mzomera Ngwira asked the opinion of DPP members if they are also supporting the views to which they anonymously did. There was singing, dancing and ululation as all the members were overwhelmed with exhilaration about APM comeback. This is a clear indication that people of the north still want President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika.

Asking what would be the next step, The DPP Vice President for the North said the message will be relayed to prof Arthur Peter Muthalika for him to consider.

Calls for President Mutharika comeback have resurfaced mainly due to the poor economic status of the country by the Tonse Government. It is undenied fact that people still regard APM as the only redeemer at this point as the country is daily sinking into economic affliction.

CFT Movement clocks 3 – scales down anniversary celebration as Country focuses on Cyclone Freddy after-effects

The Citizen for Transformation Movement (CFT), the vibrant movement that was launched by activist cum Politician Timothy Pagonachi Mtambo  on 1st April 2020 has clocked three years .

In a public statement made available to 247Malawi News  and signed by the Movements Publicity Secretary Chimwemwe Maunde , the movement  wished to heart-warmingly  acknowledge all noble  citizens on Malawi  for supporting the revolution through a classic 2020-2023 embrace for a better  and well governed Malawi.   CFT had initially planned big anniversary celebration however these had to be postponed to a later date to make sure that that country is all focused on helping  the victims of the cyclone Freddy disaster.

“In respect to the movement core solidarity virtue, the anniversary celebrations are postponed to a later date. We wholeheartedly join the entire nation and the globe cheering Cyclone Freddy victims” said Maunde in the statement.

Timothy Mtambo, largely known as the face against the impunity of the previous regime led the revolution alongside his colleagues from the civil rights society. On 1st April 2020 he announced the formation of a political movement in what many thought was just an April fools day joke. Mtambo, known for his brevity and lack of fear declared at the time that “Each one of us as Malawians must demand that stealing, corruption, tribalism, nepotism must stop. We need to demand change now not a day after tomorrow but now”.  He went on to declare that “I will not tell you that I will transform you, but we will be a platform for transformation. I believe there’s no greater calling than public calling. Time to wear our revolutionary boots, step out & demand what we need”

The movement played a vital role in ushering in the new regime  and has seen itself doing several charity works  in helping the needy.
