Chimwendo assures expedition process of M1 rehabilitation project

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Director of Youth, Richard Chimwendo Banda has assured people of Dowa that Government intends to fast track rehabilitation of M1 Road.

Chimwendo was speaking in Mponela Dowa during the Development rally which Member of Parliament of area Darlington Harawa hosted.

Chimwendo said he will be meeting Minister of Transport to find ways how this project can be expedited.

Chimwendo said for long time Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) regime neglected rehabilitation of this road project.

Chimwendo admitted that the project is indeed going at snail’s pace.

Speaking earlier Harawa, urged Government to speed up the project saying the road from Lilongwe has become a death trap.

Harawa said people are losing lives because of the road.

On 22 July, 2022, after many years of cries and demands to have the overused M1 road rehabilitated, Chakwera
launched the 301km European Union (EU) funded project at Mtiti in Dowa.

The 140 billion kwacha project covers from Kamuzu International Airport turnoff in Lilongwe to Chiweta in Rumphi with four sections of the road constructed by different contractors.

M1 road is a backbone of the entire Malawi road infrastructure and the economy. It connects us to our shared development, it connects beauty of our shared environment and it connects us to the power of shared culture and to the prosperity of shared markets.

Zikhale assured total security of people with albinism

Minister of Homeland Security Kenneth Zikhale Ng’oma has assured people with albinism of their security,saying security has been tightened in the country.

Ng’oma who is also MCP National Director of Strategic Planning made the assurance on Saturday during a political rally which he conducted at Chigumulire school ground in Nsanje district.

Ng’oma said for a long time people with albinism have been facing killings and abductions in the country, hence making them live in fear and fail to support themselves.

Zikhale said anyone found killing and abducting people with albinism will face law.

During the rally, Zikhale also supported some people with albinism financially.

Nankhumwa accuses some opposition party leaders of living undemocratic lifestyle

Leader of opposition in parliament Kondwani Nankhumwa says most opposition party leaders in the country live in an undemocratic style that consequently undermines the will of their members.

Nankhumwa who was on a week-long tour in Uganda made the remarks when he met the country’s National Unity Platform(NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu popularly known as Bobi Wine.

According to Nankhumwa, it is now high time that opposition leaders start adding value to the survival of democracy in their respective jurisdiction.

“Opposition parties have to reaffirm their commitment in regarding democracy as a bedrock and fundamental asset to socio economic development of the countries,” argued Nankhumwa.

In his speech, Kyagulanyi echoed with Nankhumwa arguing that democracy in different socities will only survive if it start being practiced by opposition parties.

Malawi has a multi-party system with over 40 registered political parties.

The political process in Malawi is such that parties are voted into power through elections.

The parties with the most representation in the National Assembly are the People’s Party (PP), Malawi Congress Party (MCP), United Democratic Front (UDF), and Democratic Progressive Party (DPP)

Malawi Electoral Commission adopts 50+ 1 as electoral law

Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Commissioner Francis Kasaila Friday disclosed that several changes have taken place in the electoral laws with one being the adoption of the 50+1.

Speaking during a meeting organized by MEC to reveal the amendments in the electoral laws, and confirm the list of polling and registration centers after the constituency demarcation process, Kasaila said no presidential candidate would be declared winner without surpassing 50 percent of the total votes.

Kasaila said that, “50+1 was an interpretation by the courts, if you remember well after the referral case on the 2019 elections, the court ruled that majority in our constitution means absolute majority which is 50 percent plus 1.

“By the time, we were going for the re-run elections in 2020, amendments had not yet been done, but as of now, it has been effected and we now have a law that clearly stipulates that the presidential candidate will only be declared winner if he or she has managed to get over 50 percent of the total votes.”

He added: “Where no candidate did not satisfy this law, the commission shall conduct a re-run in 60 days where only number one and two shall contest, no alliances will be allowed, but it will be at the discretion of the contestants to woo support from other parties who will not be contesting.”

Apart from the 50+1 law, MEC has changed the voting month, from May to September, and the voting day will be a holiday and voting time will be from 6 am to 4 pm.

“Come 2025, no one without the National Identity Card will be allowed to register as a voter or even with just the receipt from the National Registration Bureau (NRB) you will not be allowed to register as a voter, we want only those with real cards” he said.

Zikhale woo people in Nsanje to Vote for Chakwera

Director of strategic planning Kenneth Zikhale Ng’oma continues with his mission to unite the country for president Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera as today he stormed Nsanje.

Zikhale who held a rally today at Chigumulire school ground in Nsanje central constituency, urged the gathering to rally behind Chakwera’s government for the continued development.

Zikhale said Chakwera is the only leader who is responsible, stable and can develop the country,hence urging people to vote for Chakwera in the 2025 general elections.



Zikhale pointed out some notable development projects happening in the district which among others include; the re-construction of Railway line, Mtukula pa khomo as well as doubling Honoria for the chiefs.

According to Zikhale, president Chakwera is fine tuning the country for the improvement of the economy.

The strategist has since expressed optimism that Chakwera will win 2025 general elections with 71%.

“Things are changing for the better which brings confidence that Chakwera will win the elections with 71%.

Chakwera is fine tuning the country’s economy and people will see the fruits just soon,” explains Zikhale.

On his part, Member of parliament for the area Kafu Mandevana thanked president Chakwera for the support during the tropical cyclone Freddy that hit the area.

Mandevana further said that the area has improved under the leadership of Dr Lazarus Chakwera, saying re-construction of the railway will benefit many people in his area.

Some notable people who attended the rally include; Minister of Water Abida Mia, Advisor to the Nkalangiza, Member of parliament for Chikwawa South Elias Abdul Karim, Regional Chairman for South Peter Simbi, Deputy publicity Secretary in the Malawi Congress party Kondi Msungama, Umodzi party president John Chisi and Senior Chief Tengani together with his subjects.
